GM Korea’s union on verge of strike as carmaker bears nearly all tariff burden

GM Korea’s labor union is on the verge of a strike after wage negotiations reached an impasse, with tensions exacerbated by the automaker’s decision to shoulder the vast majority of the cost from U.S. auto tariffs that have weighed heavily on its earnings last year. The carmaker’s labor union has moved closer to the labor action, after an overwhelming majority of members voted in favor of a strike. The status quo is feared to worsen the carmaker’s already deteriorating financial performance amid mounting tariff-related costs. Korean automakers, including GM Korea, face an auto tariff of 15 percent when exporting vehicles to the United States. Some 86.5 percent of GM Korea’s union members favored the walkout last week. The carmaker’s union and management had held nine rounds of wage negotiations, but failed to find a breakthrough. The conflict between the two sides escalated after it turned out that GM Korea did not share its tariff burden with its U.S. headquarters, instead taking on the full burden. The union argued that the tariff-related costs should be shared with headquar

SPC opens 700th global Paris Baguette in London

Food giant SPC’s bakery brand Paris Baguette has opened its 700th overseas store with a new location in London, further expanding the Korean conglomerate’s brand in global markets. The new store is a local franchise rather than directly managed by the company, highlighting both the brand’s local popularity and the conglomerate’s growing franchise partnerships in international consumer markets. Paris Baguette, under SPC subsidiary Paris Croissant, on Friday (local time) opened its fourth store in the U.K., located inside Westfield London, a shopping mall in Shepherd’s Bush, London. The store is the brand’s second local franchise in the country, run by Wayne Stevenson. It is his second Paris Baguette store, following his first at Canary Wharf, London’s financial district, which opened in November last year. “Since my first Paris Baguette opening, it has been an emotional journey for me — an emotion well spent, as it is now a thriving bakery and community hub for many who live and work around the Wharf,” Stevenson said. SPC plans to open the U.K.’s fifth Paris Baguette

Hwayo sets sights on becoming Korea’s national soju brand

YEOJU, Gyeonggi Province — Hwayo, Korea's leading distilled soju company, wants to become the nation's No. 1 premium soju brand, hoping its product will serve as a signature drink at major business meetings around the world. During a press conference celebrating the firm's 22nd anniversary on Monday, Hwayo President Cho Hee-kyung said the authentic Korean product can be popular globally — although the current international market for clear spirits is largely dominated by vodka and gin. “Many high-end restaurants in China offer liquor lists spanning more than 30 pages, yet only a single page is devoted to clear spirits. On that page, 7 out of 10 items are different varieties of Maotai, with prices ranging from 300,000 won ($204) to 8 million won,” Cho said. “One of my Chinese business partners once described Maotai as a ‘love-and-hate’ drink because it is served at every business meeting where a contract is on the table — and you either walk away with a signed deal or watch it fall apart.” She added: “He said Maotai has always been tied to his business ventures. Coupang users concerned about possible voice phishing after data breach

When the news broke that over 33 million Coupang customers’ personal information was leaked, including names, addresses, phone numbers and their recent purchase histories — Kim Joo-young, 40, an office worker in Seoul, checked her phone immediately to change her passwords. “It felt like someone could somehow just take everything from me, including my deposits in bank and brokerage accounts without me knowing,” she said. “I thought voice phishing was something I only hear on the news, but the Coupang incident taught me this is no joke and that it could happen to anyone. And that anyone could very well be me.” On Saturday, a day after the leak was reported, she received a text claiming her “recent parcel could not be delivered.” Normally, she would have ignored it. But when the whole country is talking about leaked addresses and purchases, that message suddenly felt like a threat she couldn’t brush off. “I was extremely careful not to click on the link attached by mistake. In the past, I wouldn’t have thought twice about it, but at that moment, I was gripped by fear t

Samsung to launch Galaxy Z TriFold in Korea Dec. 12

Samsung Electronics will launch its first trifold smartphone, the Galaxy Z TriFold, in Korea next week, in a move to gauge early market response on the company’s new form factor before planned global launches. “The Galaxy Z TriFold embodies Samsung Electronics’ craftmanship and represents a new step forward in foldable smartphones,” Samsung Electronics Korea Sales Head Lim Seong-taek said during a media unveiling in Seoul Tuesday. “Its dual-folding design combines portability with a large-screen experience when fully opened, offering a more versatile and powerful mobile experience across different lifestyles.” The Galaxy Z TriFold features a 6.5-inch cover display when folded into a bar-type form, which expands into a 10-inch screen when fully unfolded. To facilitate the trifold structure, the smartphone maintains a slim profile of 3.9 millimeters when unfolded and 12.9 millimeters when folded. The Z TriFold is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Platform for Galaxy, features an inward-folding structure optimized to protect the display, and alerts users with vibrations a

Safety concerns grow as Tesla’s Full Self-Driving feature launches in Korea

Safety concerns are escalating over Tesla’s launch of the Full Self-Driving (FSD) system here, as drivers are widely expected to rely more and more on the quasi-autonomous driving system despite the lack of institutional safeguards, experts and industry officials said Monday. The U.S. electric vehicle (EV) maker received a Level 2 certification here for the supervised version of the flagship software. The carmaker’s locally distributed Model S and Model X vehicles — both imported from the United States — can now access the service. Under the Level 2 system, drivers have to keep their eyes forward and constantly monitor road conditions, but this is still not enough to ensure safety, according to experts. “Simply put, the Level 2 autonomous driving is just an advanced assistance system, so drivers should not depend excessively on it,” said Kim Pil-soo, a professor of automotive technology at Daelim University College. Tesla launched the supervised version here in order to evade any possible responsibility in case of accidents, according to Kim. “The biggest problem is that cus

President Lee Jae Myung orders punitive measures against Coupang data leak

President Lee Jae Myung on Tuesday ordered a thorough investigation and punitive punishment over Coupang's recent massive customer data leak. “The scale of the damage is massive, involving about 34 million victims, but it is truly shocking that the company failed to detect the breach for five full months after the initial incident,” the president said during a Cabinet meeting at his office in Yongsan District, Seoul. “We must identify the cause of this accident swiftly and hold those responsible strictly accountable. I urge you to mobilize all available resources to prevent secondary crimes arising from the misuse of this leaked information.” Expressing concerns over the recent surge in data leak cases, Lee urged the government to implement harsher penalties and effective countermeasures, referencing international standards to actualize punitive damages. “This is also an opportunity to completely overturn the misguided practices and perceptions that trivialize the protection of personal data — a core asset in the age of AI (artificial intelligence) and digital technology,”

Space agency communicates with 9 of 12 cube satellites deployed by Nuri

Korea's space agency said Tuesday it has successfully established communication with nine of the 12 cube satellites deployed by the country's homegrown rocket Nuri last week. The 200-ton Nuri blasted off from Naro Space Center in the country's southern coastal village of Goheung, South Jeolla Province, on Thursday last week, placing 13 satellites, including the main CAS500-3, into orbit at an altitude of 600 kilometers. The main satellite established communication with Korea's King Sejong Station in Antarctica shortly after deployment. According to the Korea AeroSpace Administration (KASA) and the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), authorities successfully communicated with five cube satellites on the day of the launch. On Friday, they made contact with three additional cube satellites, followed by another on Saturday. KARI plans to continue efforts to reach the remaining three cube satellites. "Cube satellites, which experience repeated failures and successes, stand at the frontline of rapidly advancing space technology," a KASA official said, noting the government will continue e

Arirang 7 multipurpose satellite successfully put into orbit

Arirang 7, Korea's multipurpose satellite, has successfully entered orbit after lifting off from a space center in South America, the country's space agency said Tuesday. Also known as the Korea Multipurpose Satellite 7, the satellite was deployed from the Vega-C rocket 44 minutes after launching from the Guiana Space Centre in French Guiana at 2:21 p.m. Monday (French Guiana time), or 2:21 a.m. Tuesday (Korean time), according to the Korea AeroSpace Administration (KASA). The rocket is operated by France-based Arianespace. The Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), the developer of Arirang 7, confirmed the satellite's status when it made its first contact with Russia's Antarctic ground station at 3:30 a.m. (Korean time). KARI also verified its successful orbital insertion through data from Arianespace. Arirang 7, equipped with an ultra-high-resolution electro-optical camera and an infrared sensor, is expected to provide high-quality imagery for environmental and disaster monitoring, and urban heat island analysis. The satellite is expected to begin transmitting observation data in th
