Will Homeplus liquidation decision be postponed again?

Homeplus has submitted an amended rehabilitation plan just three days before a court deadline, but its failure to secure a crucial 200 billion won ($129 million) capital injection is increasing uncertainty over whether the troubled retailer will face liquidation, industry sources said Wednesday. The Seoul Bankruptcy Court will now assess the feasibility of the revised proposal to determine whether to continue with rescue proceedings or dissolve the company. Although the current deadline expires this Friday, expectations are rising that the court will defer the date once more to review the new submission. The country’s second-largest retail chain, controlled by private equity firm MBK Partners, filed for corporate rehabilitation on March 4 last year after struggling with financial difficulties and facing credit rating downgrades. The original deadline for court approval of its rehabilitation plan was March 4 this year, but the court first extended it to May 4 before granting an additional extension until this Friday. Hitejinro to raise beer prices on high costs

Hitejinro, Korea's leading beverage company, said Tuesday it will raise the prices of its flagship beer products later this month to reflect higher raw material costs. Hitejinro will increase the retail prices of its mainstay Hite, Terra and Kelly beers by an average of 2.7 percent starting May 28, the company said in a press release. "The price hike is inevitable as a weaker won has driven up raw material, logistics and manufacturing costs," the release said. The company last raised product prices in November 2023. However, 500-milliliter canned beers and low-malt FiLite products will not be subject to the planned price hike, in an effort to ease the financial burden on consumers.

SKT uncertain about financial impact of data breach

SK Telecom is expected to face fallout from a major consumer data breach in the coming quarter, with the company saying it remains uncertain about the incident's total financial impact. During its earnings call, Monday, the telecom operator said it is “difficult to quantify the financial impact of the data breach at this point,” adding that it is establishing financial plans based on the hypothesis that up to 24 million of its customers may need to replace their universal subscriber identity module (USIM) cards. SK Telecom announced on April 22 that it detected a malware attack on April 18 and found signs of a large-scale leak of customers’ USIM data. Since then the telecom has been engaging in damage control, offering free USIM replacements for all 25 million customers since April 28 and suspending all new subscriptions from May 5, following a government guidance. “There could be negative impacts in terms of sales due to the suspension of new subscriptions and customers’ switching of mobile carriers, but the extent will remain highly variable depending on future subscriber tr

How far will Korean companies go to attract tech experts?

There is no shortage of tech workers out there, but the ones who can jump straight into real-world projects and make impacts are rare. That’s why Korean companies are offering big perks to attract such high-level professionals. One notable example came recently from Viva Republica, operator of the financial app Toss. In a hiring campaign that opened through Sunday, Toss vowed to offer 1 million won ($713.07) in cash to all candidates who complete a first-round technical interview. The event focuses on recruiting skilled server developers and machine learning engineers with expertise in advertising and commerce. Viva Republica founder and CEO Lee Seung-gun wrote on LinkedIn that the offer was intended to "make the process more accessible" as Toss aims to recruit over 1,000 new team members. Competition for artificial intelligence (AI) experts among Korean startups is intensifying. While more job seekers are showing interest in the field, the supply of professionals with the expertise to deliver immediate, real-world impact remains limited. Industry officials explain that tasks like simp

Will Starbucks overcome Mega Coffee by opening stores until 10 pm?

SCK Company, a Shinsegae Group subsidiary operating Starbucks coffee shops in Korea, has announced plans to keep at least 80 percent of its roughly 2,000 stores open until 10 p.m. in a return to prepandemic hours. The nation's leading coffeehouse chain made the decision amid intensifying competition with fast-growing budget coffee shop brands. Prior to this latest measure, SCK had also introduced discount promotions for customers ordering decaffeinated beverages in the late afternoon and for those making purchases twice a day. "We have decided to extend operating hours and launch related promotional events to fulfill our responsibility of providing spaces where customers can stay comfortably anytime," an SCK official said. While the company described the change as a "normalization" of hours, many see it as a direct response to the aggressive expansion of smaller rivals. According to the Financial Supervisory Service, SCK posted sales of 3.1 trillion won ($2.2 billion) and an operating profit of 190.8 billion won last year, the highest among Korean coffee shop operators. Ban on Nvidia graphics card exports to China adds concerns for Samsung

Nvidia’s reported halt of flagship GeForce graphics card exports to China is raising concerns about the profitability of Samsung Electronics’ memory business, adding to fears of a slowdown amid the ongoing trade war between Washington and Beijing. U.S. tech outlet Tom’s Hardware recently reported that Nvidia has effectively confirmed its RTX 5090D GPUs cannot be ordered in Q2, with all existing and pending orders temporarily canceled. The RTX 5090D is a China-specific variant of Nvidia’s flagship GPU. Nvidia has not commented, but multiple tech media reports suggest the 5090D still violates new U.S. restrictions, as its GB202 Blackwell chip remains too powerful despite the downgrade. The ban has sparked concerns about ripple effects on Samsung Electronics, which supplies Graphics DDR7 (GDDR7) memory chips for the RTX 50 series. Samsung is the primary memory supplier for the RTX 50 series, although Nvidia also sources chips from SK hynix and Micron. Nvidia confirmed in January that the initial batch of RTX 50 series cards would exclusively use Samsung’s GDDR7 memory chips. In Mar

LG Innotek partners with Boston Dynamics to develop robot components

LG Innotek is joining hands with global robotics leader Boston Dynamics to develop components for robots. The electronics component affiliate of LG Group announced Monday that the two firms have signed an agreement to jointly develop an automated vision-sensing system that acts as the eyes of robots. “By collaborating with Boston Dynamics, a world leader in robotics, LG Innotek will gain an advantage in the robotics components market," LG Innotek CEO Moon Hyuk-soo said. “We will continue to introduce core components for robots that lead the robotics era and create differentiated customer value.” LG Innotek will develop a vision-sensing module and install it in Boston Dynamics’ next-generation version of a humanoid robot, Atlas. Boston Dynamics will develop software that effectively processes visual data collected from the vision-sensing module. A vision sensing system integrates various sensing components, such as red, green and blue cameras and three-dimension sensing modules, into a single module. The components interact and synthesize information to allow robots to accurately r
