Park In-bee Hall of Famer

By Baek Byung-yeul Korean golfer Park In-bee will finally get a chance to have her name engraved in the LPGA Hall of Fame when the world Rolex No. 2 meets the tour’s 10-year membership requirement at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship this week.To become the 24th Hall of Famer, Park met the 27-point requirement for induction last season and she only needed 10 starts this year to become the second Korean to be inducted, following Pak Se-ri, who was honored in 2007.To qualify for the Hall of Fame, members have three criteria ― they must be active for 10 years; must have won at least one LPGA major championship ― the Vare Trophy (given to the player with the lowest-scoring average for the season) or the Rolex Player of the Year honor ― and must have accumulated a total of 27 points. One point is given for each LPGA tournament win and two for each major championship.Park In-bee reacts on the 18th green after winning the 2013 Women's U.S. Open at Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton, New York, on June 30, 2013. / UPI-YonhapPark has won

Danes strike late but Korea not too down

Korea’s Olympic football team midfielder Moon Chang-jin celebrates after scoring a goal in the first half of a match against Denmark in his team’s third game of a four-nation Under-23 football tournament at Bucheon Stadium in Gyeonggi Province, Monday. The match ended in a 1-1 draw. / YonhapBy John DuerdenAn injury-time goal gave Denmark a 1-1 tie with Korea at Bucheon, Monday evening, and top spot in this four-nation Olympic invitational tournament. The host was second in the competition going into the game just outside Seoul. The first match was a 1-0 win over Nigeria, Thursday, and then the young Taeguk Warriors needed another late goal to earn a 2-2 tie with Honduras, Saturday. This time however, it was the opposition who scored with the game almost over.Three points would have been enough to take first place and that looked to be on the cards as Moon Chang-jin scored with five minutes of the first half remaining.Denmark, however, was a tough opponent. Ahead of Monday's game, the European team was the leader of the four team meet after two high scoring victories.

Korea stuns 10-man Czech Republic in friendly

National football team forward Suk Hyun-jun, left, takes a shot during a friendly match against the Czech Republic at Eden Arena, Prague, Sunday (KST). Korea won 2-1. / YonhapBy John Duerden After a humiliating 6-1 defeat against Spain last Wednesday, ahead of Sunday’s friendly game with the Czech Republic in Prague, the minimum target was to avoid another big defeat. Instead, the Taeguk Warriors did better, much better, winning 2-1 to record their first-ever victory against the European nation. It was a fine result. The Czechs were coming off a win over Russia and are about to start the 2016 Euro Championships. Losing to South Korea was not part of their script.Yoon Bitgaram, taking the field for his country for the first time since 2012, fired home a fine free kick after 26 minutes. Five minutes before the break, Suk Hyun-jun added a very well-placed second. To be leading 2-0 at halftime was exactly what Korea needed but the Czechs narrowed that with a goal as soon as the second half started. Marek Suchy’s shot did not look too threatening until it took a deflection

South Korea stunned the 10-man Czech Republic in a 2-1 football friendly victory in Prague on Sunday.Midfielder Yoon Bitgaram had a goal and set up another in South Korea's first-ever win over the Czechs. The South Koreans entered the match at Eden Arena with three draws and a loss in their previous four meetings. Sunday's victory was sweet revenge for their 5-0 loss in 2001.It also washed off painful memories of South Korea's crushing 6-1 defeat against Spain in Austria on Wednesday. South Korea had two friendlies in Europe this month to prepare for their final Asian qualifying round for the 2018 FIFA World Cup starting in September. They will return home on Tuesday. The 50th-ranked South Korea started the match with a 4-2-3-1 formation, playing FC Porto striker Suk Hyun-jun up front with Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min and FC Augsburg attacker Ji Dong-won attacking down the flanks. The Czechs, 30th in the latest FIFA rankings, also came up with a 4-2-3-1 formation, with veteran midfielder Tomas Rosicky -- the only player on either squad to have played in the 2001 match -- sta

The performance was mixed, but because it was a preparation game with an experimental starting 11, that is not automatically a bad thing. For the young Taegeuk Warriors, this was the second of three vital warm-up games in the space of less than a week. Korea defeated Nigeria in Suwon, Thursday, and will play Denmark today.
