Suzy to throw pitch at Ryu's home game

SuzySuzy of girl group Miss A will throw the ceremonial first pitch at major leaguer Ryu Hyun-jin’s home game next month. According to Suzy’s agency, JYP Entertainment, Suzy was invited to throw the first pitch at the Los Angeles Dodgers Stadium where Ryu and his team will face the Cincinnati Reds on May 27. Korean pitcher Ryu is currently a sophomore starter for the Dodgers. The two have already crossed paths on a variety show aired on SBS titled “Running Man.” Ryu made a great start in his season opener last month, throwing five scoreless innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Dodgers then suffered a 1-3 loss against the San Diego Padres Monday but nevertheless Ryu’s performance remained dominant and in control.

Korean named president of Japanese university

Kang Sang-jungKang Sang-jung, an ethnic Korean professor residing in Japan, was inaugurated president of Seigakuin University in Saitama Prefecture at the school’s chapel, Tuesday. He is the first Korean national to be appointed president of a four-year Japanese university.“When I entered this school 40 years ago, I was nervous and hesitant mainly because I had no friends,” Kang said at the ceremony. “I hope every student at this school will manage to find friends who will help shape you for four years.” Kang, a second-generation Korean-Japanese political scientist, was born in Kumamoto and later became the first Korean to be appointed a full-time professor at the University of Tokyo. He studied at Waseda University and was involved in the protest movement against the compulsory fingerprinting of foreigners in the early 1980s. His major works include “Beyond Orientalism” (1996), “The Perspective of Globalization” (2001) and “Nationalism” (2001).

Lee joins Vatican council for culture

Linus Lee Seong-hyoBy Baek Byung-yeulPope Francis has appointed Linus Lee Seong-hyo, auxiliary bishop of Suwon, as a member of the Pontifical Council for Culture, according to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea (CBCK) on Monday. The Vatican department, established by the late John Paul II in 1982, is involved in a variety of activities aimed at strengthening the Catholic Church’s relationship with different cultures. It has been putting in efforts to interact with contemporary artists, participating in the 2011 Venice Biennale with its Holy See pavilion.Lee, 56, was among 14 new members Pope Francis named to the council on March 29. Kim Eui-joon to lead Lotte Hall

Kim Eui-joonKim Eui-joon, general director of the Korea National Ballet (KNO), was named president of Lotte Hall, a classical music hall under construction in Jamsil, southern Seoul, Monday. Kim handed in his notice as general director earlier this year, but his resignation was not accepted until Monday because the KNO was without a chief. He will take office as president of Lotte Hall on May 1. Kim began his career in music at the Seoul Arts Center in 1984. He also served as president of the LG Arts Center for 15 years and took the helm of the KNO in August 2011.

Kim Do-whanKim Do-whan, a professor of operations management at the Sejong University School of Business, was inaugurated president of the Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI), Monday. He will serve a three-year term. “One of our country’s major government projects is to promote a creative economy, and ICT (information and communications technology) is an essential part of the digital economy’s growth mechanism,” Kim said at his inauguration ceremony. “I will work to extend the scope of the KISDI’s policy research and to strengthen its policy support to contribute to such government projects,” he added.Kim studied business administration at Sungkyunkwan University and received his master’s degree in the same field from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in 1984. He earned his doctorate from Northwestern University in 1993.

He joined Deloitte Anjin in 1986, building expertise in the audit, business consulting and merger and acquisition sectors, respectively.He also worked as a non-government member of the consultative body of the Financial Services Commission’s accounting policy between 2010 and 2012.Ham graduated from Korea University in 1982.
