Weak won, K-beauty fuel Chinese shopping trips, spending in Korea

When Chelsea Wang travelled to Seoul with two friends in late April, they barely visited any of the city's palaces or tourist attractions. Instead, their three-and-a-half-day itinerary revolved around duty-free shopping, beauty treatments, hair salons and cosmetics stores. Wang arrived with a shopping list of her own: a backpack she estimated would cost at least 500 yuan ($70) less than in China, and a bottle of perfume at a similar discount. One of her friends, Wu, a 28-year-old white-collar worker from China who was preparing for marriage, had an even bigger purchase planned. After comparing prices, she bought a Chaumet wedding ring at Lotte Duty Free in Seoul's Myeong-dong neighborhood for about 37,000 yuan after discounts, tax refunds and favourable exchange rates were figured in — roughly 11,000 yuan less than she would have paid in China. "It was really quite a good deal," Wu said. Their purchases came as the Korean won has remained weak against major currencies over the past year. One yuan was worth an average of about 226 won in June, compared with around 209 won in January, acc

Hybe to establish India unit in second half

South Korean K-pop giant Hybe said Monday it will establish a new subsidiary in India in the second half of this year as part of its ongoing effort to broaden the global reach of K-pop. Hybe has previously expanded into the United States, South America, Japan and China. "With the aim of launching (the Indian unit) in September or October, we're currently conducting local market research and handling the necessary procedures to establish the corporate entity," said the company behind BTS, Seventeen and other global acts in a statement. The move is a key element of Chairman Bang Si-hyuk's "multi-home, multi-genre" strategy, which seeks to apply the core principles of the K-pop business model to diverse music markets by adapting to local cultures and consumer preferences, according to the company. Bang is directly supervising the strategy, which he sees as critical to ensuring the long-term viability of K-pop in an increasingly competitive global music industry. India, with a population of over 1.4 billion, represents one of the world's largest and most dynamic music markets.

Industrial output, facility investment lose ground in May; retail sales unchanged

Korea's industrial production and facility investment declined in May from the previous month, while retail sales remained flat, data showed Monday. Industrial production fell 1.1 percent month-on-month in May, continuing its downward trend for a second month, according to the data compiled by Statistics Korea. Facility investment dropped 4.7 percent from the previous month, marking three months of decline. Meanwhile, retail sales, a gauge of private spending, remained unchanged from a month earlier in May. All three major economic indicators had recorded simultaneous declines in April, underscoring the fragility of the country's recent economic momentum. The drop in industrial output was largely driven by a 2.9 percent on-month contraction in the mining and manufacturing sector, considered the backbone of the economy. Within manufacturing, the production of basic metals rose 1.5 percent on-month. However, the modest increase was offset by sharp declines in pharmaceuticals and fabricated metal products, which dropped 10.4 percent and 6.9 percent, respectively. On a yearly basis, overall indu

Corporate direct financing dips in May on fall in debt sales

Corporate direct financing in South Korea dropped sharply in May as companies curtailed debt sales, offsetting a sharp rise in stock offerings, data showed Monday. Local companies raised a combined 21.32 trillion won ($15.73 billion) last month by selling stocks and bonds, down 9.48 trillion won, or 30.8 percent, from the previous month, according to the data from the Financial Supervisory Service. Stock sales spiked to 1.82 trillion won last month from the previous month's 373 billion won, while share sales via initial public offerings rose 53.4 percent on-month to 139 billion won last month. Corporate bond sales, however, sank 36 percent, or 10.92 trillion won, month-on-month to 19.5 trillion won. The value of outstanding corporate bonds stood at 714.45 trillion won as of end-May, up 755 billion won, or 0.1 percent from a month earlier, the data showed.

SK Telecom’s retail partner compensation plan stirs controversy

SK Telecom is facing growing controversy over its proposed compensation plan to offset retail store losses following a recent data breach, as the amount it set falls short of retail partners’ expectations. According to retail stores on Sunday, the telecom operator sent notification of its plan to compensate sales partners for the almost two month period when they were not allowed to enroll new users. Following the massive data breach of its users’ universal subscriber identity modules (USIM) in April, the company followed government instructions to suspend accepting new subscriptions until completing USIM card replacements for its existing users. During the suspension, the retail stores have been unable to carry out operations other than USIM replacements and related inquiries. Under the plan, SK Telecom will provide compensation of 150,000 won ($110) per new subscriber case. The company will calculate the number of affected cases for each store based on the store’s average number of new sign-ups between April last year and March this year. In addition to new subscriptions, SK Telec

HD Hyundai Electric signs MOU to supply data center power equipment to Norwegian firm

HD Hyundai Electric, a Korean electric equipment manufacturer, said Sunday it has signed an initial agreement with a Norwegian company to supply power equipment for data centers. The company signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Bulk Infrastructure, a Norwegian data and telecommunications infrastructure firm, to provide electric power transformers and high-voltage circuit breakers for the company's data centers, it said in a press release. Under the agreement, the two companies will also cooperate in seeking orders for high-voltage circuit breakers in the European electric machinery market, the company said. Founded in 2006, Bulk Infrastructure currently operates five data centers in Norway and Denmark. Last year, HD Hyundai Electric signed a separate deal to supply ultra-high-voltage transformers to Bulk Infrastructure's data center in Vennesla, Norway. Europe ranked as one of the world's top three regions for data center electricity consumption in 2024, alongside the United States and China, according to a report released by the International Energy Agency (IEA). The Korea Water Cluster, a government-led hub supporting R&D and commercialization in the water sector, announced Friday that it has partnered with LG Electronics and the Korea Water Forum — Korea’s leading international nonprofit organization in the water sector — to launch a pilot project focused on developing and validating low-carbon mineral detergent technology. The initiative centers on the mechanism of mineral detergent washing, which leverages soluble glass and other mineral-based ingredients to achieve low-temperature washing performance, significantly reducing energy consumption, water usage and reliance on commercial chemical detergents. The project aims to deliver a synergetic effect by combining cutting-edge technology with sustainable practices to promote broader societal adoption of eco-conscious cleaning methods. The project offers specialized performance, enabling effective cleaning with low damage to laundry while also prioritizing user safety. MBK, Young Poong welcome court ruling against Korea Zinc's share issuance to Hyundai Motor affiliate

A Seoul court ruled that Korea Zinc's issuance of new shares through a third-party allotment to HMG Global, an affiliate of Hyundai Motor Group, is invalid as it violated the firm's articles of incorporation, according to company and industry officials Sunday. The MBK Partners-Young Poong alliance, Korea Zinc's largest shareholder and a long-time rival in the ongoing management rights dispute, welcomed the court's decision, while the world's largest zinc smelter said it plans to file an appeal. With Korea Zinc stating its intention to appeal, the newly issued shares will remain valid until courts reach a final decision, meaning for now there will be no major shift in the dynamics of the ownership dispute. On Friday, the Seoul Central District Court ruled in favor of Young Poong in its lawsuit against the zinc smelting firm over the validity of the share issuance. The court found that the issuance violated the rights of existing shareholders, invalidating approximately 1 million common shares issued on Sept. 13, 2023. The MBK-Young Poong alliance called the ruling "a reaffirmation of the l

Samyang Foods' market cap exceeds $7.3 bil. amid Buldak boom

The market capitalization of Samyang Foods, known for its globally popular Buldak spicy ramyeon, has exceeded 10 trillion won ($7.3 billion) for the first time, helped by robust sales of the Buldak series, the main bourse said Sunday. On Friday, the company ranked 54th in market capitalization, reaching 10.049 trillion won based on a closing price of 1,334,000 won per share, according to the Korea Exchange (KRX). The company recently expanded one of its three domestic plants to meet rising global demand for its products. In addition to its domestic facilities, Samyang plans to begin construction of its first overseas plant in China next month. The company currently operates in China, Japan, Indonesia, the Netherlands and the U.S. Last year, Samyang's sales surged 45 percent on-year to 1.73 trillion won due to strong demand for its Buldak ramyeon series in the U.S. and
