N. Korean economic growth slows in 2014

North Korea's economic growth is estimated to have slowed last year from a year earlier as its staple primary industries posted tepid performances, data showed Friday.The North's economy is projected to have expanded 1 percent in 2014, decelerating from the 1.1 percent on-year growth in the previous year, according to the data compiled by South Korea's central bank, the Bank of Korea (BOK).It has posted economic expansions for four years in a row since it contracted 0.9 percent and 0.5 percent in 2009 and 2010, respectively.The BOK explained that the North's construction sector lent support to the overall growth, bouncing back to a 1.4 percent on-year growth last year from a 1 percent fall the previous year.Pyongyang's agricultural and fishery industry, which accounts for 21.8 percent of its total output, expanded 1.2 percent last year, slowing from 1.9 percent growth in 2013.Growth in its mining and manufacturing sector, which accounts for 34.4 percent of overall output, gained 1.1 percent, down from 1.5 percent a year earlier.The data, meanwhile, showed that North Korea's nominal g

Meeting with new ruling party leaders Thursday, President Park Geun-hye said she will consider their proposal of including business leaders in the Aug. 15 special pardons. Several of Korea’s biggest business tycoons have been convicted and could receive special pardons, including SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won and his younger brother and the group's vice chairman, Chey Jae-won, CJ Group Chairman Lee Jae-hyun and Koo Bon-sang, vice chairman of LIG Nex1.The President agreed with party leaders to hold meetings between Cheong Wa Dae, the ruling party and the government.Park met party chairman Kim Moo-sung, Won Yoo-chul, the newly elected floor leader, and Kim Jung-hoon, the new chief policymaker at Cheong Wa Dae, in a signal of a new direction for the relationship between the President and the ruling party.Won replaces former majority whip Rep. Yoo Seong-min, who the President publicly castigated over the passage of a controversial bill at the National Assembly.

Singer Kim Hyun-joong countersues ex-girlfriend

Singer and actor Kim Hyun-joong has sued his ex-girlfriend for wrongfully accusing him of causing her miscarriage, his legal representative said Wednesday.The 29-year-old lodged a counterclaim of 1.2 billion won (US$1.0 million) last Saturday in response to a damages suit filed by his ex-girlfriend, identified only by her surname Choi, Kim's attorney Lee Jae-man said.Choi is seeking 1.6 billion won in compensation for the psychological trauma Kim allegedly caused her.The Kim-Choi saga started last August when Choi accused the singer of beating her and causing her to miscarry. Believing this as the truth, Kim at the time paid her 600 million won as hush money, Lee said.Kim, however, recently found out from Choi's gynecologists that she was never pregnant.Lee said the sum doesn't include the financial loss Choi has caused Kim for making false accusations.Kim plans to lodge another counterclaim once his management agency confirms the extent of the financial damages.Kim had earlier admitted to the charge of physical abuse and was fined 5 million won in January.The drama flared up again w

K-pop boy duo TVXQ will release a special album, “Rise as God,” Monday.The album is a present for fans before U-know Yunho begins his military service on Tuesday. The album will have 10 songs with solo pieces from the two serving as double title tracks, reports said. Leading K-pop stars get Teen Choice Awards gig

Top K-pop acts ­― boy band Super Junior and girl group Girls’ Generation ― will compete with global pop stars for this year’s Teen Choice Awards on the Fox TV network in the United States, SM Entertainment said Tuesday. They will vie with British boy band One Direction and Australian rock band 5 Seconds of Summer in the Choice International Artist Award division of the annual music awards show. American teens aged 13 to 19 will vote to choose the most popular and influential artists in music, film and television. Korean indie band beats idol stars

Korean indie band Hyukoh has bumped some leading idol groups from the top of the music charts. The four-member band beat out K-pop heavyweights Girls’ Generation, Sistar and AOA, who all released albums this month.Hyukoh’s “Wa Li Ga Li” topped seven online music services on Tuesday, including Melon, Mnet, Naver Music, Soribada, Genie, Bugs and Olleh Music. The song is from the group’s EP album, “22.” It has topped the charts nearly two months after its May release.The band is relatively new, having issued its maiden album, “20,” last year. It gained attention after appearing on popular Korean television entertainment show “Infinite Challenge.” After the segment aired on July 4, Hyukoh’s songs began climbing the charts.

Professor forced student to eat human waste: police

A 24-year-student is forced to swallow human waste.A Gyeonggi Province university professor, 52, who allegedly forced a student to eat human waste and hit him with a baseball bat, has been arrested.The student, 24, said he put up with the abuse in the hope of getting a job as a university professor.Police said two other students who allegedly took part with the professor were arrested, and one student was booked without detention. The professor was a noted figure in the area of design.Police allege the professor assaulted the student from March 2013 to May this year.In one incident, the professor tied the student’s hands and feet and covered his face with a plastic bag, police said. The professor then allegedly used pepper spray about 40 times on the student. The professor and the students also collected human waste and forced the student to swallow it, police said.At one stage, the student was hospitalized with serious injuries that took about six weeks to heal, police said.
