Menthol cigarette more of health risk than regular ones

By Lee Kyung-min Although overall smoking rate is on decline, that doesn’t hold true for younger generations, according to an FDA official Mitch Zeller, director of the Center for Tobacco Products. The U.S. FDA said it will toughen up regulations against menthol cigarettes as it’s easier to get addicted and harder to quit than regular ones, according to an FDA official, Wednesday.“Young people more likely begin their smoking by using menthol cigarettes,” he said.FDA has long held the position toward regulating menthol. In 2011, it released a report of the expected public health benefit of regulating menthol.Western countries are moving toward the same direction. Additives such as pigment or flavors are banned in EU countries.Western media outlets said that the government’s attempt to ramp up the regulation might hit some roadblocks along the way.

By Lee Kyung-minThe H high-school in South Jeolla Province tried to cover up an incident where a student allegedly urinated in the mouth of another student. The bullied claimed his three seniors abused him from March to June.“And in the last week of April, one of the perpetrators peed in my mouth when I was lying in a dormitory room at 9.p.m.,” his father Lee quoted him as saying. The boy reported the case to the teacher, and the school committee ordered an indefinite suspension and an expulsion of the perpetrators. The severity of the punishment seemed to be enough for the parents to believe that the incident was reported to the Education Office.Every necessary procedure followed. Justice seemed to be done until the last meeting at the Jeollanamdo Office of Education. At the end of the meeting when the official from the office was about to finish reading the report filed by the school, the boy shouted, “That’s not all that happened.”The school attempted to leave out the urine-related fact in the report. SNU to introduce plagiarism detecting software

By Lee Kyung-min Disgraceful concession of plagiarism by noted public figures may become a thing of the past by the introduction of a new measure at Seoul National University (SNU).It will out in place a software program that detects same or similar sentences or phrases in dissertations, a spokesperson for SNU said Sunday. The measure is to hold university faculty to higher moral standards, and to promote that spirit, said the university. It further contemplates the program be the criteria for employment or promotion of the professors. As for the undergraduates’ papers, if anything suspicious gets detected, the student has to re-write until it gets an approval. SNU will adopt the system as early as February next year.Prior to this, the university screened the self-introductions and recommendations of university applicants using the software.

Texas senate passes post-20-week abortion ban bill

Texas legislators have passed a contentious bill banning abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, reported BBC.The legislation, which was debated in the state Senate after passing in the House, will also shut down most of the state's abortion clinics. Republicans had moved quickly to pass the bill after a Democratic senator originally blocked it with a marathon delaying speech.Governor Rick Perry has vowed to sign the bill into law amid large protests. The Texas legislation mirrors a series of state laws recently passed in Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Alabama, Kansas, Wisconsin and Arizona. The US Supreme Court legalized abortion nationwide in 1973, but about a dozen states have enacted laws in recent years limiting access to the procedure. Some of that state legislation is tied up in court battles. The bill came near to passage last month but was blocked in the state Senate when Senator Wendy Davis spoke for nearly 11 hours - a delaying speech known as a filibuster - in an attempt to run out the clock on the legislative session.
