The Hongik University area, or Hongdae, is a cultural haven full of trendy cafes, clubs, people and shops. The group Super Kidd has become a favorite among rock lovers and is working to expand its fan base outside of the hip area.

The five-member group comprised of Hercheck, Zingo, Heavy Porter, Jonny Kim and Shukaka talked to The Korea Times about slowly topping the popularity and music charts and also their upcoming concert ``SuKi and the City.''

``A lot of people recognize us now, and our parents now appreciate what we do. The only people who knew us in the past were fans who came to Hongdae frequently but now everything has changed,'' Hercheck said.

Super Kidd got its big break by appearing in the hit television show ``Showvival'' last year. The program offered unknown singers and bands the chance to come out from underground clubs and show their musical talent to the public.

Teams had to arrange famous songs in their own styles, while the audience later voted for the best musician or band.

``Showvival was like school. Every week, we were given homework and judged by the audience. The experience was helpful and we learned so much,'' Hercheck said.

Performing in the Hongdae indie band scene made Super Kidd think about the negative views of their favorite concert venue, but simultaneously helped them realize the importance of persistence: the more they performed with passion, the more fans started to appreciate them.

``So many different cultures and talented bands are in Hongdae. Many people think the area is dark, dangerous and just loud, but this is not true and it's sad that many think this way,'' Hercheck said.

As diversity and being different started to grow on fans and musicians, however, the stereotype started to change.

``A lot of dramas use indie music for their original soundtracks instead of Japanese fusion jazz numbers. A lot of programs also give these unknown bands a chance to shine on stage. Many people still think that the music and bands performing here are just for hardcore fans, but things are changing. Still there is a long way to go,'' he added.

Super Kidd is known for heating up the stage with its powerful songs and energetic dance moves, making them a draw at numerous rock concerts and university festivals. In their upcoming concert, the group will not only perform hits from their two albums, but also put on a musical.

Despite powerful performances, Super Kidd is also criticized as being loud and noisy. Members have something to say to those who think this way.

``You just have to watch us perform. Just come and enjoy the show, and if you still don't like us, then that's fine. Come and rock with us - we might change your mind,'' Zingo said.

``SuKi in the City'' will be held at the Apgujeong Ye Hall Aug. 30. For more information, click https://ticket.interpark.com or call (02) 3485-8700.
