Kwon Sang-woo Becomes Entrepreneur

Actor Kwon Sang-woo held an opening ceremony in Myeongdong, central Seoul, Friday for the first outlet of his cosmetics brand ``TEARS.'' The opening of the shop came after Kwon recently established the cosmetics firm Natural Tears, which is completely owned by the hallyu star. Kwon is the CEO. Kwon also became an inaugural advertising model for the brand. TEARS was named after his nickname ``Mr. Tears,'' which was given to him by his fans in Japan and other Asian nations in recognition of his tear-jerking acting in the SBS-TV drama ``Stairway to Heaven.'' He starred alongside actress Choi Ji-woo. ``I hold a 100 percent stake in this business and started it along with my friends,'' he said. ``Many people seem skeptical about me doing business. But I'm doing my utmost to prepare for this.'' Kwon said he would expand his into overseas markets. ``Like actors, it's reckless to do business overseas before you are acknowledged at home first,'' he said. Kwon plans to open outlets in Daegu and Busan this month before further expanding shops across the nation next year.

Kim Hyun-jung to Get 3 Awards at Gala in HK

K-pop idol Kim Hyun-jung of boy-band SS501 will receive three prizes at the"Yahoo! Asia Buzz Awards 2009," a gala event which will be held in Hong Kong on Dec. 14, his aides said. The annual awards ceremony, jointly organized by Yahoo portal operators in Korea, Hong Kong and Taipei, has honored stars chosen by netizens since 2003. The awards reserved for him are ―"Buzz International Single,'' "KR Top Buzz Artist" and "Taiwan Top Buzz Korean Artist." The Buzz International Single award is given to an entertainer who claims the top spot in the list of most searched entertainers by Internet users on Yahoo sites in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea. The award signifies that Kim is the top hallyu star in Asia. Kim gained international fame after starring in the KBS smash hit ``Boys over Flowers'' as a handsome tycoon heir earlier this year. His band SS501 will also receive the"Buzz International Group" award. The band will have a concert in Hong Kong on Dec. 12 before attending the awards ceremony. chojh@koreatimes.co.kr

Indictment Against Kang In Suspended

Prosecutors have suspended the indictment against K-pop boy band Super Junior's Kang In, the prosecution said Friday. He had been booked on assault charges. He wasn't physical detained on charges of beating up a patron in a bar brawl in Gangnam, southern Seoul in September. The police recently asked the prosecution to indict him but prosecutors have decided to put the indictment on hold. The prosecution said the suspension reflected that he has had no criminal record and the degree of his involvement in the brawl has been viewed as minimal. On Sept. 16, Kang and his friend fought with two customers at a bar in Gangnam. A surveillance camera showed three more of Kang's friends joined in the fight later. Kang at first tried to avoid getting involved in the fight but later joined in, police said after viewing the recording. Kang was in trouble again when fled the scene of a car crash after causing a traffic accident under the influence of alcohol on Oct. 16. Yoo Seung-jun’s Big Screen Debut Planned in February in China

A movie in which former top Korean singer and dancer Yoo Seung-jun is set to make his big screen debut will barrel into theaters in China in February, according to the official homepage of the film Friday. Yoo plays a supporting role as a prince fighting battles in the action film, ``Junior Soldiers,'' which is directed by Hong Kong movie star Jackie Chan. The 33-year-old Yoo has been banned from entering Korea after he obtained American citizenship in an apparent bid to evade mandatory military service shortly before his term was schedule to commence in 2002. Yoo has been pursuing his singing and acting career in China for about three years. Yoo, recruited by Chan last year, will play opposite world famous action star and Taiwanese-American actor Lee-hom Wang. Chan will play a soldier, while Wang and Yoo will play princes of warring states. Yoo's character will be the antagonist of the story. Wonder Girls to Appear in American Hit Reality Show

By Han Sang-hee Staff Reporter The Wonder Girls will appear on the hit reality show ``So You Think You Can Dance'' Dec. 9 as guests, according to the girl group's agency JYP Entertainment. The five-member band, which became the first Korean singers to enter the Billboard Hot 100 in October, will sing their hit number ``Nobody,'' along with Kris Allen, the season eight American Idol winner. Allen will perform his newest single ``Live Like We're Dying.'' ``We believe that the opportunity was scheduled because the girls made it on the Billboard charts and also because of their appearance as the opening act of the Jonas Brothers. We hope the girls will be appearing in other famous shows as well,'' the band's agency said. Singer Park Jin-young’s Comeback Wows Fans

Park Jin-young, president of JYP Entertainment, made his comeback as a singer at the 30th Blue Dragon Awards ceremony on Wednesday night, wowing the audience and TV viewers with a charismatic and provocative performance. At the star-studded awards gala, which was also broadcast live on television, Park performed "No Love No More," a track off his mini-album, "Sad Freedom." I am thankful, though, as I have to try twice as hard because of my less-than-perfect acting abilities,'' said Kim, who had previously made headlines for shedding 20 kilograms to play a terminally ill patient. Ex-Financial Chief to Lead National Pension

Jun Kwang-woo, former head of the Financial Services Commission, was appointed the president and CEO of the National Pension Service, Wednesday. Jun said he will lead the 270-trillion-won fund in a sustainable and sound expansion in an age of low birthrates. "My main goal is to make the public corporation the best social security service organization and globalize the fund's management to strengthen our competitiveness," he said. Authorities said Jun is the best fit for the position as he has considerable experience in international financial fields ― he worked for the International Bank of Reconstruction and Development for 15 years and then served as chairman of Deloitte Korea. Professor Namd to Head Truth Commission

Professor Lee Young-jo of Kyung Hee University has been appointed president of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the organization said Wednesday. The new head of the independent investigative commission has vowed to expose the truth surrounding the painful past of the country. The commission was established in 2005 to investigate terrorism, human rights infringements, violence and other significant wrongdoings that occurred during Japanese colonial rule, the Korean War and authoritarian regimes. The committee can issue recommendations to organizations or authorities that infringed on human rights to make amendments or apologies. The commission has made rulings on 6,683 out of the 11,021 cases that have been reported to it as of Wednesday. Lee has served as a commissioner for the organization since 2005. Stars Warming Up Winter With Charities

By Han Sang-hee Staff Reporter While Hollywood's Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are busy saving the world through charity donations, Korea's famous stars are also opening their wallets and doling out their talents to help the needy. Actor Cha In-pyo and his wife, actress Shin Ae-ra, have been supporting underprivileged children around the world for the past several years though Compassion International, a child support orgainzation. They have even formed a musical group, the ``Compassion Band,'' comprised of more than 120 members. With the help of fellow stars including singer Hwang Bo, celebrity couple Jung Hye-young and Sean, and singer DJ Koo, the two recently released an album titled ``Love Bridge.'' ``We made this album with hopes that more people will learn and join us at Compassion. We hope people will enjoy the album and further hold hands with children (who need their help),'' Cha said during the showcase for the album last month. All proceeds will be donated to underprivileged children. Another event filled with love will be held at KBS Hall, Dec. 5. T
