(8) Ten Celestial Stems ― Gap and Eul

By Janet Shin From now on, we will concentrate on the ten celestial stems from gap to gye individually. I will list them by wood (gap and eul), fire (byeong and jeong), earth (mu and gi), metal (gyeong and sin) and water (im and gye) in order. You will be given some pictures of nature to illustrate what represents each stem. The stems are categorized into seasons, directions, planets, colors, characteristics and the five viscera (of heart, liver, spleen, lungs and kidneys) and six entrails (of gall bladder, stomach, small and large intestines, belly, bladder and bowels). This won't be a perfect classification, so don't let skepticism get the better of you. But this gives some insight into the ten celestial stems. Instead of applying the individual categories automatically, you need to see the bigger picture and how it determines someone's destiny, after seeing the physical and chemical responses in each other. At least, visualize what natural beings represent you and what other natural environments surround yourself. Wood likes the water and the earth. Wood on dr

Do I Have Disc?

By Lee June-ho Contributing Writer Back pain is one of the common illnesses such as flu or headache that many suffer from daily, and approximately two out of three adults are reported to have taken time off work or visited a hospital with a back complaint. For the middle-aged, after a thorough physical and neurological examination by the physicians and some x-rays on their first visit, they are frequently referred to have some ``narrowed disc space''. They also recommended to take an MRI exam for the possibility of having 'degenerative disc disease'. This terminology of ``degenerative disc disease'' is a kind of misnomer that the general population often incorrectly refers to as 'back pain'. The true 'degenerative disc disease' is a medical term that refers the 'herniated intervertebral disc disease'. Discs in the spine dehydrate, or dry out, and lose their ability to act as shock absorbers between the vertebrae. There is minimal blood supply to the discs so they lack the ability to heal or repair themselves. So the true ``degenerative disc disease'' that requires surgic

Doctor Campaigns to Make Dementia Beautiful

Bae Ji-sook Staff Reporter When it comes to the term ``dementia,'' some people may think of a beautiful woman in a white linen bed trying to squeeze out memories as in the movies ``Note Book'' or ``The Moment to Remember.'' Some others may think of the Korean phrase ``stick dung on the wall out of insanity.'' Both sides say dementia is a serious disorder. However, Dr. Na Duk-lyul of Samsung Medical Center says everyone has dementia in a way. ``In this big universe, we may all have different kinds of dementia. The difference is that these people just stand out,'' he says smiling that the definition of true dementia could be very personal. According to The Korean Association for Dementia, those with more than three to four symptoms below should visit their doctors for consultation. Caregivers or spouses should answer the questionnaires, as the patient might want to lie about the symptoms out of fear. 1. Cannot remember what month or date it is. 2. Cannot remember where an item has been placed. 3. Repeats the same question. 4. Forgets about promises. 5. Goe

373rd Turtle Marathon

Those looking for an energizing morning walk through the woods should join the 373rd Turtle Marathon. It will be a great chance to enjoy the open-air at Namsan Mountain with its well-padded jogging tracks and wooden fences. As an added bonus, there is also a chance to win various prizes. Along with regular citizens, the newly crowned 2008 Miss Korea finalists will also participate in the marathon, and Evergood Life CEO Kim Mi-kyung will be the honorary head of the event. Much like how the turtle in Aesop's fable would have completed his race, no running is involved. The event ― organized by The Korea Times' sister company, the Hankook Ilbo ― is a scenic seven-kilometer walk through Namsan Mountain, which has taken place once a month since 1978. Afterwards, comedian Lee Sang-yong will host a sideshow with various programs. Participants can help themselves to Nongshim tomato juice and other snacks, and raffle-winners can take home prizes such as kitchen goods and bicycles. Middle and high school students who participate in beautifying the environment will all receive certi

Navigation System Helps Knee Joint Surgery

By Bae Ji-sook Staff Reporter Unfortunately, growing old can bring with it those dreaded knee problems, making it difficult for older folk to run and get up and down stairs. In Korea, however, people tend to put off doing anything about their problematic knees until they can hardly move and then find themselves having to crawl to the doctors' desk asking for help, Prof. Bae Dae-kyung of Kyung Hee University Medical Center told the Korea Times. Causes of weak knees are various ― menopause and other hormonal changes, including osteoporosis, weakening muscles and bones; a squatting posture; crossing the legs; and crooked bone structure among others. All these put pressure on the knee joints, causing big problems in walking, stretching or even standing up. Asians, many of whom are more accustomed to sitting on the floor rather than a chair, are more likely to have such weaker knees, and women are more susceptible because they spend so much time cleaning or cooking. When diagnosed with the very first stage of knee joint disorder, one can get over it through simple exerc

(7) Ten Celestial Stems

By Janet Shin The five elements of wood, fire, earth, metal and water have yin and yang. As we learned previously, everything has yin and yang. The 10 celestial stems will show how yin and yang are associated with the five elements. The 10 celestial stems are intangible forces from heaven, while the 12 terrestrial branches are tangible energy from earth. As all natural beings exist and change by harmonious or disharmonious energies from heaven and earth, the celestial stems and terrestrial branches were made and respond to each other. We read human lives by the relationships and reactions between celestial stems and terrestrial branches. This is saju (four pillars). The 10 celestial stems start from gap to gye. Yin and yang are applied to each stem individually. Then the energies of the five elements are affiliated with them as well. (See chart 1) The properties of each stem will be explained by classifying them as the five elements. By looking at one's four pillars, an individual can tell which elements his or her four pillars consist of and what specific element rep

Vacationers Alerted Against Food Poisoning

By Bae Ji-sook Staff Reporter Vacationers are being warned about food poisoning during the summer vacation. About 86 percent of vibrio enteritis, one of the most common forms of food poisoning, occurs between July and September. If left out under the hot sun, food can become dangerous for consumption in just four hours, experts say. The Korea Food and Drug Administration has released some advice to help people avoid food poisoning. 1. In high temperatures, foods easily go bad. Therefore, if eating outside, keep food in an icebox, only removing that which is to be consumed immediately. 2. Only use clean water when cooking. 3.Always try to boil food before consumption: Sushi may sound tempting, but you should boil fish and other marine products. Raw fish can cause vibrio enteritis poisoning. The vibrio virus is found on the skin and in the intestines of fish. Washing these parts thoroughly with tap water can reduce the risk of infection. Also, try to keep food under 5 degrees Celsius and wash or sterilize cooking tools before and after use. Boil drinking water, to

Breast Cancer is Curable

By Bae Ji-sook Staff Reporter Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer diagnosed among Korean women. Roughly one out of 40 women are diagnosed with the disease, which made up 16.8 percent of all female cancer patients in 2002, according to government data. Prof. Noh Dong-young of Seoul National University Hospital said Korean women are experiencing dramatic changes in their physiology, which are contributing to the increased cases of breast cancer, these changes include increases in height and breast size, earlier menstruation and later menopause. Changes in lifestyle are also seen as contributing factors, with Korean females these days drinking and smoking more. ``Also they are having fewer children and are more reluctant to breastfeed them.'' he said. Noh said that in comparison with the majority of females from other countries who contract breast cancer in their 50s and 60s, more Korean females get it in their 30s and 40s. In the early days, breast cancer usually meant a woman had to ``give up her life as a female'' as the operation required the

Lesson 157: Advanced Haengma 3

By Nam Chi-hyung Finding an appropriate move when playing Baduk depends a lot on the position of the stones. In certain cases, you don't even need to read what would come, because the position itself decides the consequences. Haengma is nothing more than a theory about those frequently-occurring positions so that you can recognize and consider them. The one we're going to learn in this lesson is the ``double-bend.'' Diagram 1 Black 1 is a move according to the proverb ``hit the head of three stones'' and White 2 is the usual bend against it. The question is, what should be Black's next move? Please take into account the fact that the three ▲-marked white stones have weaknesses. Diagram 2 It is too meek for Black to extend with 1. It lets White live in the corner with a decent-sized territory, and the lower side also remains without an owner. Diagram 3 The answer is to bend once again with 1, namely the ``double-bend.'' To give an atari with White 2 is not for capturing Black 1 with A, which is actually impossible because of the weaknesses at B and C, but for

(6) Five Elements of Nature (2)

By Janet Shin As we learned before, in Saju wood represents spring, fire represents summer, metal stands for autumn and water for winter, while earth represents the balancing season or the transitional time. If the season starts from spring to summer, summer to autumn and autumn to winter, then wood changes to fire, fire to earth, earth to metal and metal to water. Looking at the movements of the five elements, there are mutual generations (nourishment) and restrictions. Mutual generation (nourishment) means that one element nourishes the other element. Mutual restriction (restraint) means one element restricts the other. Here, I further explain how the five elements react to and influence each other. Mutual nourishment (generation or inter-promotion): Wood->Fire->Earth->Metal->Water Wood makes fire by burning (wood generates fire) Fire makes the ashes from the wood nourish the earth (fire nourishes earth) Earth contains metal and makes metal hard (earth generates metal) Metal purifies the water (metal generates water; water comes from rocks) Wate
