Gamjatang

By Daniel GrayOne popular Korean dish created out of necessity is gamjatang or pork-bone potato stew. The dish has its origins in the Incheon dock area where laborers working in the construction industry wanted to enjoy cheap and hearty food after a long work day.The soup consists of slowly cooked pork spine and potatoes topped with sesame leaves. The result is a satisfying dish that goes great with a bowl of hot rice. It was cooked throughout the day, so it then could be eaten at the end of the work day. The dish was often enjoyed with shots of chilled Korean soju. After the first train line was built to connect the Incheon area with Seoul, one entrepreneur decided that he wanted to set up a restaurant which specialized in the dish. The first restaurant of this type was built near Noryangjin station, near the end of the Han River railway construction. The dish became a big hit and soon many copycat establishments began popping up all over Korea. The name “gamjatang” is a play on words.Gamja means potatoes, but the dish isn't named after this tuber. The name refers to the por

Fukushima sake raises health concerns

By Jung Min-hoConcerns are growing over the safety of Japanese food imports following a disclosure Wednesday that sake was imported from Fukushima, where a tsunami left a nuclear power plant seeping radiation three years ago.According to data from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, Korea imported over 25 tones of the Japanese traditional alcohol beverage from March 2011 to this July. The Korean government has banned importing rice from the area but allowed sake, which is made from fermented rice and water. The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety sought to dispel concerns, saying that every batch of sake imported from Fukushima was tested and none showing signs of radioactive contamination was allowed into Korea.Yet some people are not convinced.“The ministry conducts just a sampling inspection, which cannot be trusted 100 percent,” Rep. Rhee Mok-hee from the New Politics Alliance for Democracy said. “I have contacted government ministries and Korea Customs Service to get detailed information about what rice and water was used to make the products, but none was able to a

How to beat dysmenorrhea and stay painless

By Lee Sung-hun A healthy woman’s body naturally goes through monthly menstrual cycles. The female body prepares itself for pregnancy by thickening the membrane walls of the uterus and discharges the new tissue if conception does not happen. The cyclic periodicity of menstruation is the reason for the commonly used term “period.”Menstruation is a sign that the bearer is a healthy woman able to conceive, and it also offers a natural way to release the blood stasis out of the female body. Of the number of symptoms and signs caused by hormonal changes during menstruation, the one thing that women find most irritating are menstrual cramps, the medical term for which is dysmenorrhea. The degree of pain associated with it varies from patient to patient, and some women have expressed concerns about the health of their uterus due to the severity of the cramps that hinder their normal daily activities.Dysmenorrhea is a rather common gynecological symptom that about half of all women have experienced, and there are two types: primary dysmenorrhea and secondary dysmenorrhe

Does bracing really work for spinal disorders?

By Kim Sang-hyuk Most people, from students to office workers, spend a great deal of time sitting in front of desks. This often results in inappropriate postures that cause distorted spines.A number of companies noticed this problem early on and now there are many items available to help people correct their sitting postures: spine supports, which manufacturers say correctly aligns the spine; a belt, which claims to straighten the shoulders; and an instrument on which one can lie down to receive acupressure on the spine and the surrounding muscles. The list of such items is endless. However, these devices have not always proven to be effective. Choosing Items for spine correction should be chosen extremely carefully because results differ with each individual according to their condition or age. Also, outcomes vary depending on how each person uses or wears the equipment. In which cases have braces proven to be effective? When can patients expect to see significant results, such as relief from pain or corrected posture as the result of wearing a brace? First, in the cas

(291) Curse of imprudent developments - Teachings of Feng Shui

By Janet Shin The sinkholes continuously found in some districts these days arouse great fear among people living in urban areas. Various causes are enumerated, such as suffosion or dissolution of rocks, when we include natural ones. However what matters now is whether they are generated naturally or not. We are concerned about those formed in large cities near residential and downtown area. They are associated with high-rise buildings and complicated transportation system. It is told that the excessive constructions or inappropriate applications of geographical features both above and underground are critical causes. In the process of city developments, subways go deeper and closer and buildings rise higher, which affect unexpected transformation of geological features. Feng shui provides some correlative explanations about this. Feng shui, literally representing wind and water, is compared to buildings and roads in modern times. It teaches us how to acquire positive energy for the healthier, happier and wealthier life through the well-suited location o

(290) Chuseok and leap month

By Janet ShinThis year’s “Chuseok” is coming up fast, as the holiday lands on the much earlier 2nd week of September according to the solar year. Known as the Korean equivalent of Thanksgiving, many families will do their holiday shopping to celebrate the sooner-than-expected holiday. But have you ever wondered why certain lunar years have major holidays at the beginning of the month and why others do not?Studying leap months is crucial to understanding how the seasons ― further broken down into 24 divisions of the year ― are determined. It is the primary focus of saju and may also forecast year-to-year climate fluctuations. For example, why are certain years more humid? Why does summer end earlier during certain years? Which years will have more rain or which years will most likely suffer droughts? To answer these questions, it is fundamental to study astronomical geography. Since ancient times, people putt a high emphasis in understanding the calendar. Nowadays, we depend on technology to tell us what time and day it is, such as a computer or smart phone application

The home was a charming little place with cream-colored walls, warm lighting and Scandinavian-vibe furnishings – no traces of the building’s age were visible.Jang and her husband moved into the 19-year-old apartment three months ago, when they got married.
