Padres' Song Sung-mun hits 1st MLB home run in loss

Song Sung-mun has hit his first home run in Major League Baseball. Song hit a solo shot off Chicago Cubs starter Colin Rea to lead off the top of the fifth inning at Wrigley Field in Chicago on Wednesday (local time). Song drilled a middle-middle fastball from Rea and sent it 385 feet into the stands in right field. The line drive shot left Song's bat at 107.7 miles per hour, with a launch angle of 20 degrees. Song had hit a double in his first trip to the plate in the third inning. The former Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) All-Star flied out in the sixth and grounded out in the eighth. The Korean is batting .233 in 33 games in his first major league campaign, and has a home run, nine RBIs and six steals. Song's home run cut the Padres' deficit to 9-1 and they went on to lose by 23-3. San Diego starter Walker Buehler served up three home runs and reliever Kyle Hart, a former starting pitcher in the KBO, also surrendered three dingers. Catcher Rodolfo Duran, who pitched the final two innings of the blowout, gave up two more long balls, as the Padres suffered their fifth consecutive loss.

Battle of aces in opening game of KBO postseason series

The Hanwha Eagles will open their first Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) postseason series in seven years with their Triple Crown winner Cody Ponce on the hill on Friday. Their opponents for the best-of-five series, the Samsung Lions, will counter with their key midseason pickup, Gerson Garabito. Game 1 of the second round of the postseason starts at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Daejeon Hanwha Life Ballpark in the central city of Daejeon. Ponce is a strong regular-season MVP candidate after winning the Triple Crown in his first KBO season. The right-hander led the league with 17 wins, a 1.89 ERA and a league-record 252 strikeouts. Ponce also lost just one game and set the record for the longest winning streak by a pitcher from the start of a season with 17. Though Ponce wasn't nearly as dominant in the August-September period as he had been earlier in the year, he has had more than two weeks off to rest and regroup for this series, with the Eagles earning a bye to this series as No. 2 seed. Ponce faced the Lions just once during the regular season on July 30, and he held them to six hits — all

Players bracing for windy week at LPGA tournament on seaside Korean course

With the LPGA Tour making its annual stop in Korea on a seaside course this week, the tournament's top names said Wednesday they must be able to handle windy conditions. The BMW Ladies Championship will begin Thursday at Pine Beach Golf Links in Haenam, South Jeolla Province. The par-72 course is known for having several greens and tee boxes sitting along the beach and atop seaside cliffs. Some showers are expected for Thursday and Saturday, but Kim Hyo-joo, the top-ranked Korean player at No. 8, said wind will be more of a factor. "I've practiced here for a couple of days, and I had to deal with strong gusts of wind on holes near the ocean," Kim said at a joint press conference at the course, alongside fellow Korean players Ryu Hae-ran, Kim A-lim and Yoon Ina, defending champion Hannah Green, and the Japanese rookie sensation Miyu Yamashita. "I heard we will face some blustery conditions on the weekend, so I will have to be ready," Kim Hyo-joo added. "Kim won the Ford Championship in March and has had two runner-up finishes in her past five starts, including at the Lotte Championship las

KBO's top pitching staff to take on most lethal lineup in postseason

The next series in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) postseason will be a battle between the team with the pitching staff and the team with the most powerful lineup. The Hanwha Eagles rode their superb pitching to the second-best record in the regular season at 83-57-4 (wins-losses-ties), earning themselves a bye to the second round of the postseason. They had the lowest team ERA at 3.55 and struck out the most batters with 1,339. They will take on the Samsung Lions, who finished fourth at 74-68-2, and knocked off fifth-seed NC Dinos in the wild card round before eliminating No. 3 seed SSG Landers in four games in the best-of-five first round. The Lions topped the league with 161 home runs and a .780 on-base plus slugging during the regular season. The second round, also a best-of-five series, begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Daejeon Hanwha Life Ballpark in Daejeon, 140 kilometers south of Seoul. It will be the first postseason game in Daejeon since 2018 and also the first one at this stadium, which opened this year. The winner will go on to meet the regular-season champions LG Twins i

Korea defeat Paraguay in men's football friendly

Korea scored a goal apiece in each half to defeat Paraguay 2-0 in their men's football friendly match in Seoul on Tuesday, a nice bounceback effort after a lopsided loss to Brazil last week. Eom Ji-sung scored in the 15th minute in his first international start, while second-half sub Oh Hyeon-gyu netted the second goal in the 75th minute before a sparse crowd of some 22,000 fans at Seoul World Cup Stadium. On the heels of a 5-0 loss to Brazil last Friday, head coach Hong Myung-bo inserted eight new players into his starting lineup, including goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu and center back Lee Han-beom. A mix-up between Kim and Lee near the Korean box almost cost Korea a goal in the third minute, with Diego Gomez getting a piece of the loose ball before it bounced out of play. Korea opened the scoring thanks to a fortuitous bounce in the 15th minute. Lee Myung-jae sent a cross from left toward the goalmouth, and defender Junior Alonso's botched clearing attempt ended up at the feet of Eom, who made no mistake with his right-footed shot. Kim Seung-gyu then made his presence felt in the late moment

Culture minister seeks to expand K-pop concerts at Seoul World Cup Stadium

Culture and sports minister on Tuesday said the government will push for measures to allow more large-scale K-pop concerts at Seoul World Cup Stadium, the capital's only venue capable of holding more than 50,000 spectators. Chae Hwi-young made the remarks during a parliamentary audit of his ministry after lawmakers noted the country's lack of suitable venues for major K-pop events. "The government is considering ways to use protective mats similar to those at London's Wembley Stadium to prevent lawn damage at Sangam World Cup Stadium," Chae said, using another name for the Seoul facility. The stadium has recently hosted solo concerts by top artists, such as Lim Young-woong and IU, but renting the venue has been difficult due to concerns about turf damage. "I will have the culture ministry lend the mats to the Seoul metropolitan government for use at the stadium," Chae said. "We will test ways to make the venue available for performances as early as possible." The ministry also plans to support the budget to upgrade the stadium for concerts, including turf restoration, lighting and sound e

Son Heung-min celebrated for becoming most-capped male player for Korea

Son Heung-min was celebrated on Tuesday for becoming the most-capped male player in Korean football history. Son earned his 137th cap in a friendly match against Brazil in Seoul last Friday, breaking a tie with his current national team head coach Hong Myung-bo and former star striker Cha Bum-kun to reach the top of the all-time South Korean male appearances list. Son padded his lead by drawing into the starting lineup against Paraguay for another friendly match at Seoul World Cup Stadium on Tuesday. Before the kickoff, the Korea Football Association (KFA) held a ceremony to recognize Son's accomplishment. Son's international career highlights were played on the stadium's two main scoreboards before the players for both teams entered the field. Then after the national anthems, Cha presented Son with a commemorative jersey with No. 137 on the back. KFA President Chung Mong-gyu then gifted Son a special muffler. Son, now 33, played his first senior international match as an 18-year-old on Dec. 30, 2010, in a friendly against Syria. He has represented South Korea at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 F

Lions slugger Diaz says KBO postseason 'is not about me'

Through three games of the ongoing Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) postseason series against the SSG Landers, Lewin Diaz of the Samsung Lions is leading his team with four hits and is tied for first with three RBIs. He has only struck out once in 13 trips to the plate. And the Dominican slugger is doing all this after leading the regular season with a KBO-record 158 RBIs and 50 home runs, the most ever by a foreign-born hitter in league history. However, with the Lions leading the best-of-five showdown 2-1 entering Tuesday's contest, Diaz wanted to deflect attention from himself and toward the team goal. "I know everybody wants to see me hit a lot in the postseason, but the postseason is not about me," Diaz said in his pregame media availability at Daegu Samsung Lions Park in the southeastern city of Daegu. "The postseason is about winning. I know everybody wants to do a good job but for me, it's about winning. If I'm not doing a really good job as a hitter, I can even do it on defense. I just think about winning, not my number." Diaz went 0-for-7 in two games in the wild card phase la

Lions outfielder trying to keep things simple, have fun

Kim Seong-yoon, the Samsung Lions outfielder who can hit and run with the best of them, steps into the batter's box to Eric Clapton's iconic guitar intro for the song "Layla," which was recorded 29 years before Kim was born. It is quite possibly the oldest and the most famous tune ever used as a walk-up song in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO). One may wonder why a 26-year-old, married baseball player would choose a song about forbidden love to get pumped up before at-bats. Kim has previously said he picked it simply because he liked the classic rock song when his older brother recommended it. That's just who he is — someone who likes to keep things simple while playing a sport that can take its mental toll on its participants. And it was this kind of a straightforward approach that helped Kim bat a career-high .331 this regular season, the third-highest mark in the league. He ranked second with a .419 on-base percentage and tied for ninth with 26 steals in what was easily the best campaign of his nine-year KBO career. Kim once again leaned on that mindset to bust out of a hitless

Major champions teeing off as LPGA makes lone annual Korea stop this week

The LPGA Tour will make its annual stop in Korea this week, with a scenic course on the country's southern coast hosting major champions and homegrown stars over four days. The sixth edition of the BMW Ladies Championship will start Thursday at Pine Beach Golf Links in Haenam, some 330 kilometers south of Seoul in South Jeolla Province. There will be no cut in the 72-hole tournament featuring 78 players, who will vie for the $2.3 million purse. The champion will take home $345,000. This will be the first edition held at Pine Beach Golf Links, famous for having several greens and tee boxes sitting along the beach and atop seaside cliffs. It has long been regarded as one of the best courses in Korea thanks to its scenic backdrop and the challenges it presents with sloping fairways and intimidating bunkers. The LPGA and BMW Korea have moved the tournament around the country since the southeastern port city of Busan held the first two editions in 2019 and 2021. The 2020 event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The tournament was held in Wonju, about 85 km east of Seoul, in 2022, befor

Lions defeat Landers to grab stranglehold in KBO postseason

DAEGU -- Behind a solid performance from their starting pitcher and a string of timely hits, the Samsung Lions defeated the SSG Landers 5-3 on Monday to move within a win of reaching the next round in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) postseason. Starter Won Tae-in held the Landers to a run over 6 2/3 innings on a rainy night before a sellout crowd of 23,680 fans at Daegu Samsung Lions Park in the southeastern city of Daegu, as the Lions grabbed a 2-1 lead in this best-of-five first-round series. Their top three hitters in the lineup, Kim Ji-chan, Kim Seong-yoon and Koo Ja-wook, each had two hits while combining for three RBIs and four runs scored. The Lions will move on to the next stage with a win in Game 4 at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the same Daegu stadium. The teams were tied at 1-1 in this series before Monday. On seven previous occasions where teams split the first two games of the first-round series, the one that took Game 3 went on to win the series all seven times. After being silenced by starter Drew Anderson over the first two innings, the Lions put up a three-spot in the thir
