Padres' Song Sung-mun hits 1st MLB home run in loss

Song Sung-mun has hit his first home run in Major League Baseball. Song hit a solo shot off Chicago Cubs starter Colin Rea to lead off the top of the fifth inning at Wrigley Field in Chicago on Wednesday (local time). Song drilled a middle-middle fastball from Rea and sent it 385 feet into the stands in right field. The line drive shot left Song's bat at 107.7 miles per hour, with a launch angle of 20 degrees. Song had hit a double in his first trip to the plate in the third inning. The former Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) All-Star flied out in the sixth and grounded out in the eighth. The Korean is batting .233 in 33 games in his first major league campaign, and has a home run, nine RBIs and six steals. Song's home run cut the Padres' deficit to 9-1 and they went on to lose by 23-3. San Diego starter Walker Buehler served up three home runs and reliever Kyle Hart, a former starting pitcher in the KBO, also surrendered three dingers. Catcher Rodolfo Duran, who pitched the final two innings of the blowout, gave up two more long balls, as the Padres suffered their fifth consecutive loss.

Interview'Disability is not a limitation': Judoka aims higher after Tokyo Deaflympics bronze

Lee Ju-ho, a judoka on the team run by the Korea Deposit Insurance Corp. (KDIC), won a bronze medal at the 2025 Tokyo Deaflympics on Nov. 16. The 20-year-old, competing on the international stage for the first time against a series of strong opponents, said, “Not giving up until the very end was the key to victory.” The Deaflympics is an Olympic-level international competition for athletes with hearing impairments, organized by the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf. The 2025 Tokyo Deaflympics, which commenced Nov. 15, marks the 100th anniversary of the event and features competitions in 21 sports through Nov. 26. In an interview with The Korea Times after returning home, Lee cited the repechage — a type of consolation bracket — and the bronze medal match as the most memorable moments of the competition. “Winning in the round of 16 but then losing to an Iranian opponent in the quarterfinals was tough to accept,” he said. “Still, with the repechage ahead, I focused on regaining my composure and concentrating fully. Once I made it through the repechage, I reminde

Captain for K League 1 champions Jeonbuk nominated for MVP award

Park Jin-seob, who captained Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors to the Korean football title this fall, has been nominated for the league MVP award. The Korea Professional Football League (K League) announced nominees for major end-of-season awards on Thursday. For the MVP honor, Park will be up against Pablo Sabbag of Suwon FC and Lee Dong-gyeong of Ulsan HD FC. Primarily a center back in previous seasons, Park turned himself into a defensive midfielder under new head coach Gus Poyet and helped Jeonbuk clinch their record 10th K League 1 title on Oct. 18 with five matches left to play. With Park serving as the key cog in their defensive system, Jeonbuk have conceded the fewest goals in the league so far with 31 in 36 matches. Sabbag is leading the K League 1 with 17 goals in 32 matches in his first season in Korea, trying to keep Suwon FC out of the relegation zone. Lee started the season with the military club, Gimcheon Sangmu FC, and had 13 goals and 11 assists in 34 matches with them. Following his discharge from the military service, Lee returned to Ulsan, where he recorded one assist in two mat

Lone LPGA tournament in Korea to return to southern course for 2026

The LPGA Tour will return to the southern coast of Korea for its only tournament in the country next fall. The LPGA released its 2026 schedule on Wednesday (U.S. local time), with 33 tournaments offering a record purse of $132 million. And for the second consecutive year, the BMW Ladies Championship will be played at Pine Beach Golf Links in Haenam, South Jeolla Province, from October 22 to 25. It will have a purse of $2.35 million, up from $2.3 million this year. Kim Sei-young won this year's tournament to become the first Korean champion of the event since Ko Jin-young in 2021. The LPGA and BMW Korea have been taking the tournament around the country since the southeastern city of Busan hosted the first two editions in 2019 and 2021 — with the 2020 event canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2022 tournament was held in the eastern town of Wonju, and the city of Paju in Gyeonggi Province, hosted the next two editions. Designed by Gary Roger Baird and Davie Dale, Pine Beach Golf Links features several greens and tee boxes sitting along the beach and atop seaside cliffs. It has long

S. Korea remain at No. 22 in last FIFA rankings before World Cup draw

On the strength of two consecutive wins this month. South Korea stayed at No. 22 in the latest FIFA rankings released Thursday, all but guaranteeing themselves a favorable position for the upcoming World Cup draw. South Korea defeated Bolivia 2-0 last Friday and then Ghana 1-0 on Tuesday to close out the year. South Korea added 5.53 points to reach 1,599.45 points to remain at No. 22. The position most likely means South Korea will be in Pot 2 for the World Cup draw, scheduled for noon on Dec. 5 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, or 2 a.m. Dec. 6 in South Korean time. The 48 participating nations will be divided into four pots of 12. Pot 1 will feature the three co-host nations, the United States, Mexico and Canada, and the nine best teams in the FIFA rankings that have qualified for the World Cup. Those nine countries are also first to ninth in the latest rankings: Spain, Argentina, France, England, Brazil, Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Pot 2 will be made up of the next 12 best qualified nations. With the interconfederation playoffs and European playoffs still remain

Assistant coach for K League 1 champs Jeonbuk suspended for racist gesture

An Argentine assistant coach for the Korean football champions Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors was slapped with a five-match suspension Wednesday for making a racist gesture toward a referee. The Korea Professional Football League (K League) also imposed a fine of 20 million won (US$13,610) on coach Mauricio Taricco, who was seen making what the league officials said was a "slanted-eye" gesture at referee Kim Woo-seong during Jeonbuk's K League 1 match against Daejeon Hana Citizen FC on Nov. 8. During that match, Taricco argued Kim's decision not to call a handball violation on a Daejeon player. The coach was initially shown a yellow card and Kim ejected Taricco with a red card moments later, as the coach kept arguing even after a penalty was awarded following a video review. After being shown the red card, Taricco placed his two index fingers next to the corners of his eyes. Kim felt it had been a racist gesture and reported the incident to the K League's disciplinary committee last Thursday. A day earlier, the Korea Professional Football Referee Association (KPFRA) asked both the K League and t

KBO to hand out MVP, top rookie awards on Nov. 24

The Korean baseball league will present its regular-season MVP award and the top rookie prize during an annual ceremony next week. The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) said Wednesday the 2025 KBO Awards ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. Monday at Lotte Hotel World in Seoul. The KBO already announced 18 candidates for the MVP award on Oct. 5, with leaders of major pitching and hitting categories earning automatic nominations. The battle for the MVP honor is widely viewed as a two-horse race between Hanwha Eagles ace Cody Ponce, the pitching Triple Crown winner, and Samsung Lions first baseman Lewin Diaz, who topped the league in home runs, RBIs, slugging percentage and on-base plus slugging (OPS). Ponce led the KBO with 17 wins, a 1.89 ERA and a league-record 252 strikeouts. The American right-hander also established a new mark for the most consecutive wins by a pitcher from the start of a season with 17, while losing just one decision for a league-best winning percentage of .944. Diaz led all hitters with 50 home runs — the most ever by a foreign-born player in league history — and set t

Wins for Korea amid frowns and empty seats

Another busy year draws to a close for South Korea’s national team, and once again, there are as many questions as answers. Few fans would have been surprised back in January to hear that the Taeguk Warriors would qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Equally few eyebrows would have been raised if told that serious doubts would linger about the team’s true level. It sounds odd to say after two wins in five days in mid-November, including a 2-0 victory over Bolivia in Daejeon on Friday, followed by a 1-0 win over Ghana in Seoul on Tuesday. Wins are always welcome, especially when no goals are conceded, but it still feels like something is missing. Supporters seem to sense it. Seoul World Cup Stadium was half-empty for the game against Ghana, and attendance at their match against Paraguay last month was even lower. The team lacks spark and direction. Lee Kang-in of Paris Saint-Germain is the creative heartbeat, and rightly so; the 24-year-old is a rare talent. Son Heung-min remains the leading attacker, as he has been for years at the highest level. But outside of these two, there is little

Underwhelming Korea team leaves much to be desired before World Cup

For those who worship at the altar of "a win is a win" mantra, the men's national football team had a really good year, as they posted eight wins, three draws and two losses. Upon closer inspection, though, it's not that difficult to identify Korea as a deeply flawed team with issues that must be addressed ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Coached by Hong Myung-bo, 22nd-ranked Korea defeated No. 76 Bolivia 2-0 last Friday and then No. 73 Ghana 1-0 on Tuesday in their final two matches of the year. While Hong stressed the importance of results above all else — with Korea needing to win to maintain their FIFA ranking spot and assure themselves a favorable position in the World Cup draw next month — the team's inability to beat underdog opponents convincingly did not sit well with fans. That was the recurring theme throughout the year, with Korea consistently underperforming and failing to live up to expectations of the increasingly restless fan base. Korea opened the year with consecutive 1-1 draws at home against two heavy underdogs, Oman and Jordan. These matches came during the thir

Korea squeeze past Ghana in final friendly of 2025

Korea narrowly beat Ghana 1-0 on Tuesday in their final men's friendly football match of the year. Defender Lee Tae-seok headed in the match's lone goal in the 63rd minute before 33,256 fans at Seoul World Cup Stadium in the capital city on this chilly late autumn night, with world No. 22 Korea submitting an uninspiring performance against 73rd-ranked Ghana. Second-half sub Hwang Hee-chan had his penalty saved by Benjamin Asare in the 74th minute, and Korea survived some dicey moments to hang on for the narrow win. Korea finished the year with a record of eight wins, three draws and two losses. This was also Korea's final match before the Dec. 5 draw for next year's FIFA World Cup. Tuesday's win, combined with a 2-0 victory over Bolivia last week, all but ensured Korea will end up in Pot 2 of the draw and avoid getting drawn with two top-20 opponents in the group stage. Pot 1 will include the three co-hosts, the United States, Canada and Mexico, plus the top nine qualified nations in the next FIFA rankings, which will be released Wednesday. Head coach Hong Myung-bo made some lineup changes

Korean Series champions Twins sign Australian pitcher Wells

The reigning Korean Series champions LG Twins on Tuesday announced their signing of Australian pitcher Lachlan Wells as their Asian quota player for next season. The Twins said the left-hander agreed to a one-year deal worth $200,000, the maximum amount allowed for Asian quota players. Starting in 2026, the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) will allow its clubs to sign a player from an Asian country or Australia, in addition to three foreign-born players. The Asian quota player must have competed in Asia or in Australia in the season immediately before the year he signs with a KBO team. In 2025, Wells went 1-1 with a 3.15 ERA in four appearances as a temporary injury replacement for another KBO club, the Kiwoom Heroes. Prior to that, Wells had pitched in the Australian Baseball League, winning the MVP award there in 2023, and reached as high as Double-A in the U.S. minor leagues. "Lachlan Wells is an experienced left-hander who can command all of his pitches, and he proved he can compete at this level during the 2025 season," the Twins said. "We believe he can add depth to our pitching st
