Weak won, K-beauty fuel Chinese shopping trips, spending in Korea

When Chelsea Wang travelled to Seoul with two friends in late April, they barely visited any of the city's palaces or tourist attractions. Instead, their three-and-a-half-day itinerary revolved around duty-free shopping, beauty treatments, hair salons and cosmetics stores. Wang arrived with a shopping list of her own: a backpack she estimated would cost at least 500 yuan ($70) less than in China, and a bottle of perfume at a similar discount. One of her friends, Wu, a 28-year-old white-collar worker from China who was preparing for marriage, had an even bigger purchase planned. After comparing prices, she bought a Chaumet wedding ring at Lotte Duty Free in Seoul's Myeong-dong neighborhood for about 37,000 yuan after discounts, tax refunds and favourable exchange rates were figured in — roughly 11,000 yuan less than she would have paid in China. "It was really quite a good deal," Wu said. Their purchases came as the Korean won has remained weak against major currencies over the past year. One yuan was worth an average of about 226 won in June, compared with around 209 won in January, acc

Pricing to test success of Samsung's Galaxy Z 7 series

Samsung Electronics will unveil its latest foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 on July 9 during a Galaxy Unpacked event in Brooklyn, New York. With the phones expected to feature upgraded specs with thinner and lighter profiles compared to their predecessors, the pricing of Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z 7 series will be a decisive factor in their commercial success. As Samsung’s profitability has increasingly depended on its smartphone business amid a slowdown in the semiconductor sector, the performance of the new Galaxy Z series is more critical than ever. According to Samsung, the Fold 7 and Flip 7 will be unveiled at the event in Brooklyn at 10 a.m. (local time). The event will be livestreamed on a number of Samsung websites and its official YouTube channel. Many of the phones’ specifications have already been leaked. Ahn held a meeting with visiting Lithuanian Minister of Economy and Innovation Lukas Savickas in Seoul, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. In the meeting, Ahn said the two countries can bolster collaboration in advanced industries, highlighting Lithuania's top-notch capabilities in laser technologies and Korea's competitive edge in the semiconductor and display industries, where laser technology is frequently used for manufacturing. Savickas said Lithuania can serve as a foothold for Korean companies operating in Europe, noting the country is pushing to lower its corporate tax rate and provide various business support measures, according to the ministry. How will new household loan restrictions affect bank stocks?

The government's announcement of its strongest-ever measures to tighten regulations on household lending is prompting expectations that the recent rally in bank stocks may lose momentum, according to securities analysts Monday. The outlook comes as tighter lending rules are likely to weigh down on banks' earnings, given that interest income accounts for a large portion of their profits. The Financial Services Commission (FSC), the country's top financial regulator, announced plans Friday to cut total household lending across all financial sectors to half of the initially projected amount, starting in July. The measures set a mortgage loan ceiling of 600 million won ($445,000) for home purchases in the Seoul metropolitan area and designated regulatory zones. Securities firms expect the latest policy measures to reduce the annual growth rate of household loans in the banking sector from the 4 percent range to the 3 percent range, including government-backed loans. The FSC also anticipates that the new regulations will help curb loan growth by around 20 trillion won each year. Nevertheless, a

The International Corporate Governance Network (ICGN) will host a full-day forum in Seoul next spring, encouraged by the new government's efforts to improve governance practices and the resulting enthusiasm from investors. "We think it is a very exciting time for corporate governance here in Korea," ICGN CEO Jen Sisson told The Korea Times in a recent written interview. "It is great to see the energy and enthusiasm from standard setters, the Korea Exchange, banks, investors and companies — there is a real sense of momentum." Established in 1995, the ICGN influences policymaking in countries and international organizations such as the OECD and the World Bank through governance-related recommendations. Influential investors such as the California Public Employees' Retirement System and Japan's Government Pension Investment Fund are among its members, who collectively manage over $90 trillion in assets. From Korea, the National Pension Service and Align Partners are participating. Sisson visited Korea last week to participate in governance-related conferences and held a series of meetings

New T’way CEO faces call to restore safety, regain customer trust

T’way Air’s newly appointed CEO, Lee Sang-yoon, faces the critical task of restoring the airline’s tainted reputation as a low-cost carrier plagued by safety concerns and frequent flight delays. Under the leadership of former CEO Jeong Hong-gun, T’way achieved robust earnings growth in recent years, driven by his exceptional sales acumen. Jeong, considered one of the nation’s most experienced aviation sales experts, built his sales career at Korean Air and Jin Air before joining T’way. The sales-focused strategy was successful, with the airline reporting outstanding sales growth over the past two years. In 2022, the carrier posted 525.8 billion won ($387.8 million) in sales in 2022, but the figure surged to more than 1.5 trillion won as of last year. However, the airline has faced criticism that its earnings growth came at the cost of proper safety management. In May, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport imposed a fine of 2.6 billion won on T’way Air for failing to comply with aviation regulations related to engine maintenance. According to ministry data, T’
