Sweat Odor 90% Curable

By Bae Ji-sook Staff Reporter Everyone knows that sweat is important for health ― it keeps one's body temperature at a regular level, and prevents skin from drying, amongst other things. However, not everything is good. No one likes sweating in summer. In Korea, smelling of sweat is everybody's nightmare. TV commercials for deodorants emphasize how the smell can easily drive people off. Dr. Kim Jin-young of Arumdaunnara Clinic is one of the pioneers in treating hyperhidrosis and bromidrosis. Bromidrosis, or body odor, is related to eccrine and apocrine sweat glands. The apocrine gland lets out fatty acids. When sweat is split into fatty acid and ammonium, it produces a strong smell. Women are more likely to suffer from it, but he says it may refer to the fact that women are more sensitive to their smell. He says those who have more sweat glands in particular parts of the body tend to smell more. It is the same with hyperdrosis. Those who sweat more when nervous should check up their nervous system. ``Those with more sensitive sympathetic dispositions are mo

(5) Five Elements of Nature (1)

By Janet Shin This is an example of a saju reading. Please see how this person's life can be read based on the yin yang that we learned from last week's essay. These are the four pillars of a woman born on March 2, 1966 at 4:50 a.m. As you can see, all four pillars, from her birth year, month, day and time, are yang. Remember what we learned last week about the properties of yin and yang. This woman is in the trading business, so she travels a lot. She has strong self-assertion, makes quick decisions and tries to achieve whatever she plans. She pursues a splendid life. However, her marriage life is not harmoneous as she confronts her husband. She is also impatient. Yin and yang is broken down into five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal and water). It is a classification of our nature. They exist, act or react, and circulate within the yin yang boundary. Although it is usually translated as ``element," the Chinese character xing literally means something like ``changing states of being," ``permutations" or ``metamorphoses of being." In fact Sinologists cannot ag

Lesson 156: The Advanced Haengma 2

By Nam Chi-hyung You may feel somewhat nervous about learning haengmas if you think you have to memorize them. However, you don't need to memorize all of them one by one. Like when learning joseki, learning about haengma will help you develop the sense to recognize the correct position of stones. In addition, perhaps you've already experienced many haengmas when you went through the difficult process of memorizing josekis. Let's see how many you can recall. Diagram 1 The sequence from 1 to 6 is taken from a two-space high pincer joseki. When Black covers the white stone in the corner with a knight's move at 3, White pushes up with 4 and cuts with 6. The question is Black's next move. Diagram 2 Because the two △-marked stones are bigger than the x-marked one, it's reasonable to do something on the lower side. However, to give an atari with 1 and push with 3 is an immature play. It doesn't become a threat to the o-marked white stone, but just helps White to develop the left side. To play A instead of pushing with 3, letting White to extend with B, isn't any good af

Spinal Surgery Without Scar Possible

By Bae Ji-sook Staff Reporter No one really understands the importance of the spine until they really injure it ― in some cases not being able to walk, stand up, or in the worst case move at all. Lee Sang-ho of Wooridul Spine Hospital offers a magic answer for surgery, which is both less painful and more effective. The hospital specializes in the treatment of spine and backache involving the treatment of the discs. Discs lie between adjacent vertebrae in the spine and are formed of jellylike joints and fibers to allow movement of the vertebrae. They work as a ligament to hold the vertebrae together. Problems arise when the discs get twisted, fall apart or malfunction in some other way. Lee says Koreans and other Asians, whose culture involves sitting on the ground, tend to have more spinal problems. If one has difficulty bending the torso or sitting on a chair, feels rather comfortable when lying down only, cannot raise one's legs vertically straight while laying down, cannot lift heavy items or has grave back pain after strenuous activity, he or she should consul

Doctors Back Vaccine for Cervical Cancer

By Bae Ji-sook Staff Reporter Local doctors challenged allegations over side effects of a vaccine against cervical cancer which could save up to tens of thousands of women. Some foreign media as well as Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) reported ``serious side effects'' including death, joint and muscle pain, fatigue, physical weakness and general malaise. The Korean Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (KSOG) spoke out that the allegations are exaggerated. Earlier this month, major media such as CNN, MBC and others said that Gardasil, the American FDA approved human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine, has such side effects. It alerted many people over the vaccine costing around 600,000 won here. The KFDA also said about 40 cases involving the side effects have been reported since its commercialization in February. However, the KSOG refuted Friday that efficacy of the vaccine outshines its side effects. ``Only less than 5 percent of those injected said they felt itchiness, soreness or dizziness, compared with some 20 percent for other vaccines,'' Dr. Nam Joo-hyun of

(4) What Is Yin Yang? (2)

By Janet Shin A person who knows ``saju" has different perspectives about the events happening around us. Saju lets us read the moment and convert it to something substantial. Yin yang theory is primarily used to describe the opposing, interdependent waxing and waning, and transformational nature of all things in the cosmos. The five-element theory is primarily used to explain characteristics, classifications, and the law of mutual nourishment and mutual restraint. They are used in conjunction with one another, in the practical applications of yin and yang and the five elements. The ancient people viewed their bodies, lives, family, countries, world and the universe based on the yin yang and five elements theory.. I classify three subjects originating from yin yang and five elements theory. First, fengshui is the study of geography and space. The second subject is oriental medicine. Human physiology, the causes and development of diseases are within the yin yang and five element theories. In traditional Chinese medicine, yin yang also refers to the various an

Lesson 155: The Advanced Haengma 1

By Nam Chi-hyung ``Haengma'' is perhaps the only Korean Baduk term which is widely accepted by the English-speaking Baduk players. It is often mistakenly compared to the Japanese concept ``tesuji,'' which means a brilliant move in a certain shape. When you are talking about a specific move fit for a certain situation, there is another Korean Baduk term ``maek,'' which has almost the same meaning as the Japanese tesuji. In contrast, the moves referred to as haengma are more general. The basic haengma is well explained in proverbs such as ``when being attached, bend,'' ``cut across a knight's move,'' etc. Since we've learned many of those basics already, let's study some that are a bit more sophisticated. Diagram 1 White 4 is an example of the haengma described by the proverb, ``add a stone and sacrifice both'' when you have stones in atari on the 3rd line. The question at hand is Black's correct answer to White 4. This kind of haengma is not taught by proverbs, but still deserves to be learned. Diagram 2 If Black simply blocks with 1, it allows White to seal up

(3) What Is Yin Yang? (1)

By Janet Shin The study of saju (four pillars) does require we use our imagination. But in order to study saju correctly, we must become familiar with basic terminologies and their logic. Saju has been translated differently by the different schools but the fundamental concept is to know ourselves and the universe, so it shouldn't be misunderstood and has never been and will never be disposed. It would rather be regarded important. There isn't just way of looking at things. This is not just a theory. It is a logical prediction for one's fate and future. But we also have to understand that this is something that can't be interpreted via a scientific approach only. Although saju is neither mysterious superstition nor taboo, it will give us surprising clues to understanding ourselves and our surroundings which cannot be explained by existing scientific methods. It will be great if you were able to use this for your reality and apply them to your daily life and if there were any mistake we dare to correct to find the answer why. For this reason, we must watch ourselves n

Botox: Boon or Poison?

By Bae Ji-sook Staff Reporter Whenever you look at actresses on the red carpet ― these days many actors, too ― you find their foreheads and eyes showing little sign of aging; they all have radiant and wrinkleless skin. Because of the use of botulinum toxin, commonly known by the brand name Botox, people look younger than ever. Originally authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to tackle strabismus and spasmodic eye movements by interfering with the operation of neurotransmitters, the neurotoxin protein is now known to be effective for several other uses ― easing muscle pain, hyperhidrosis and treating injuries from strokes, cerebral palsy. Allergan Korea, the manufacturer of Botox in Korea, declined to reveal its exact sales but said that revenue is growing dramatically every year. By injecting the toxin subcutaneously ― taking about 5 to 10 minutes ― one can turn back the years, they say. Still, the use of Botox is controversial ― some point out that its toxicity is seriously bad for people's health. The fact that it is a neurotoxin that can be obtained f

(2) Key Words for Studying Saju – 4 pillars

By Janet Shin Before I start the main topic, I would like to introduce some key words in studying the four pillars. I have categorized them by each group. Please read and familiarize yourself with these words. We will start with some Chinese characters. Chinese characters are semantic letters that have gradually accumulated the information of meanings over several millennia. The shapes of Chinese characters and their semantic translation influenced part of the four pillars interpretation. In order to understand the four pillars, we will use 22 Chinese characters, shown below with an English pronunciation guide. Although there have been concerns about learning four pillars with Chinese characters, do not to worry about it because only 22 Chinese characters will be enough to learn four pillars. Below is a quick and short summary of the key words. Going forward, you will be able to look inside yourself and find who you are and who are people around you. Visit and get your own saju at my Web site, http://blog.naver.com/janet_shin. 1. Ten Celestial Stems ; Inta
