(11) 10 Celestial Stems – Gyeong and Sin

By Janet Shin Four pillars, or saju in Korean, is a study to understand and predict our life by analyzing a person's birth year, month, day and time. Studying saju, which involves knowing one's self, is one of the most valuable things in life. Studying saju is an eye-opening process. Whether we are capable or not, we always have to face our destiny. Some may overcome it and make a better future by learning lessons from the past, while others may be crushed after failing to overcome trials. One should not evaluate saju as 'good or bad' but there could be a good saju that allows someone to overcome challenges better than anyone else. But there also could be a miserable life filled with bad luck. The fact is that we cannot change saju because we are born with it. Everyone meets unexpected incidents in their lives, whether they are good or bad. The key is how we handle them. Open your eyes to see and find who you are and where you are by studying saju. Now, let's look at metal, one of the five natural elements that determine your character. ● The west ● Autumn ● The pl

New Cervical Cancer Vaccine Introduced

By Bae Ji-sook Staff Reporter Good news to women in Korea: there will be another vaccine to block cervical cancer on the market this week. GlaxoSmithKline is releasing its human papillomavirus (HPV) antigen Cervarix in Korea after it was approved by the Korea Food and Drug Administration. It will be the second vaccine of its kind released in Korea, where cervical cancer is the second most diagnosed gynecological cancer annually. Cervarix has proven to be effective in blocking HPV type 16 and 18 for more than 6.4 years after three shots. Unlike its rival Gardasil, Cervarix is said to be effective on women over 26 years old, bringing light to women who had already suffered from HPV infection or are worrying about the possibility. The vaccine is authorized for women between 10-45 years of age in Australia. Seventy-two countries including Britain, which decided to provide the vaccination to school girls between 12-13, have approved its sales. Its exact comparison to the function of Gardasil has yet to be made, but Samsung Medical Center doctor Kim Byoung-gie suggests yo

Tips for Healthy Chuseok

By Bae Ji-sook Staff Reporter With Chuseok, or Korean Thanksgiving Day, just around the corner, many will once again take to the road to meet up family members they haven't seen in a while. However, driving for a long time requires careful preparation for safety and comfort to be kept to a maximum. Here are some tips from Dr. Yoo Jun-hyun of Samsung Medical Center about holiday healthcare. 1. Be prepared for carsickness: Take some anti-sickness patches with you. Either take the medication at least an hour before the drive or put on the patch four hours ahead. If you have glaucoma or prostatitis consult your pharmacist or doctor before use. 2. If stung by a bee, try to remove the sting with a plastic card and massage the wound with ice. You can apply some anti-histamine or steroid ointment. If not, pat some milk on the part. The best way to prevent a bee sting is to cover your flesh with dark tone cloths or shoes and avoid wearing too thick or fragrant makeup. Also wear gloves. If you see bees, avoid making loud sudden noises. Should you be bitten by a snake, you

Eye Surgeries Evolve to Further Eliminate Shortsightedness

By Bae Ji-sook Staff Reporter Near sightedness is a sure source of discomfort and stress, especially for those strongly afflicted with such. Demand for operations to cure it is growing, according to Yang Hun, director of BS Eye Center. The most common operations are LASIK, LASEK and IntraLASIK, which require the cutting of a certain part of the cornea; and Implantable Contact Lens surgery, where a contact lens is inserted behind the iris. In LASIK surgery, a flap is cut in the cornea and pulled back to expose the corneal bed. This exposed surface is then ablated to the desired shape with an excimer laser, following which the flap is replaced. The method requires only two to three days recovery while giving minimum discomfort to patients. However, in the early period, there were some allegations that some patients lost contrast sensitivity and couldn't see well enough in the night. Also a thicker cornea is needed, limiting the range of recipients. LASEK came as an alternative for patients with sensitive eyes. The surgery permanently changed the shape of the anterio

(10) 10 Celestial Stems — Mu and Gi

By Janet Shin ● Center ● Three enclosures, change of seasons ● The planet Saturn ● The color yellow ● Digestive system, spleen and stomach ● Patient, prudent, stable, reliable, hard-working, ambitious, stubborn, and very energetic ● Disciplined, logical, governed by service and duty to others Earth is a central balance of the other elements and it can lend qualities to all 12 animals (12 terrestrial branches). On the surface, it may seem easy to understand earth but actually it is very complicated. We can't describe it in one word. Earth usually balances the other four elements and controls it in the middle. Among five elements, earth is the most harmonious one and it contains wood, fire, metal and water. Earth contains the ingredients and nurtures the other materials as if it is a mother. In one thought, the earth can be regarded as one simple element out of five, however it cannot be simply described as one element. So once you understand earth well, you will find yourself positioned in a higher level of saju study. 5) Mu earth Mu people have faith but

Buddhists Protest Poised for Long Haul

By Han Sang-hee Staff Reporter Buddhists repeated their demand Monday for President Lee Myung-bak to apologize for alleged discrimination against their beliefs. They announced that they are preparing for a drawn out protest against the administration. ``If the government continues to neglect our demands, it will have to take full responsibility for the terrible situation that may follow,'' Ven. Seungwon, the spokesperson of the Jogye Order said at a press conference held at Jogye Temple Monday. He also added that the Buddhist community will strengthen its countermeasure commission and make it a permanent organization. ``Buddhist leaders will hold a meeting Wednesday and make specific decisions,'' he said. The leaders of the Buddhist community held ``protest'' services at temples nationwide Sunday. President Lee, a Presbyterian, has been criticized for filling his Cabinet with member of his church and for not sending a congratulatory messages on Buddha's birthday, which was later explained as a technical error. The Buddhist leader mentioned that despite th

Pelviscopy Could Do All Gynecological Cancer Surgeries

By Bae Ji-sook Staff Reporter Cervical cancer is the second most diagnosed cancer among women. About 500,000 women in the world are diagnosed with it every year and more than half die. In Korea, about 4,300 women are newly diagnosed with the deadly disease every year. The disease becomes serious as malignant tumors at the cervix uteri or cervical area grow. Unlike other cancers, its cause is relatively well known ― human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is said to account for about 70 percent of cases. The majority of virus types are transmitted through sexual contact and infect the anogenital region. The virus does not significantly affect males. According to Dr. Nam Ju-hyeon of Asan Medical Center no genetic component to the disease has yet been established but women who start menstruation early, are promiscuous ― or have husbands that are ― are more exposed to the cancer than others. Since it involves so-called safe sex and hygiene, cervical cancer was considered an ``underdeveloped country-typed disease.'' Thanks to rising awareness in hygiene and the av

Basically people born with fire energy are polite but on the other hand, they can't bear evil. Fire will basically need wood to supplement fuel energy. It melts metal to make valuable jewelry. But if it is too strong, it does not harmonize with its surroundings. Then it will require water energy to cool it down. Fire is divided into two, byeong fire and jeong fire as celestial stems 1) Byeong fire Byeong people have a distinct personality. It likes to shed light on everything and hates those who are impolite. We can see the sun an

My Body Is Getting Tilted After Trauma

By Lee June-ho One of the common complaints especially from young patients is that his or her body becomes curved out of shape after minor trauma at school or office. They put real emphasis on their ``distortion'' by describing that ``one buttock or shoulder is higher than the other'' and submit the ``evidence'' from x-rays taken at local clinics. Surely these youngsters would be more sensitive to what their exterior looks like, rather than having an idea of what is going on in their ``interior.'' The medical terminology 'scoliosis' describes the phenomenon when the human spine is curved and deviates from the real center axis of the body. Scoliosis' could be divided into two types ― one is ``functional'' and the other is the real ``structural.'' As for the latter, or idiopathic type, the definite causative factor is a mystery in many cases and therefore an early diagnosis is crucial to deter aggravating the degree of deformity or cardiopulmonary functional deterioration. However, the former functional type could be caused by minor trauma to a lateral back muscle or from

Atopic Dermatitis Hard to Cure, but Controllable

By Bae Ji-sook Staff Reporter It is getting colder― signs of a change of season. The mercury is dropping and humidity is changing, too. Each turning point of a season brings tough and tearful days to atopic dermatitus sufferers. Some scratch their skin raw while others find their skin haggard and reddish all over. These types of skin disease― in European countries they call it eczema― is seen on about 15 percent of new born babies, according to Prof. Kim Kyu-han of Seoul National University Hospital. There isn't an exact figure yet, but the number is growing every year. Also, adults and adolescents find such symptoms too, so the actual number of people suffering from this skin disorder is larger, he says. The causes of eczema are still unknown, but many experts assume an immune system that leans towards being extra sensitive to allergens could be one of them. Some genetic factors, as well as pollution could produce acute symptoms, too, he says. Kim also suggested that nowadays people living in too hygienic an environment has weakened the immune system, assisting a
