VIDEO A day of a Korean psychiatrist living in a country that won't admit it needs one

South Korea has held the highest suicide rate in the OECD for years — more than double the global average. It also has one of the lowest doctor-to-patient ratios in the developed world. The math is grim, and well-documented. What it doesn't explain is why so many Koreans who need help still won't walk through a psychiatrist's door. The reason often comes down to two letters and a number. In Korea's national health insurance system, every psychiatric visit is logged under an "F code" — the classification used for mental and behavioral disorders. F32 for depression. F41 for anxiety. F90 for ADHD. The codes are protected by medical confidentiality law and cannot be shared without the patient's consent. And yet the fear of the F code is one of the most persistent reasons Koreans avoid psychiatric care. Patients worry the code will resurface — in a future insurance application, a background check, some unspecified moment where a single record might cost them something. Sewol ferry placed upright 4 years after the tragedy

Video by Shim Hyun-chulThe wreck of the ferry Sewol was lifted upright Thursday, clearing the ground for a further search for the remains of still missing victims and an investigation into the root cause of the maritime disaster.The 6,825-ton vessel carrying 476 passengers capsized off the southwestern coast on April 16, 2014, leaving 304 people ― most of them high school students on a field trip to Jeju Island ― dead. The remains of five victims are still unaccounted for.The three-hour operation to right the ferry began at 9 a.m. at Mokpo New Port, 410 kilometers southwest of Seoul, using a 10,000-ton-capacity maritime crane from Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries manned by salvage workers. Bereaved families watched the rusted hull of the ship placed in an upright position gradually in six steps by raising it by 10 degrees through 94.5 degrees.

North Korea says denuclearization pledge not result of US-led sanctions

North Korea said its intention to denuclearize is not the result of U.S.-led sanctions and pressure. The statement Sunday (May 6) flies in the face of U.S. President Donald Trump's recent claims of credit for historic diplomatic developments between North and South. North Korea leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President moon Jae-in vowed the complete de-nuclearization of the Korean peninsula last month. (Reuters)

Unified Korea lose to Japan in table tennis world championship semi-final

The two Koreas lost their first match - the semi-finals against Japan - at the table tennis world championships on Friday (May 4) after the nations decided not to compete against each other in the quarter-finals.The decision to allow North and South Korea to field a unified team for the semi-finals in Halmstad, Sweden was announced on Thursday (May 3).It was a tripartite agreement between the leaders of the North and South Korean Table Tennis teams and the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF).The last time that a unified Korea team played the world table tennis championships was 1991 in Chiba, Japan, where the women's team shocked defending champions China to win the gold medal.North Korean player Kim Song I said she would happily join a unified team in the future.The move follows the North and South Korean leaders' pledge to work for "complete denuclearisation" of the Korean peninsula last week.The two Koreas had earlier this year joined forces to field a combined women's ice hockey team at the Pyeongchang Winter Games after

North Korea shifts its time zone to align with the South

North Korea shifted its time zone 30 minutes earlier on Saturday (May 5) to align with South Korea as a first practical step for national reconciliation and unity.Earlier this week, North Korean state media reported that its leader Kim Jong Un said it was "a painful wrench" to see two clocks showing different Pyongyang and Seoul times on a wall at the summit venue during the historic meeting on April 27 with President Moon Jae-in.North Korea created its time zone in 2015 to mark the 70th anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese rule after World War Two. SouthKorea and Japan are in the same time zone, nine hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.

Scuffle with police as defector tries to send anti-North Korea leaflets

Scuffles broke out between police and protesters near inter-Korean border on Saturday (May 5) as South Korean civic group led by North Korean defector tried to send anti-North Korea leaflets across the border using balloons.Park Sang-hak, who has previously launched message balloons into the North, planned to send 300,000 leaflets but was blocked by police and residents of border village. Park denounced North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's gesture as a fake and said he already sent some of leaflets on earlier this week.Dozens of protesters including residents of Paju, border city about 50 km (30 miles) north of Seoul, held a rally at Odusan Unification Observatory to protest against sending the leaflets as saying it is a threatening behaviour, which is almost like a war.Late April, South Korea turned off the loudspeakers that broadcast a mixture of news, Korean pop songs and criticism of the North Korean regime as a goodwill gesture ahead of the inter-Korean summit, and began dismantling them from May 1. The sight of the leaders of the two Koreas eating Pyongyang-style cold noodles at the Inter-Koreabanquet whet the appetites of Seoul residents and long queues of people formed outside of restaurants on Saturday (April 28)."I often enjoy eating Pyongyang-style cold noodles. After seeing the two leaders (Kim Jong Un and Moon Jae-in) having it at the banquet, I felt I had to have it too so I came here today. I wish we will be unified in the near future so that I can go to Pyongyang to enjoy the original Pyongyang cold noodles there," said one customer, Choi Ho-won, 30,On Friday (April 27), the summit full of smiles and handshakes was drew to a close with the noodle dish made by a chef from a famous restaurant in the North Korean capital using a special noodle machine.Many South Koreans welcomed the summit result and hoped that it could ease tensions on the peninsula that reached a crescendo last year due to North Korea's missile and nuclear tests. Moon welcomes Kim at border

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un crossed the border into South Korea for the first time on Friday (April 27), where he was greeted by the South's president, Moon Jae-in ahead of the two Koreas' first summit in more than a decade.The two leaders smiled and shook hands after which Kim Jong Un gestured to Moon they cross over to NorthKorea briefly, which they did for a few steps, then returned to the South, holding hands.Kim was handed a flower bouquet by a South Korean boy and girl, residents of a village situated in the demilitarised zone.The pair were met on a red carpet by a South Korean honour guard in historical costumes and playing traditional music.Kim and Moon then walked into the Peace House, venue of the summit, where Kim signed a guest visitor book, writing "New history starts now; age of peace, from the starting point of history".
