Another 'selfie' taken in operating theater

/ Korea Times fileOnly a week after Chinese doctors were criticized for “surgery selfies,” pictures of a Korean medical team holding a birthday party in an operating theater is causing controversy. A nurse at a large plastic surgery clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, posted pictures on Sunday of medical staff carrying a birthday cake and playing with prostheses in the theater. Some nurses were playing a game while four other staff were using surgical instruments to fix a bracelet. On her Instagram, a photo-sharing application, the nurse described the photo as a “selfie,” or “in middle of surgery.”The pictures were rapidly shared online and the nurse deleted her account.The clinic is reportedly well known, with many advertisements at subway stations.

Winning satire lampoons Lotte World Mall's 'safety'

(KOBACO)’s “2014 Korea Public Service Advertising Festival” winner has gone viral with its creative satire on Lotte World Mall’s industrial accidents. KOBACO co-hosted the festival with the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) and announced the presidential prize winner “Pinocchio’s Lie,” on Dec. 10. On Friday, KOBACO publicized the winning piece on a rusty pillar at a bus station in front of Lotte World Mall in Jamsil, Seoul. Korea-Oman visa waiver pact

First Vice Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yong, right, and Omani Ambassador to Korea Mohamed Alharthy hold a visa waiver agreement after they signed the pact calling for visa-free entry into each other’s country for diplomats and other government officials. Rapper to sue Sony over song in 'The Interview'

Yoon Mi-rae / Korea Times fileRapper Yoon Mi-rae, 34, plans to sue Sony Pictures Entertainment for using her song in the film “The Interview” without her permission.Yoon’s management company, FeelGhoodMusic, said she would sue Sony and Korea’s DFSB Kollective for illegally using “Pay Day,” a hip-hop song from her third studio album “YOONMIRAE” released in February 2007.FeelGhoodMusic was quoted in a local newspaper as saying there had been talks about using the song in the movie, but there had been no agreement.It and Yoon claim they only found the song was used without any agreement or contract after the film was released Thursday.The song is used in a scene in which North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is partying with two American journalists who are on a CIA mission to assassinate him.

Couple brawls on Korean Air flight from Atlanta to Incheon

/ AP-YonhapA Korean woman in her fifties was handed over airport police last week after she caused a disturbance on a Korean Air flight, Yonhap News Agency reports. Company officials confirmed the Dec. 19 incident to Yonhap on Friday. According to the news report, the woman quarreled with her husband in the business-class section during a flight from Atlanta to Incheon, throwing books and dishes at him. She reportedly pushed a crew member during the scuffle.The disturbance began about four and a half hours after departing Atlanta and carried on for three hours. Crew members immediately requested that the woman show self-restraint and gave her a written warning. However, the efforts weren’t immediately successful. The woman was moved to economy class, but got back up and tried to continue the fight with her husband.“We are allowed to use stun gun and tie up the passengers if they go out of control,” an official from the Korean Air told Yonhap. “But we managed to calm her down and separated her from her husband.”

Many students see plastic surgery as resume booster

 / YonhapOne out of five female university students in Korea are willing to go under the knife if it will help them secure a job, a survey found. Conducted by the Yeouido Institute, which is run by the ruling Saenuri Party, the survey asked 5,617 male and female students at four-year colleges about their feelings regarding plastic surgery.Among the 2,214 female students who participated, 21.4 percent were positive about having plastic surgery if it were to help them land a job.However, only 6.8 percent of male students felt the same way.Despite the willingness to go under the knife, more than half the students were financially dependent on their parents for tuition. Only 3.5 percent said they pay their own tuition.

First-date kissing no taboo in Korea

/ YonhapThirty percent of women in Seoul are willing to kiss on a first date, a recent survey revealed, compared to five percent in Shanghai and 15 percent in Tokyo.Advertising agency Cheil Worldwide surveyed a total of 300 women in the three cities about their dating preferences.Among women who were willing to kiss on a first date, 14 percent said they would accept a “short” kiss.Meanwhile, 12 percent of participants in Seoul were willing to sleep with a partner on a first date, compared to one percent in Shanghai and nine percent in Tokyo.
