Grooming is about details

By Kim Bo-eunThe market for women’s cosmetics and fashion products is diminishing, but men are making up for it.Sales on the men’s floor in the EAST building of Galleria, a luxury department store in Cheongdam-dong in Gangnam, rose an average of 30 percent year on year during the first three quarters of this year. The renovation of the seventh floor of the main Shinsegae Department Store in Hoehyeon-dong as a "men's floor" also reflects the increasing demand.Grooming and style are no longer considered female domains, but part of a disciplined lifestyle that enhances everyone’s quality of life. As more men pay attention to appearance, W decided to look at grooming trends among various age groups. W interviewed one representative of each age group to get diverse perspectives: men in their 30s, 40s and 50s.Ryo Chuh-yeop, researcher at the Agency for Defense Development- 30sAt first glance, 30-year-old Ryo Chuh-yeop looks like a model or someone working in the fashion industry. Bed and spine health

By Kim Sang-hyukIn archaeological museums such as the Romano-Germanic Museum in Cologne, Germany, it is very common to see stone beds. Did ancient people use such stiff beds comfortably? From documentaries about ancient people’s lives, aristocratic or royal families ate food or gave orders while lying down on the bed. Back then, it was regarded as a symbol of representing their social status. In the medieval era, a bed was regarded as a social tool; there were social beds in the living room, and such beds spoke for owner’s social power or interior taste. However, although many people believe that the bed plays a critical role in the interior perspective, much more emphasis is placed on the mattress these days as it is closely related to our health. Much research has been conducted to develop a mattress that is both comfortable and beneficial to our health. Correlation between mattress and spine disease Looking at this relation by types of spine disease, a herniated lumbar disk has some correlation to mattresses, and there are greater correlation between chronic bac

Forget the funny bone - elbow injuries are not joke

By Lee Sung-hunWe have been blessed with good weather for a couple of weeks. In general, spring weather is usually good, but with the yellow dust many people opt to choose stay indoors. Autumn, on other hand, has provided clear blue skies and clean air ― ideal for outdoor activities. Those of us who like golf look forward to playing a round in such weather every year. Some avid golfers get out to the driving range to hit a bucket of golf balls. While taking multiple swings, some unexpectedly feel elbow pain. This usually lasts for some time, and the players end up seeking medical help.If you touch your elbow, you may feel slight bumps, which are called epicondyles. The most common cause of pain in the elbow joint is inflammation of the epicondyle, which is called epicondylitis. If inflammation occurs on the lateral (outer) epicondyle, it is commonly referred to as tennis elbow. If the pain is on the medial (inner) epicondyle, it is called golfers’ elbow. But these problems are not limited to golfers or tennis players. Nowadays, they are quite common among housewives, office wor

Oriental doctors banned from using 'modern' device

By Jung Min-hoUnlike many countries in the West, Korea has two types of doctors ― the conventional doctors most people are familiar with, and Oriental medicine practitioners, who use techniques such as acupuncture and moxibustion. One of the long-running disputes between the two groups is whether to allow Oriental doctors to use modern medical appliances to treat their patients.According to industry sources Thursday, another device was recently added to the list of devices that Oriental doctors cannot use, following a decision by an appeals court. On Sept. 19, an Oriental doctor was fined 400,000 ($380) by the Seoul Eastern District Court for using an intense pulsed light (IPL) machine, which is used to perform skin treatments such as hair removal.According to the Korean medical laws, doctors, dentists, nurses and Oriental doctors are all classified as “health care providers,” and they are only allowed to provide medical services they are trained for.But the problem is that Oriental medicine doctors are not usually trained in specific tasks, and the laws do not clearly

(293) Territorial disputes in global history

By Janet ShinThe Scottish independence referendum held on Sept. 18 resulted in the citizens of that country deciding not to separate from Britain. Yet the poll results also showed that a significant percentage of Scots voted “Yes,” meaning that the issue of independence will continue to be a contentious one within the United Kingdom. In global history, quite a number of territorial disputes occurred among nations. Some still remain controversial with conflicting claims while others came to the conclusion to cede as stated in a treaty or by other means such as the bayonet. Feng shui masters regard domains and the landscape within them, surrounding conditions, the flow of the roads and rivers, and even the height of it as hugely significant factors that determine people’s destiny. This applies not only to small details but also to the bigger picture. It includes continents or the whole world as well as individuals living within countries. For example, Gangnam in Seoul is an area where qi is gathered. It is situated slightly lower than other districts, e

Delivery decision: Korea or US?

Some pregnant Korean women staying in the U.S. may have difficulty deciding whether to deliver in America or Korea. / Korea TimesBy Jane HanIt’s decision time again. With less than four months left till delivery, once again I’m faced with a bunch of decisions to make before the birth of my next baby. But this time, it’s not just decisions over diapers and bottles, but something more significant ― whether to deliver in Korea or the U.S.This big question has been keeping me up many nights because the consequence will not only affect me, but my youngest child waiting to be born, my twin girls, my husband and both sides of our family. It’s a pretty big deal for all of us.Now, why am I even contemplating this to begin with?Well, as many experienced mothers know, the first pregnancy is very much different from any consecutive pregnancies that follow.First and foremost, you do not have the leisure to just sit back and relax and enjoy your much-deserved rest during any part of the pregnancy.Honestly, it sucks, but that’s reality.Five months into pregnancy, I reali
