Violinist to host classical music show

Shin Zi-aViolinist Shin Zi-a, 28, will host “The Concert” on the Korean Broadcasting System, which will introduce various musical genres, such as classical, jazz and cross-over styles. This is the first time she has taken to the microphone on stage instead of her violin.Shin was the first-prize winner of the Long-Thibaud International Violin Competition in Paris in 2008, and captured third-place at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Belgium in 2012.Shin’s first show premiered on June 3, featuring pianist Paik Hae-sun, soprano Kim Eun-kyung and the Abel Quartet.The new host said she is enjoying the show as it provides her an opportunity to learn about different kinds of music, and at the same time to talk with people from various musical backgrounds.

TVXQ, boy band of SM Entertainment /  Korea Times fileBy Kim Jae-heunSM, YG and JYP, Korea’s three major entertainment agencies, may become illegitimate agencies unless they are registered with the government by July 28.According to the Popular Culture Industry Act by the Ministry of Culture Sports and Tourism, which will go into full effect next month, entertainment agencies must obtain a government-approved certificate in order to continue their business as a legal entity. It states that already existing entertainment agencies before the act was established on July 29, 2014, must register by June 19, whereas newly established agencies after that date must complete registration by July 28. Yang qualifies for Gwangju UniversiadYang Hak-seonLondon Olympics gold-medal vaulter Yang Hak-seon, 23, came fourth in the qualifying trials for the 2015 Gwangju Universiade on Saturday at Taereung National Training Center, Seoul.Yang gained a total of 82.225 after displaying his signature techniques, Yang I and Yang II, but his landing was unstable.The gymnast had been leading the way since the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games until he came second in the Incheon Asian Games in 2014 after injuring his thigh.Yang will refine his techniques to prepare for the world championship trial scheduled for June 18 and 19. The vaulter will also compete in the 2015 World Championship in Glasgow, Scotland, for qualification in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
