How to deal with balding and hair loss

By Lee Sung-hunA fifth-grader visited my clinic a few weeks ago with his mother. The boy had a small bald spot, the size of a 50-won coin, near the front of his scalp. The boy, who already had a sensitive temperament, had recently moved to a new school and was preparing for exams. The boy’s mother said her husband also suffered from this problem from time to time.Alopecia areata, or spot baldness, is a rather common condition that can affect the hair follicles and not too uncommonly the fingernails and toenails.Typically, coin-size bald patches appear, mostly on the scalp. However, they can also affect the beard, eyelashes, eyebrows and other body hair.A couple of very small bald spots may not concern people much, but hair loss can expand to the entire scalp, which is called alopecia totalis, and even to the whole body, which is called alopecia universalis. We do not know exactly what causes alopecia areata, but it is considered a type of autoimmune disease. The most crucial function of our immune system is to distinguish between our own tissue and material that is foreign, so that

Spinal fractures - common problem for the elderly

By Kim Sang-hyukAs we grow older, many changes occur in our body. Most commonly, the elderly experience a rapid drop in bone density. This may result in osteoporosis, which makes bone susceptible to fracture even with the slightest impact. In addition, about a half of people aged 70 or over have experienced osteoporotic fracture; thus, it is important to understand how to manage this condition.Osteoporotic fractures are found more often among women than among men, since women innately have less dense bone and experience greater loss in bone density after menopause due to the lack of estrogen. Therefore, middle-aged women should pay great attention to the importance of avoiding osteoporotic fracture.Osteoporotic spine compression fracture may occur without any specific trauma incidents.Osteoporosis may result in a fracture in any part of our body; however, spinal fractures represent 30-35 percent of osteoporotic fractures. The critical point is that osteoporotic spine compression fracture may occur without any traumatic impact, as the bone becomes extremely weak from osteoporosis. When

Ministry hit for 'harmful' toothpaste

In the annual parliamentary inspection of government ministries, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety was criticized for its lax management, notably harmful substances contained in children’s toothpastes. / YonhapBy Jung Min-hoThe Ministry of Food and Drug Safety is being criticized for its alleged lax monitoring of children’s toothpastes following recent reports that some of the products contain harmful substances.Lawmakers cast doubt on whether parabens, a preservative used in some cosmetic and pharmaceutical products, and triclosan, an antibacterial agent, are safe for children, Tuesday.During a National Assembly inspection session, Rep. Kim Yong-ik from the New Politics Alliance for Democracy (NPAD) pointed out that the ministry allows 0.2 percent of parabens in a toothpaste, but only 0.02 percent in a mouth-cleaning wet tissue.“I don’t understand why the two products have a different standard for parabens, given that both of them are used for infants and toddlers,” he said.He said that children’s toothpaste is actually bigger concern as t

'Terrible twos' already?

By Jane HanEvery parent, at one point or another, may believe that their baby is an angel. Not just figuratively speaking, but really, like literally, an angel sent straight from heaven. After all, why wouldn’t they? The tiny little human beings resemble mom and dad in the cutest way ever. But wait till they start developing their self-ego and start wanting things their way. That’s when the real fun begins.I never considered my twin girls to be tough to please, but lately they’ve been two very high-maintenance babies on a mad mood swing. We’re all visiting Korea, so it’s understandable that they’re completely derailed from the jetlag and drastic change in daily routine. Even mom and dad are struggling to get things together. But after two weeks, I’m still seeing that the girls aren’t their usual selves. They went from always smiley and cheerful babies to easily irritable and short-tempered little individuals. What happened? Are they still tired from the 14-hours plane ride? Are they each getting a new tooth? Are they constantly overtired fr

Finding your own fragrance

By Yun Suh-young and Kim Mun-jeong (intern reporter)“Odors have a power of persuasion stronger than that of words, appearances, emotions, or will,” wrote Patrick Suskind in his book “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer.”Fragrance is one of the characteristics that define a person, instinctively. It is the power of fragrance that can make your head turn while walking down the street, in an effort to figure out who that captivating scent belongs to.Perfumes such as Chanel No.5 have always been steady sellers. But nowadays, there’s an increasing demand for new, unique and exclusive fragrances that can define you and differentiate you from others.Hence the advent of “niche perfumes,” which are perfumes made with the rarest ingredients to create the rarest of smells. Perfumers who whip up these fragrances are not financially bound to a certain budget and are given the freedom to explore their artistic flair, which are reasons why they can come up with creative notes. Niche perfumes also contain higher percentages of “eau de parfum,” a conc

Edinburgh, Scotland's magical capital

A view of the back alley in the old townBy Yoon Jie-minArticle and photos by Yoon Jie-minEven before visiting Edinburgh, I was excited at the thought of being in the city where J.K. Rowling reportedly wrote the first book that the Harry Potter films were adapted from in a café called “The Elephant House” located in the old town.Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland and retains a strong sense of its historic past.I had imagined the city to be bleak and gloomy. But the Edinburgh I experienced was totally the opposite. The city was buzzing with lively entertainment and activity because the most popular festivals of the year were being held while I was there.Without doubt, the festivals make the city more vibrant and attractive.Edinburgh is well-known for its world-class art and culture festivals. The Edinburgh International Festival, which was first held in 1947, attracts world’s class performances while the Fringe, formed by groups of uninvited performers who were not part of the official program, is now reputedly the largest arts festival in the world.People re
