Samsung opens HVAC research lab in Japan

Samsung Electronics said Wednesday it has opened a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) research lab in northern Japan to develop heating solutions for extreme weather conditions.

The Korean tech giant said it has selected Asahikawa, Hokkaido, as the location, as the region's temperature falls to minus 20 C during winter, making it suitable to carry out tests on defrost and heat pump systems.

"Through the HVAC test lab, the company plans to carry out technology research and tests to release a more effective defrosting system," the company said.

Samsung Electronics, meanwhile, has been forging ties with European partners, including KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden, to meet the growing demand for heat pumps from households.

"The company will proactively expand its presence in the global HVAC market and secure a new growth engine," said Moon Jong-seung, who heads Samsung's digital appliances division.
