Actress Lim Ji-yeon Actress Lim Ji-yeon, who made her debut with a leading role in the film “Obsessed,” will be MC for the MBC entertainment news show “Section TV.”The network said Monday that Lim, 25, would replace actress So Yi-hyun as the main female MC.So will go on a maternity leave, with the baby due in December. In “Obsessed,” Lim starred as a Chinese-Korean wife who has an affair. She is starring in the TV drama “Upper Class Society.” Her first appearance on “Section” will air on Aug. 2.

Striker Kim Shin-wook to lead S. Korea at regional tourney

Former World Cup striker Kim Shin-wook will lead South Korea's offense at an upcoming regional tournament.Head coach Uli Stielike on Monday announced his 23-man roster for the 2015 East Asian Cup, set to take place next month in Wuhan, China.Kim, a striker for Ulsan Hyundai who played for South Korea at last year's FIFA World Cup in Brazil, has made the national team for the first time on Stielike's watch. The German coach took over the team last fall.Kim broke his right tibia during the Asian Games last September and after-effects of the injury have kept him off Stielike's squad until this week.Kim has eight goals in 22 matches for Ulsan in the top-flight K League Classic this year.Stielike said he'd kept his eyes on Kim and patiently waited for him to recover from his leg injury."That he's scored eight goals in the league was a big factor (in the selection)," the coach said. Lee Seong-hoPresident Park Geun-hye Monday named Lee Seong-ho, current chief of the Seoul Central District Court, to lead the nation’s human rights watchdog.Lee, 57, has served as a judge for about 30 years. Lee is expected to replace Hyun Byeong-cheol the current chairman of the National Human Rights Commission.The nominee, who will serve a three-year tenure, will go through a parliamentary confirmation hearing. The National Assembly’s approval, however, is not mandatory for the appointment.

S. Korea reports no new MERS cases for 14th day

South Korea reported no additional cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) for the 14th straight day on Sunday, with no fatalities occurring for eight days, the health ministry said.The number of people diagnosed with MERS in the country remained unchanged at 186 with the death toll also staying flat at 36, according to the Ministry of Health and Welfare.As of Sunday, there were 68 people in isolation as suspected cases following possible exposure to the MERS coronavirus, down from 98 people the day before, it said.Since the country reported its first case on May 20, nearly 16,700 people have been subject to isolation for possible infection. So far, 16,625 of them have been released after showing no symptoms of MERS for more than the known maximum incubation period of 14 days for the disease.Out of those diagnosed with MERS, 136 have been discharged from hospitals following complete recoveries, up one compared to the day before, with the discharge of a 35-year-old patient.The remaining 14 were receiving treatment in hospitals, with three of them in unstable condition, accord

Police arrest resident over pesticide death

Police in Sangju, North Gyeongsang Province, have arrested an elderly resident identified only as “A” over a pesticide-related death, Yonhap reported. Six elderly women fell ill this week after drinking what they believed was cider at a community hall. The drink was found to contain pesticide, and one 86-year-old woman later died.Police said Friday they found a bottle of an energy drink without a cap in A’s house. The cider in the community hall had an energy drink cap on it, raising suspicions that someone may have poured pesticide into the bottle.The resident has denied any wrongdoing.

Ji Chang-wookChinese fans have displayed a congratulation video on Beijing’s big electronic billboard to mark the birthday of Korean actor Ji Chang-wook. He turned 28 on July 5, the Ytree PR Company said.The video was displayed on the 100-meter-long billboard of “The Place,” a Beijing tourist attraction. Fans sent messages of love and congratulations.“The video is now rapidly spreading through Weibo, a Chinese version of Twitter,” The Ytree Company said.Meanwhile, Ji is scheduled to hold a fan meeting at Seoul’s Olympic Park on July 25.

MERS: Samsung Medical Center could reopen Tuesday

Samsung Medical Center in southern Seoul is expected to reopen Tuesday, as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome shows signs of abating.Health authorities said they were considering lifting the partial closure of the leading hospital that prompted the second wave in the spread of MERS. The respiratory illness produced Korea’s first patient on May 20.Meanwhile, there were no additional cases of MERS for the 12th straight day Friday, and no fatalities in a week.

Psy emerges unscathed from China bus crash

Psy“Gangnam Style” rapper Psy escaped injury when his red Rolls Royce and a bus collided Thursday in Guangzhou, China.No one else was seriously injured, reports said, but the car’s front bumper and the side of the bus were damaged, media reports said Friday.Psy, 38, was in the car with his manager and a local employee when the crash happened. He was travelling to Hangzhou for the launch party of a bar.Psy left the scene in a police car that was accompanying him.The rapper rose to international fame with his 2012 sensational single “Gangnam Style.” His following singles, “Hangover” and “Gentleman,” also received positive responses, though they did not fare nearly as well as “Gangnam Style.”According to reports, Psy will leave Guangzhou for Beijing Friday.
