SK hynix keeps top spot in DRAM sector in Q3

SK hynix stood as the leading player in the global dynamic random access memory (DRAM) market in the third quarter amid the boom in the artificial intelligence (AI) industry, data showed Wednesday. According to industry tracker Counterpoint Research, SK hynix accounted for 35 percent of the global DRAM market in terms of sales with $13.7 billion, followed by Samsung Electronics with 34 percent. SK hynix outperformed Samsung Electronics in the DRAM sector for the first time in the first quarter of 2025, on the back of robust shipments of high bandwidth memory (HBM), considered a key component for AI infrastructure. The gap between SK hynix and Samsung Electronics, however, narrowed to just 1 percentage point in the third quarter, compared with 6 percentage points in the previous quarter. "SK hynix maintains solid leadership in the HBM sector with a market share of 58 percent and is expected to post sound performance in the fourth quarter as well amid growing demand for AI memory chips," the researcher said.

The executives are visiting Korea to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit. Among their pledges, AWS will invest more than $5 billion by 2031 to establish new AI data centers in Incheon and Gyeonggi Province, following its $4 billion investment in June to build an AI data center in Ulsan — the largest greenfield investment in Korea’s history. Naver CEO highlights Korea's AI policy push at APEC CEO Summit

Naver Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Choi Soo-yeon on Wednesday highlighted the Korean government's push to build an "AI expressway," describing it as a key policy initiative to transform the country into a global artificial intelligence (AI) powerhouse. Speaking at a session of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit, Choi said the Korean government is taking concrete steps to foster AI infrastructure, including expanding tax incentives for AI data centers, simplifying administrative procedures and easing location regulations. "I understand that the Korean government is also building an AI expressway. It follows the path of the information superhighway that made Korea a global IT powerhouse back in the 2000s," Choi said at the event in Gyeongju, the host city of this year's APEC gathering. She explained that the government is expanding tax incentives for AI data centers and also simplifying administrative procedures and easing location regulations involving the sector. Choi said such measures are providing "momentum and energy" to the industry, noting that special legisla

US most favored by Korean biz groups for production base since launch of 1st Trump administration

Korean business groups have moved their overseas production bases from China to the United States over the past eight years since the launch of U.S. President Donald Trump's first administration, a corporate tracker said Wednesday. The combined assets of the top 10 business groups' overseas subsidiaries more than doubled to 490.71 trillion won ($342.4 billion) at the end of 2024 from 209.16 trillion won at the end of 2016, according to data compiled by CEO Score. The surge was largely due to the Trump administration's protectionist stance and aggressive policies to attract manufacturing investment, which helped the U.S. overtake China and Vietnam as the main production hub for Korean companies, the data showed. The assets of Korean production subsidiaries in the U.S. jumped more than sevenfold from 21.7 trillion won to 157.73 trillion won during the same period, while assets in China rose 27 percent from 91.76 trillion won to 116.61 trillion won. As of last year, China ranked second as a destination for Korean manufacturing investment, followed by Vietnam. Samsung Group had the largest as

Mirae Asset accuses Brookfield of unreturned IFC deposit despite arbitration ruling

Mirae Asset Global Investments accused Brookfield, a Canadian multinational investment firm, Wednesday, of failing to comply with an international arbitration ruling in its favor over a botched property deal in Seoul’s financial district of Yeouido. The asset management arm of Mirae Asset Financial Group said it is preparing further legal action against Brookfield, claiming the firm has not returned a 200 billion won ($139.5 million) deposit related to the deal, along with accrued interest and arbitration-related costs. “An international arbitration award is a legally binding and final judgment recognized by the international community,” the Korean firm said in a statement. “Nevertheless, Brookfield has refused to comply and continues to take an abnormal stance that seriously undermines trust and fair trading order in the global investment market." The statement came a day after the Tuesday deadline for Brookfield to pay back the 200 billion won deposit, with interest due and arbitration-related costs, as ordered by the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) in its re
