Samsung Electro-Mechanics bags $294 mil. MLCC supply deal with US Big Tech firm

Samsung Electro-Mechanics will supply multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) for artificial intelligence (AI) servers to a U.S. Big Tech firm, signing a $294 million (454 billion won) contract. The company said in a regulatory filing Tuesday that it has signed a one-year supply deal that will begin on Jan. 1 next year. The company did not identify the customer, but sources said it is a U.S. cloud service provider. The deal accounts for approximately 9 percent of the component division's 2025 revenue of 5.2 trillion won. MLCC is a component that stabilizes power for semiconductors and other electronic devices. As power fluctuations in servers can directly affect performance, MLCCs have become increasingly important in AI server environments. AI server applications require high-performance MLCCs that can withstand the harsh operating conditions created by intensive computing workloads, such as high heat and greater stress for warpage. AI servers contain more than 10 times as many MLCCs as conventional servers. A typical AI graphics processing unit is equipped with more than 20,000 MLCCs, mea

LG Electronics, KT to conduct joint study on secure communication

LG Electronics said Wednesday it has agreed with KT, Korea's No. 2 mobile carrier, to carry out joint research on advanced secure communication technology. The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to conduct in-depth studies on quantum direct communication technology amid the growing need to establish networks with "hyper security" features, it added. Quantum direct communication enables secure data transmission as data transmitted in a quantum state collapses upon detecting any eavesdropping attempts. The technology is anticipated to offer strong data security for AI-powered services applied in homes, smart factories and self-driving vehicles. LG Electronics and KT have been forging closer ties in the telecommunications industry, including joint research and development projects for sixth-generation (6G) networks last year.

Samsung opens HVAC research lab in Japan

Samsung Electronics said Wednesday it has opened a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) research lab in northern Japan to develop heating solutions for extreme weather conditions. The Korean tech giant said it has selected Asahikawa, Hokkaido, as the location, as the region's temperature falls to minus 20 C during winter, making it suitable to carry out tests on defrost and heat pump systems. "Through the HVAC test lab, the company plans to carry out technology research and tests to release a more effective defrosting system," the company said. Samsung Electronics, meanwhile, has been forging ties with European partners, including KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden, to meet the growing demand for heat pumps from households. "The company will proactively expand its presence in the global HVAC market and secure a new growth engine," said Moon Jong-seung, who heads Samsung's digital appliances division.

SK hynix's memory chips sold out through next year upon strong demand

SK hynix set a new quarterly earnings record for the third quarter, powered by strong artificial intelligence (AI) chip sales and higher memory prices. The chipmaker said that not only AI-specific high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips but also other DRAM chips and NAND flash memory chips are “virtually sold out” through next year, as new AI-driven markets such as autonomous driving and robotics continue to emerge. Describing the current boom as a “super cycle,” the company added that the limited room for production expansion will likely prolong the uptrend. SK hynix said Wednesday during its earnings call that its operating profit stood at 11.38 trillion won ($7.93 billion) for the July-September period and its sales reached 24.45 trillion won. Sales jumped 39 percent from 17.57 trillion won a year earlier, while operating profit surged 62 percent from 7.03 trillion won. Operating margin soared to 47 percent. This marks a new quarterly earnings record for the chipmaker, driven by rising prices of DRAM and NAND flash memory and increased shipments of high-performance products for AI se

Interview Navifra seeks autonomous mobile robot market leadership with precision technology

As the global industrial robot market rapidly expands in the wake of the advances in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, manufacturers are increasingly seeking ways to deploy large numbers of robots on factory floors while minimizing operational errors in repetitive tasks. One company addressing this challenge is Navifra, a Korean software developer for autonomous mobile robots (AMRs). Founded in 2022, the startup offers solutions for robots to navigate manufacturing sites while staying accurate within 5 millimeters, making them a popular choice for production line logistics for major manufacturers. “When it comes to automation, you expect machines to perform the same task within a fixed margin of error, even if they repeat it 10 million times,” Navifra CEO Park Joong-tae said in an interview with The Korea Times. “It’s the same with mobility — it must repeat the same motion over and over. Our solution ensures that whether you operate 100 or 1,000 robots, each one stops within a 5-millimeter margin, enhancing both stability and precision.” Navifra’s key solutions are

InterviewSharp Aviation K positions itself as reliable one-stop aviation service partner

Sharp Aviation K, the nation’s largest independent aviation service firm, will solidify its identity as the most reliable one-stop aviation service partner to its global clients, its CEO Paik Soon-suk said during a recent interview. The company has stable revenue structures in its aviation service business available at eight airports across the nation. After Korean Air completed its legal filings to acquire Asiana Airlines in December 2024, Sharp Aviation K has risen to become the nation’s second-largest airport ground handling service provider. The company, however, maintains a leading position as an “independent” firm dedicated to offering its services without any management link with other airlines. “For the past six decades, we have tried to build a strong stepping stone to offer stable and diverse aviation services, including not just ground handling, but also aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) to local low-cost carriers (LCCs) and overseas airlines,” Paik told The Korea Times during an interview at its headquarters in Seoul on Oct. 20. Late LG chairman remembered as model leader

JINJU, South Gyeongsang Province — Late LG Honorary Chairman Koo Cha-kyung was highlighted as a role model for Korean entrepreneurs at an international forum on entrepreneurship in Jinju on Tuesday, which reviewed his business strategies and achievements. The sixth session of the two-day 2025 Jinju International Forum on Entrepreneurship coincided with the 100th anniversary of Koo’s birth. The forum noted that, thanks to Koo and the founders of other major Korean conglomerates, including Samsung, GS and Hyosung, Jinju has become recognized as the birthplace of some of the country’s largest enterprises with global reach. Speakers at the session emphasized how Koo strengthened LG by setting ambitious goals unprecedented in Korea during the 1970s–90s. Jung Yeon-sung, chair of the Awards Selection Committee of the Korean Academy Society of Business Administration (KASBA), said Koo was both visionary and decisive in restructuring the conglomerate to align with global trends of the time. “Koo’s entrepreneurship was a balanced mixture of his personal values (opportunity, challenge a
