Padres' Song Sung-mun hits 1st MLB home run in loss

Song Sung-mun has hit his first home run in Major League Baseball. Song hit a solo shot off Chicago Cubs starter Colin Rea to lead off the top of the fifth inning at Wrigley Field in Chicago on Wednesday (local time). Song drilled a middle-middle fastball from Rea and sent it 385 feet into the stands in right field. The line drive shot left Song's bat at 107.7 miles per hour, with a launch angle of 20 degrees. Song had hit a double in his first trip to the plate in the third inning. The former Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) All-Star flied out in the sixth and grounded out in the eighth. The Korean is batting .233 in 33 games in his first major league campaign, and has a home run, nine RBIs and six steals. Song's home run cut the Padres' deficit to 9-1 and they went on to lose by 23-3. San Diego starter Walker Buehler served up three home runs and reliever Kyle Hart, a former starting pitcher in the KBO, also surrendered three dingers. Catcher Rodolfo Duran, who pitched the final two innings of the blowout, gave up two more long balls, as the Padres suffered their fifth consecutive loss.

2-time Olympic speed skating champion Lee Seung-hoon retires from nat'l team

Lee Seung-hoon, the most decorated South Korean speed skater in Olympic history with six medals won at four Winter Games, announced his retirement from international competition Monday. Lee, 37, made his decision after missing out on a ticket to the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy in the men's 5,000 meters at the national team trials at Taeneung International Rink in Seoul. With the top two skaters earning their Olympic spots, Lee finished in fourth place with a time of 6:43.87. Chung Jae-won won the race in 6:41.73, and high school skater Cho Seung-min ranked second in 6:41.85. Lee only registered for 5,000m at the national team trials. Lee burst onto the scene by capturing a stunning gold medal in the men's 10,000m at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. He added a silver in the 5,000m at the same event. Four years later in Sochi, Russia, Lee won silver in the team pursuit. Then when South Korea's PyeongChang hosted the 2018 Winter Games, Lee soared to gold in the men's mass start and took silver in the team pursuit, too. Lee reached the podium for his fourth consecutive Olympics in Beijing

Landers manager asks relievers to keep doing their things

DAEGU — With his lockdown bullpen having submitted two strong postseason games so far, SSG Landers manager Lee Sung-yong has a simple message for his relief corps: keep calm and keep doing your things. If those relievers heed Lee's words, then the Landers will have a great chance of knocking off the Samsung Lions in their first-round series in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) postseason. "I always tell my relievers never to try to do too much," Lee said Monday before Game 3 of the best-of-five showdown at Daegu Samsung Lions Park in the southeastern city of Daegu. The series is knotted at 1-1. "If our relievers can stay composed and do what they did during the regular season, I think they can absolutely dominate the opposing hitters," Lee added. "So I hope they will just stay relaxed and do what they have done all year." The Landers posted the best bullpen ERA in the regular season at 3.36, and their relievers also struck out more batters than any other bullpen with 502. Opposing teams only had an on-base plus slugging of .669, also tops in the KBO. So far this series, their trio o

Lions slugger Diaz voted KBO's top player for Sept.-Oct.

Lewin Diaz of the Samsung Lions was named the top player in South Korean baseball for the final month of the regular season on Monday. The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) said Diaz beat out seven other candidates for the Player of the Month honor for the September-October period. The Dominican first baseman is the first foreign player for the Lions to win this award. Diaz earned 30 out of 35 votes cast by members of the Korea Baseball Writers Association, and 286,323 votes out of 530,365 votes submitted online by fans. Those totals were converted to 69.85 voting points, and Austin Dean of the LG Twins finished a distant second with 7.39 points. Over the final full month of the regular season and then one game in October, Diaz ranked first in the KBO with 27 RBIs, an .838 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage. He also tied for second with seven home runs and ranked third with 28 hits and a .412 batting average. Diaz made history by setting the single-season RBI record with 158. He also smacked 50 home runs to become the first foreign player to reach the half-century mark in

2 Koreans earn PGA Tour cards out of second-tier tour

Two Korean players have earned their PGA Tour cards for next year following strong seasons on the second-tier circuit in 2025. Kim Seong-hyeon and Lee Seung-taek both finished inside the top 20 on the Korn Ferry Tour Points List, following the conclusion of the season-ending Korn Ferry Tour Championship in French Lick, Indiana, on Sunday (local time). Kim tied for 12th and Lee tied for 24th at the tournament. Kim, who had first played on the PGA Tour in 2023 but lost his membership last year, had long booked his return ticket to the big tour. He finished eighth on the Korn Ferry Tour rankings, on the strength of his victory at the AdventHealth Championship in May and a pair of runner-up finishes. Lee finished 13th on the same rankings. He is one of six players to finish inside the top 20 without a victory this season. He tallied six top-10 finishes, including a loss in a playoff to Neal Shipley at the LECOM Suncoast Classic in April. Lee made the second most cuts on the Korn Ferry Tour this year with 21, one back of Pontus Nyholm. Lee played eight years on the Korea PGA (KPGA) Tour before

Teen short tracker claims 2nd title at ISU World Tour

Teenager Rim Jong-un has finished his first International Skating Union (ISU) Short Track World Tour competition by anchoring Korea to the men's relay title in Canada. Rim teamed up with Hwang Dae-heon, Lee June-seo and Shin Dong-min for the men's 5,000-meter relay gold medal at the season's first World Tour stop at Maurice Richard Arena in Montreal on Sunday (local time). The quartet clocked 6:50.781, with China finishing in second place in 6:51.160. This was the second gold medal of this event for Rim, who had earlier won the men's 1,500m title in his World Tour debut Saturday. The 17-year-old won the national team trials in April this year. Also on Sunday, Rim won silver in the men's 1,000m behind Pietro Sighel of Italy. Rim also competed in the mixed 2,000m relay, alongside Choi Min-jeong, Kim Gil-li and Lee Jeong-min, but the Korean team was disqualified after crossing the line in second place in the final. In other races of the day, Kim Gil-li finished second in the women's 1,500m for her second silver medal of the competition. She had won silver in the 1,000m on Saturday. This was t

After humiliating loss to Brazil, Korea looking to bounce back vs. Paraguay

The Korean men's national football team will look for a rebound against Paraguay this week in Seoul after getting embarrassed by Brazil at home last week. Korea, ranked 23rd, will host 37th-ranked Paraguay at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Seoul World Cup Stadium. This will be the first meeting between these two nations since a friendly in June 2022, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Son Heung-min had one of the two Korean goals then. He is currently No. 2 on the all-time Korean male scoring list with 53 goals, five behind former striker Cha Bum-kun. Son failed to add to that total against Brazil last Friday as Korea endured a 5-0 loss while getting completely dismantled by their superior opponent. Korea managed just one shot on target. Before the Brazil match, Korea head coach Hong Myung-bo had said he was looking forward to the latest test for his back-three formation. And his team failed miserably as highly skilled Brazilian forwards toyed with helpless Korean defenders all night. Though Paraguay are ranked 14 spots below Korea, they will not be a pushover. During their World Cup qualifiers, Paraguay too

Ace right-handers set for duel in pivotal KBO postseason game

Two right-handed aces will go toe-to-toe in a crucial Korean baseball postseason game this week. The SSG Landers and the Samsung Lions are tied at one game apiece in their first-round series in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) postseason. The Lions took the first game 5-2 on Thursday at Incheon SSG Landers Field in Incheon, some 30 kilometers west of Seoul, and then the Landers responded with a 4-3 victory two days later at their home park. When the best-of-five series resumes at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Daegu Samsung Lions Park in Daegu, about 235 km southeast of the capital, the Lions will have homegrown star Won Tae-in on the mound. Won went 12-4 with a 3.24 ERA in the regular season — his fifth straight year with a sub-4.00 ERA. Last Tuesday, Won fired six shutout innings and struck out five batters to help the Lions beat the NC Dinos 3-0 to win the wild card round and book a ticket to the series against the Landers. Won made three regular-season starts against the Landers but did not have a win-loss record. He had a 3.71 ERA and surrendered 24 hits — more than against any opposi

Landers walk off Lions to even KBO postseason series

The SSG Landers walked off the Samsung Lions 4-3 at home on Saturday to even up their Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) postseason series at one game apiece. Kim Seong-uk smacked the game-winning solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning off Ariel Jurado in Game 2 of the first-round series before a sellout crowd of 22,500. The blast came minutes after the Landers had blown a 3-2 lead in the top half of that inning. The best-of-five series will shift to Daegu Samsung Lions Park in Daegu, 235 kilometers southeast of Seoul, for Game 3 at 6:30 p.m. Monday. For the Landers, starter Kim Keon-woo struck out seven batters in 3 1/3 innings in his postseason debut, including a league-record six straight to start the game, while Ko Myeong-jun homered for the second straight game. With Kim enjoying a dream start, his teammates backed him up with some early runs. In the bottom second, Ko smacked a solo home run off starter Gerson Garabito, jumping on a first-pitch slider for his second home run in two games. Then in the bottom third, Choi Jeong scored Cho Hyeong-woo with a broken-bat single for

Landers starter Kim Keon-woo sets KBO postseason strikeout record

SSG Landers starting pitcher Kim Keon-woo set a South Korean baseball postseason record by striking out the first six batters he faced Saturday. Kim, a 23-year-old left-hander in his first Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) postseason game, struck out the side in both the first and second innings against the Samsung Lions in Game 2 of their first-round series at Incheon SSG Landers Field in Incheon, about 30 kilometers west of Seoul. Kim got Lee Jae-hyeon to whiff on a fastball for the first strikeout and then got Kim Seong-yoon looking at a 0-2 fastball for his second K. Koo Ja-wook then whiffed on a 3-2 fastball to end a six-pitch at-bat. Kim then struck out Lewin Diaz looking at a fastball. Kim Young-woong swung and missed on a 1-2 slider, and Kim Keon-woo set the record by getting Kim Hun-gon to fan on a 0-2 changeup in the dirt. The previous record had been five straight batters sat down by Keyvius Sampson of the Hanwha Eagles against the Nexen Heroes on Oct. 20, 2018. Kim recorded another strikeout in the third inning, in which the Landers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom half of that i

Landers ace Anderson nearing full health after bout with stomach flu: manager

SSG Landers manager Lee Sung-yong said Saturday that his ace Drew Anderson is nearly back to full health after a recent bout with stomach flu. In fact, Lee said Anderson will be ready to pitch Sunday if the scheduled Game 2 of the first-round series in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) against the Samsung Lions is postponed Saturday due to rain. Anderson, who finished second overall in the KBO with 245 strikeouts and third with a 2.25 ERA this season, wasn't able to start the opening game of this best-of-five series Thursday after coming down with stomach problems earlier in the week. "He had a pretty good bullpen session yesterday, and I've been told he's in good form now," Lee said in a media availability at Incheon SSG Landers Field in Incheon, about 30 kilometers west of Seoul. "He has lost about 3 kilograms because he hasn't been eating well." Mother Nature has wreaked havoc on the KBO postseason schedule. Game 2 was already moved back from Friday to Saturday, and Saturday's game is expected to begin under threatening skies. If it proceeds as scheduled, Anderson will start Game
