Professor Lee Young-jo of Kyung Hee University has been appointed president of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the organization said Wednesday.
The new head of the independent investigative commission has vowed to expose the truth surrounding the painful past of the country.
The commission was established in 2005 to investigate terrorism, human rights infringements, violence and other significant wrongdoings that occurred during Japanese colonial rule, the Korean War and authoritarian regimes. The committee can issue recommendations to organizations or authorities that infringed on human rights to make amendments or apologies.
The commission has made rulings on 6,683 out of the 11,021 cases that have been reported to it as of Wednesday.
Lee has served as a commissioner for the organization since 2005. His two-year term began Tuesday.
