Seersucker to dominate summer style

By Todd SampleAside from linen, there are few fabrics which epitomize summer style more than seersucker. With origins in India over a century ago, the puckered cotton cloth called seersucker (from the Hindi shir o shakar meaning "milk and sugar") has become known as the classic fabric worn during the summer months by gentlemen in the southern United States.Fortunately today, the popularity of the seersucker suit, best when paired with a plain white shirt and a mint julep, is no longer limited to a few southern states, as dandies around the world sport pants, shirts, suits, shorts and even pocket squares made from this iconic fabric. In Korea, for example, Seersucker Day, a social event at which both men and women don clothing made from seersucker fabric, takes place each year in late June.Favored as a cool fabric that is machine-washable and never needs ironing, seersucker is traditionally only worn for a limited period of time, from Memorial Day in late May to Labor Day, the first Monday in September. This “rule” has become somewhat more flexible today as seersucker's popul

Raison d'etre of models

By Victoria KimKorea's first fashion models were Ha Young-ae, Jo Mi-ryung, and Kang Gui-hee who debuted in No Rah No’s fashion show in 1956 in Seoul. Their occupation was housewife, actress, and Miss Korea, respectively. Ha Young-ae was the one who appeared on the show for the longest time until 1964.Few of the first generation of Korea’s fashion models ― Jo Hye-ran, Han Sung-hee, Song Young-shim, and Kim Hye-ran ― who were the first to receive walking and charming educational programs. In 1992, Lee So-ra opened a new era of the model industry by winning the "Super Model Competition," and fashion modeling became accepted as an official occupation. Lee So-ra continued her career not only as a fashion model but also as a celebrity. She became a role model for the younger generations, paving the way for the next generation of fashion models ― the occupation which had been, until then, shared by actresses, comedians, and anchors. As time passed, the ex-super model premium languished. Instead, rising models in global collections gained attention in the market.Park

Incheon BridgeBy Yun Suh-youngINCHEON ― Finding a travel destination overseas has become the norm for vacationers these days, but while people are heading out of the country, staying in can be a more economic yet leisurely option if you manage to avoid crowded regions.A plane flies over Incheon International AirportIncheon, a port city on the west coast of the Korean Peninsula, may be an ideal holiday destination due to its peaceful and quiet atmosphere despite being an economic hub. The city is also windy at all times - good weather to cool off during the hot summer. This article introduces two regions in Incheon which may serve as a perfect getaway for this summer vacation.A night view of Songdo citySongdoA 30-minute bus ride from Incheon International Airport is Songdo, an international business hub which is part of the region designated the Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ) in 2003.Because the land was artificially built on 1,500 acres of reclaimed land in 2001, the urban cityscape is systematic and structured. Solace in Samoa

By Jun Kyoung-wooA fruit market in ApiaMany people dream of an overseas vacation on an island with a luxury resort and emerald-colored ocean ― a paradise of new and fascinating scenes and places full of beautiful things. In the peak holiday season ― from July to August ― destinations are usually throbbing with tourists, many of them Koreans. But if you want to get away from it all, the South Pacific island of Samoa might be what you are looking for.It is difficult to find groups of tourists in Samoa because the travel industry is relatively new there. And it is difficult to spot Koreans, let alone find Korean guides. In Samoa, you need to be an English speaker to travel conveniently. Thankfully, most Samoans speak English very well. The road to Robert Louis Stevenson’s graveIf you have enough time, traveling around Samoa by bus may be an option, but if you are visiting on a tight schedule, renting a car is recommended. In Fiji or Vanuatu, where the travel industry is developed, there are luxury international chain resorts such as Le Meridien or St. Regis. Oriental therapy good for pregnant women

By Lee Seung-hunPregnancy is a dramatic event for women, both emotionally and physiologically.A pregnant woman can experience various symptoms that drastic and severe hormonal changes bring about.Although there are treatments available for the discomfort and pain, many expectant mothers forego such options for fear that they may adversely affect their babies. The government currently operates a voucher-type aid program for pregnant women and parents to partially subsidize the costs involved with pregnancy, childbirth and raising children.Included in this program are Oriental treatments, meaning that the government officially recognizes the effectiveness of these, and expectant mothers can obtain financial support for them. However, there are still many people who mainly ask about the safety of Oriental treatments such as hanyak (Oriental medication) and acupuncture. It is natural for mothers to become more cautious about medication of any type, more so than any other treatment.Especially, the fact that hanyak refers to a mixture of medicinal ingredients rather than a single substance ca

Hip arthritis may require surgery

By Kim Pil-Sung People usually consider arthritis to occur in the knee or shoulder joints. However, the hip joint can also be subject to arthritis like any other joint. There are several types of hip arthritis: degenerative due to joint aging or trauma, rheumatoid, suppurative, and tubercular. When hip arthritis occurs, patients experience pain in the region and discomfort in their daily life due to a limitation of the range of motion. There is extra weight placed onto the hip, especially while walking, which exacerbates pain and causes the sufferer to limp. When non-surgical treatment is ineffective, minimally invasive hip joint replacement surgery or hip arthroscopy is recommended. In the early stage of hip joint arthritis, non-surgical treatment such as medication and exercise treatments are preferentially employed. In the case of suppurative arthritis or tubercular arthritis, antituberculous medications are injected, and many cases symptoms require washing the joint through a surgical approach. In the case of degenerative arthritis, the symptoms develop gradually; people miss the d

Obesity -threat to knee joint

By  Song Sang-ho A 2010 news report revealed that 1 billion of the world’s 6 billion people were classed as overweight, out of which 300 million are said to be obese. The World Health Organization (WHO) predicted that by 2020 obesity would be the cause of 60% of all illnesses and 70% of all deaths, and is considered to be a serious issue in the category of Global Warming or Avian Influenza. The reason for such a focus on obesity is that it’s being commonly referred to as “the cause of all illnesses.”Typically, it is known to raise the risk of diabetes, hyperlipidemia and cardiovascular disease and it also affects joint health.Obesity causes early degenerative arthritis in the knee joints, which carry the entire weight of the rest of the body. For every 1kg of weight accumulated the amount of pressure on the knees increases four to seven times, and as most of the body’s weight is concentrated on the inner part of the knee, obesity can deform or damage the knees’ joints by placing excessive pressure on them or accelerating damage to the

Unexpected reactions confounding

Jon Rabiroff’s son is admired by a couple of waitresses recently as he sits with his father along a busy Itaewon walkway. / Courtesy of Jon RabiroffBy Jon Rabiroff As I sat outside an Itaewon bar recently drinking a beer with one hand as I held my 3-month-old son in my lap with the other, I braced for what I was sure would ― finally ― be my first exposure to the insensitive, inappropriate and obnoxious comments I have been expecting from strangers about the gap in our ages.As a first-time father, I am hardly sensitive ― heck, I’m proud ― that I look every bit the 55-year-old that I am, with my mostly bald head, graying temples, soft midsection and knees that sound like a bowl of just-milked Rice Krispies when I bend them. But, when my significantly younger wife got pregnant a year or so ago, I knew not everyone would embrace the sight of a father and son from extreme ends of the Benjamin Button spectrum. And, if they did not take offense to the perceived selfishness of a middle-aged man just starting down the road of fatherhood, surely there were going to be well

Keeping warm good for blood circulation

By Lee Seung-hun The seasons are rapidly changing. It felt as though spring arrived only a couple of weeks ago, but it’s already too warm to wear jackets outside. However, in spite of the warmer weather, there are some people who complain that their hands and feet are constantly cold.Indeed some of these folks would say that they are afraid to even shake hands with others for their cold hands have shocked others in the past. Some even wear socks and gloves when are go to bed in the middle of summer.Having overly cold extremities is treated as an illness on its own here in Korea, not just as a symptom of other illnesses.Cold extremities syndrome (CES) is known to be caused by lack of blood flow to the hands and feet due to overly sensitive sympathetic nerves contracting blood vessels, resulting in the patient feeling cold in the hands and feet.CES is more common among females than males, and especially so among the middle aged women. This is due to the more severe fluctuation of hormonal changes in the female body, and also because women are more susceptible to tension. In Orien

Hiking good for spinal health

By Kim Hyoung-Bok Spring has finally arrived, and many people are planning a picnic to the countryside or a hike to enjoy the beautiful weather.Hiking is a cardiac exercise, and it can also strengthen abdominal muscles and straighten the spine.Hiking is also known to be effective in preventing various adult diseases and osteoporosis. Also, hiking accelerates blood circulation to the nerve endings, so it is effective for patients who suffer from chronic spinal diseases. Spring hiking: what will it do to our spine? For people who have severe spine symptoms, hiking should be avoided, as it can worsen them. When hiking, our spine naturally bends backwards, ultimately putting pressure on spinal nerves. In addition, people who do not have much experience or do not exercise regularly often face sudden muscle or joint pain due to excessive hiking. As hiking also often involves walking on an uneven road, some can sprain their ankle or have a spinal injury when falling. Thus, much attention is required when hiking. Tips to prevent a spinal injury before hiking Hiking wear
