Chinese Actress to Star in Korean Musical

By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter The domestic film industry has had its eye on overseas markets and is introducing novelty by casting foreign actors in their works. Musicals are now doing the same. The 2001 Korean film "Failan'' starred Chinese actress Cecilia Cheung and Korean actor Choi Min-shik. This year, Yin You Can, 22, was selected as the female lead out of 50 finalists at an audition in Beijing. The musical "Failan'' will open Sept. 11 in Seoul's Daehangno district. ``It was a big challenge for me to come to Korea as I was doing plays and TV dramas in China. But I thought I shouldn't miss this opportunity to play Failan for my career. So I decided to come to Korea,'' Yin told The Korea Times. Yin is making her musical debut in "Failan.'' ``There is basically no big difference between musicals and plays. But the working style is a bit different between China and Korea. In a Korean musical, the production process is more interactive between an actor and a director,'' she said. Yin began studying at a traditional Chinese dance school at age 12. After five

This is exactly what Doosan Gallery's ``Art at Home, Wonderful Life" exhibit is all about. Doosan Gallery, located at Doosan Art Center, Yeonji-dong, Seoul, has been transformed into a house filled with colorful and unique art works created by 322 artists and designers. The exhibit, curated by Ryu Byeong-hak, is aimed at bringing art into an everyday setting for ordinary people. Art has always been seen as accessible only through galleries and museums, but Ryu wants to make it more familiar to people. The layout of the 200-square meter gallery space is similar to a real house, divided into a living room, a study room, a child's playroom and a bedroom. Walking inside the Doosan Gallery, visitors feel like they are entering someone's home. As you enter, a painting of a cute schoolgirl with the words ``Welcome Back Mr." greets you. Super Kidd Moving to the Top

By Han Sang-hee Staff Reporter The Hongik University area, or Hongdae, is a cultural haven full of trendy cafes, clubs, people and shops. The group Super Kidd has become a favorite among rock lovers and is working to expand its fan base outside of the hip area. The five-member group comprised of Hercheck, Zingo, Heavy Porter, Jonny Kim and Shukaka talked to The Korea Times about slowly topping the popularity and music charts and also their upcoming concert ``SuKi and the City.'' ``A lot of people recognize us now, and our parents now appreciate what we do. The only people who knew us in the past were fans who came to Hongdae frequently but now everything has changed,'' Hercheck said. Super Kidd got its big break by appearing in the hit television show ``Showvival'' last year. The program offered unknown singers and bands the chance to come out from underground clubs and show their musical talent to the public. Teams had to arrange famous songs in their own styles, while the audience later voted for the best musician or band. ``Showvival was like school. Every

Is Radio Dead? Not at SFX Seoul

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia Staff Reporter Is radio dead? It depends on whom you ask. Many may no longer listen to radio since their ears are perennially plugged into their iPod, portable media players or DMB phones. But hop in a taxi and it's a different story, with drivers keeping updated on traffic and news via the radio. According to the organizers of Sound Effects Seoul Radio 2008 (SFX Seoul), radio is definitely still alive and relevant. ``Radio is a presence in our lives. It's kind of like a soundtrack to our lives. Something that you don't know quite what to expect from, something always in the background and usually it is something that you don't pay attention to directly. …That's something similar to the way sound art is. Sound art is not an artwork that you can focus on. It is always affected by other sounds. There are a lot of parallels to that with radio. Radio is a medium for presenting sound art,'' Baruch Gottlieb, director and co-founder of SFX Seoul, told The Korea Times. Sound art, which uses sound as a medium, has been gaining ground among young Korean
