Second daughter syndrome

Dear Dr. P,I have two daughters and one son. The eldest daughter is five years old, the second daughter is three years old, and the boy just turned 10 months. I have been suffering a lot everyday because of my second daughter.I don’t know why but it seems that she may be feeling left out. She is craving attention from me and my husband, and harasses her baby brother. When she thinks that I am not looking, she pressures him and pushes him to fall down. Sometimes she takes her hands off while carrying him. I have tried to persuade her sometimes and scold her at other times, but it has been of no use. Please give me a wise answer how I should deal with her.A mom from North Jeolla Province Dear mother of three,I call this kind of phenomenon as “sandwich syndrome” or “second daughter syndrome.” The eldest daughter gets enough love and attention from her parents because she is the first and eldest, and the youngest son also gets an abundance as the only son, which is a very important position in the Korean family. So your second daughter might feel a defi

Bad breath -halitosis

By Lee Sung-hunLast month, it was reported the Brad Pitt gave Angelina Jolie a type of breath mint as a joke gift on Valentine’s Day. Whether that report was true or not, bad breath does affect quite a lot of people, celebrities and ordinary folks alike. Depending on the severity and the occasion, bad breath can be anything from a slightly embarrassing matter to a self-esteem issue that affects a person’s personal life and relationships.Causes for bad breath can be largely classified into those that are directly produced in the mouth (intraoral causes) and those that are related with other organs of our body (extraoral causes). Approximately 90 percent of such causes can be traced directly within the mouth. The unpleasant odor is produced by volatile sulfur compounds (VSC, think of a “rotten egg” smell) which are produced by the naturally occurring bacteria that break down protein. This odor from VSC is predominantly affected by the continually forming tongue coating of food debris, dead epithelial cells and overlying bacteria. As the surface of the tongue is

Spring cleaning and joints

By Song Sang-hoWe are in mid-March when everyone begins stretching their winter weary bodies in the shy sunshine. Some people even go excitedly on picnics with families and friends, but unfortunately, as their enthusiasm increases, so too does the likelihood of accidents.During spring, orthopedists are most likely to take in housewives injured at home — many suffer injures during spring cleaning. When they are cleaning, they move their bodies and joints as much as people who do weight-training, exposing themselves to an equal degree of risk from injury. In addition, when the housewives clean things located in high places, they often use ladders or chairs, from which they may fall and suffer broken knees or wrists.A housewife is wiping the floor in this file photo. Doctors warn that joints can be injured while cleaning.             / Korea Times fileIn particular, women in their 50s and 60s should be more careful about their joints than other people when they clean. Middle-aged women have weaker joints because of aging and the menopause, an

Horseback riding for ADHD

A clinical test is planned to treat ADHD children through horseback riding.                                                                                                   / Korea Time fileBy Yoon Ja-youngSamsung Medical Center said it is looking for participants in a clinical test to clarify the effect of horseback riding on children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).ADHD is one of the most common psychiatric problems among school age children. When left untreated, it can lead to problems such as low self esteem, trouble with interpersonal skills and other negative functions. However, only 11 percent of those with the condition here are estimated to be treated because many people still don’t regard ADHD as a disease.Curre

To crib or not to crib

By Jane HanI finally put an end to one of the biggest dilemmas for expecting parents — to crib or not to crib. For those of you who haven’t joined the baby club yet, let me first tell you this: A crib is not just any piece of ordinary wooden furniture. Believe it or not, it’s a potential lifesaver for moms and dads who’d much rather get a good night sleep than wake up every hour or two with a crying baby sleeping in the same bed.So why don’t all parents take the easy road and go with a crib?Well, there’s the whole attachment parenting philosophy where parents believe sleeping together creates a super tight parent-child connection that one can never again experience later in life. There are supposedly about a dozen other arguable benefits, but I won’t get into them since I am a crib believer.Since when? Since last weekend. After talking to all my mom friends and doing about a week’s worth of online research, my husband and I decided that there’s no way we’re going to keep two sensitive infants in our not-big-enough-for-four-peop

Precocious puberty

By Yoon Ja-youngDo you remember a friend who was much taller than you and your peers when you were a kid? Perhaps you meet this person a decade later, and find that he or she hasn’t grown any more. If so, your friend probably had precocious puberty.Precocious puberty refers to the condition where secondary sexual characteristics, such as the development of breasts or the enlargement of testicles happen prematurely. Such anomalies can hinder a child from growing tall as well as causing stress.According to Prof. Lee Kee-hyoung of Korea University Anam Hospital, girls used to start menarche at around 16 or 17 years of age a hundred years ago. Now, the average age is around 12. This is partly due to better nutrition, but concern is also growing over precocious puberty. According to data from the Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service, there were around 6,400 such patients diagnosed in 2006, but this more than quadrupled to 28,000 in 2010.Puberty starts with the secretion of sex hormones estrogen and testosterone, which is triggered by a hormone called gonadotropin secrete

(229) Addicted to plastic surgery - does it change your destiny?

By Janet Shin When it comes to a face reading, a fair number of people relate it to plastic surgery. In almost every media interview I have had, I have been asked whether changing one’s face alters one’s destiny. When I answered, “Yes,” people were surprised. If I say it is even written in their saju, they cannot contain their shock. They do not fully comprehend, though, that such surgery may bring misfortune to one’s destiny.Quite a few plastic surgeons attend my lectures or contact me to get physiognomic knowledge to convince their customers, since they know people are concerned about the correlation between plastic surgery and the alteration of face readings. By providing a reliable service, they are expecting to promote their business. Face readings are often abused for various purposes.Face reading lectures attract youths, while others, such as those on saju and feng shui, are usually filled with middle-aged audience members. The youths wait until the end of the lecture to ask me which parts in their faces need to be fixed, and how. It is not s
