SMG seeks to change name of Gimpo Airport

By Kim Se-jeong The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) is pushing to change the name of Gimpo International Airport to Seoul International Airport in an effort to improve its global reputation, officials said Monday.But the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation is opposing the idea, saying a name change would create confusion.SMG sent a formal request to the ministry on Dec. 17, asking for permission to change the name. This was the second time the city has made such a request. The first was submitted in 2004, but the ministry refused, saying changing an airport’s name was “unprecedented.”SMG argues that the current name was not helping the airport’s business.“Gimpo is an old name from the 1930s. But, now, things have changed a lot. The airport is now part of Seoul, and keeping the name won’t help the airport expand its business,” said an official.Gimpo International Airport was opened in 1939. Work on N-reactor halted after three die in gas leak

By Kim Se-jeong The Ministry of Employment and Labor has ordered the state-run Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Corp. (KHNP) to halt work at a nuclear reactor construction site where a gas leak killed three workers Friday.The three were killed after inhaling nitrogen gas that leaked through a valve in the basement, according to KHNP.An official said the ministry had ordered that work be stopped until safety measures are fully implemented.Police confirmed the cause Saturday and identified the valve from which the gas leaked. The workers were found in the valve room in the basement of the New Gori No. 3 reactor.The ministry also demanded that KHNP run an emergency safety inspection of all its reactors.The move will to put the project behind schedule. The two reactors being built in the site, with a capacity of 2,800 megawatts, were expected to be operational from June 2015.A ministry official said the KHNP must choose an inspection company that specializes in nuclear power plants and which ministry has authorized. The discovery was made five days after a sample was sent for examination.
