Korea can win Group A with win over Mexico, help from others

ZAPOPAN, Mexico — Korea can become the first team to win their group at this year's FIFA World Cup by beating Mexico this week and getting some help from other teams. Korea and Mexico will go into their Group A showdown Thursday at Estadio Guadalajara in Zapopan, western Mexico, knotted at three points each. Mexico, who beat South Africa 2-0 last week, currently occupy the top spot thanks to their superior goal difference, with Korea in second place after defeating Czechia 2-1 to begin their campaign. For Korea, a combination of their win and a win or a draw by Czechia against South Africa on Thursday will secure them the top seed in Group A, regardless of the outcome from Korea's final group stage match against South Africa next week. In this scenario, Korea will improve to six points and Mexico will remain at three points. Czechia will either grab three points or one point. Even if Korea and Mexico both finish with six points at the conclusion of the group stage, Korea will hold the tiebreak edge over Mexico by virtue of their victory in Thursday's meeting. The head-to-head record be

Big summer for Son Heung-min

By John Duerden It has been an up and down 12 months for Son Heung-min. South Korea's star forward left Germany's Bayer Leverkusen for Tottenham Hotspur in London last summer. It was the biggest transfer fee ever paid for an Asian player and fans back home were looking forward to seeing how he would perform in the English Premier League.Son Heung-minWhile there were some bright spots, it was a stop-and-start kind of season. In the league, Son was often on the bench and started just 13 games. He finished just one of those. To play the full 90 minutes just once was disappointing. It was however, his first season and it takes time to adapt. Not only that, Spurs was challenging for the title until the very end and playing well. When a team is winning, it can be hard to get regular starts. Son scored four goals in total and there were signs that he was improving later in the season. As first seasons in a new league go, it was either the building of a foundation towards a good second season or just the start of what is going to be a forgettable time in English football. In one of the most controversial developments in recent Olympic memory, Shin and Heidemann exchanged three simultaneous hits while the clock kept showing one second remaining. After the third hit, the clock went down to zero but was reset to the one-second mark. If the match had ended in a tie, Shin would have been declared the winner as the more aggressive fencer of the two. The timekeeping mishap gave Heidemann new life, and the German lunged for the decisive hit as the time finally ran out.Shin remained on the piste while her coaches were protesting the call.
