Weak won, K-beauty fuel Chinese shopping trips, spending in Korea

When Chelsea Wang travelled to Seoul with two friends in late April, they barely visited any of the city's palaces or tourist attractions. Instead, their three-and-a-half-day itinerary revolved around duty-free shopping, beauty treatments, hair salons and cosmetics stores. Wang arrived with a shopping list of her own: a backpack she estimated would cost at least 500 yuan ($70) less than in China, and a bottle of perfume at a similar discount. One of her friends, Wu, a 28-year-old white-collar worker from China who was preparing for marriage, had an even bigger purchase planned. After comparing prices, she bought a Chaumet wedding ring at Lotte Duty Free in Seoul's Myeong-dong neighborhood for about 37,000 yuan after discounts, tax refunds and favourable exchange rates were figured in — roughly 11,000 yuan less than she would have paid in China. "It was really quite a good deal," Wu said. Their purchases came as the Korean won has remained weak against major currencies over the past year. One yuan was worth an average of about 226 won in June, compared with around 209 won in January, acc

LG exploring business opportunities in space industry: KASA

Korea's LG Group is considering entering the space industry and exploring potential business opportunities in the field, the Korea Aerospace Administration (KASA) said Friday after holding talks with the conglomerate. KASA Administrator Yoon Young-bin met with LG officials at the group's research and development (R&D) complex in Seoul earlier in the day to discuss strategies for expanding the private sector's role in Korea's aerospace industry. At the meeting, LG outlined its ongoing review of space-related technologies and shared updates on its support for domestic space startups, according to KASA. The group presented a case study involving a successful lunar rover mobility test conducted in partnership with local startup Unmanned Exploration Laboratory, and unveiled a long-term goal of enabling lunar landing by 2032. LG Energy Solution, the group's battery manufacturing unit, was previously selected by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 2016 to supply lithium-ion batteries for astronaut spacesuits used in deep space exploration. Hyundai Motor Group named among Time's 100 most influential companies of 2025

Korea's Hyundai Motor Group has been named one of Time magazine's 100 most influential companies of 2025. It was listed in the Leaders category for the Time 100 Companies list released Thursday (U.S. time), which also included Duolingo, LinkedIn, Penguins Random House, Prada Group and Anthropic. Hyundai is the only Korean company included in this year's list, and it marks the group's first appearance on the ranking since its affiliate Kia made the list in 2023. To select 100 companies with the criteria of impact, innovation, ambition and success, editors of the U.S. magazine request suggestions and applications from across sectors, survey its contributors and correspondents around the world and seek advice from outside experts. Calling the company an "automotive dark horse," Time highlighted Hyundai's rapid growth fueled by aggressive investment in eco-friendly vehicles and timely response to consumer preferences. "Hyundai continues to prove that its rise to the top ranks of global automakers — it was the third-largest automaker in 2024 — was no fluke," the magazine wrote. "Once saddl

Are Korea's shipbuilders nearing peak-out?

Korea's shipbuilding industry, which has enjoyed a strong stock market rally amid a rare supercycle, now faces growing concerns among investors about an imminent peak-out — a slowdown after reaching its peak value, according to securities analysts, Thursday. However, despite falling global ship orders and U.S. President Donald Trump's aggressive tariff policies, the industry's upward momentum is expected to continue for the time being, they said, citing solid fundamentals and resilient market indicators. Samsung Securities analyst Han Young-soo said that, while concerns persist over valuation pressures and a possible peak-out, the shipbuilding industry remains in a robust growth phase. "With the overall machinery sector on the rise this year, there is no reason for shipbuilding stocks to be undervalued compared to their peers," Han said. Han pointed out that HD Hyundai Heavy Industries warrants a valuation premium, especially given the upward momentum in machinery sector valuations. He also highlighted the shipbuilder's potential benefits from expanding into the overseas maritime defens

Russia says against Iran suspending IAEA cooperation

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Thursday spoke out against Moscow's key ally Iran suspending cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), after Iranian lawmakers voted in favour of halting work with the UN nuclear agency. "We are interested in continuing cooperation between Iran and the IAEA, so that everybody respects Iran's repeated statements that Iran does not have and will not have plans to develop a nuclear weapon," Lavrov said at a press conference in Moscow.

Korea's top court to deliver final verdict on Samsung chairman on July 17

The Supreme Court is set to deliver the final verdict on Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong next month, as he was acquitted in both the first and second trials on charges related to a 2015 merger case, sources said Thursday. The ruling, scheduled for July 17, comes four years and 10 months after Lee was first brought to trial and about five months after the appellate court upheld his acquittal. Lee was indicted in September 2020 on charges of unfair trading, stock price manipulation and accounting fraud during the 2015 merger of two Samsung affiliates, Cheil Industries and Samsung C&T. In February 2024, a lower court found him not guilty on all 19 charges, and the appellate court affirmed the ruling earlier this year. Prosecutors appealed to the Supreme Court, arguing that the merger and other alleged irregularities were intended to help Lee solidify control of Korea's largest conglomerate at minimal cost.

Hanwha Aerospace inks $459.3 mil. deal to supply engines for KF-21 fighter jets

Hanwha Aerospace said Thursday it has signed a 623.2 billion-won ($459.3 million) follow-up contract with the state defense procurement agency to supply engines for Korea's next-generation KF-21 fighter jets. The agreement with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) builds on a previous engine supply deal worth 556.2 billion won signed a year ago, bringing the total contract value to 1.18 trillion won. With the latest contract, Hanwha Aerospace will deliver 80 units of F414 engines for the first mass-produced batch of KF-21 jets by December 2028. The deal also includes logistics support, such as maintenance parts, technical manuals and on-site technical assistance. Hanwha Aerospace has long been involved in the Korean military's aviation projects, having produced more than 10,000 engines for Korea's fighter jets, including the KF-5, KF-16 and F-15K, since 1979. To bolster its high-tech engine business, the company has invested 40 billion won to build a smart factory dedicated to jet engine production. "With our advanced aviation engine technology, we will ensure timely deli

SK On reaffirms ongoing Ferrari EV partnership

SK On said Thursday its partnership with Ferrari remains firmly on track, after Reuters reported last week that the Italian luxury carmaker may delay the 2026 launch of its second fully electric vehicle (EV) until at least 2028. “We have not seen any indication of that,” an SK On official said. “Our collaboration with Ferrari remains unchanged and is proceeding as scheduled.” Citing sources familiar with the matter, Reuters reported June 17 that Ferrari decided to slow its electrification due to weaker-than-expected demand for high-end EVs. Amid Ferrari’s silence on the issue, concerns have also grown for SK On, as the Korean battery maker has been instrumental in supporting the Italian firm’s electrification from the start. Since 2019, SK On has provided Ferrari with battery cells to power its first plug-in hybrid supercar, the SF90 Stradale, and its open-top variant, the SF90 Spider. The Korean firm’s batteries were also used for the 296 GTB and 296 GTS plug-in hybrid EVs, which were launched in 2021 and 2022, respectively. SK On’s batteries are believed to power Ferrari

Mirae Asset tops W70 tril. mark in TIGER ETFs

Mirae Asset Global Investments said Thursday that its TIGER exchange-traded funds (ETFs) topped 70 trillion won ($51.54 billion) in net assets both at home and abroad. The asset management arm of Mirae Asset Financial Group said the net assets reached 70.07 trillion won for all 213 ETFs sold under the TIGER brand worldwide. In particular, the yearly growth rate of Mirae Asset Global Investments averaged 35.1 percent over the past 10 years, which was nearly double the growth rate of global peers, averaging 18.3 percent growth. In Korea, TIGER ETFs account for about 43 percent of the 62 trillion won of assets under management of entirely domestically traded ETFs. The 43 percent marks the largest market share among local asset managers. “We will continue to pay back customers' support for TIGER ETFs by developing innovative products and faithfully serving our role as a long-term investment partner a

MAN Truck & Bus Korea will aggressively expand its service network, as part of its core growth strategy in Korea's competitive commercial vehicle market, the head of the company said Thursday. The plan stands at the top of the firm’s MAN CORE 360 strategy — the latest corporate growth vision to drive its service-side innovation. The truck and bus manufacturer opened its third headquarter-controlled service center in the southeastern city of Busan on Wednesday, expanding the total number of its own and partnered repair and maintenance facilities to 22 across the nation. Three of them, including the one in Busan, are directly controlled by the local subsidiary of the European commercial vehicle maker. MAN Truck & Bus is also scheduled to open another major service facility in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province in the fourth quarter of 2025. LG Uplus to launch AI-driven anti-phishing technology

LG Uplus is introducing a new artificial intelligence (AI)-powered security feature for its ixi-O AI agent, in response to the growing number of cases of voice phishing and fraud crimes using AI-driven deepfake technologies. According to the company, the new anti-deepvoice technology will be integrated into ixi-O on Monday. The technology was unveiled at this year’s MWC tech trade show in March. The new technology, which the company is commercializing for the first time globally as an on-device AI, detects voices made or manipulated by AI during a call and alerts the user within five seconds. It aims to help identify and prevent voice phishing crimes using AI-generated voices to impersonate acquaintances or stage fake hostage situations to extort money. “AI-generated voices may not be noticeable to our ear, but they often contain abnormal high-frequency noise or unnatural variations in pronunciations that differ from real humans. By using AI, we are able to detect these subtle differences that people typically can’t perceive,” Lee Seok-young, director of mobile services at LG Up
