Sparkling Girls are performing their remake of Beyonce's "Crazy in Love" in K-pop Star 4 on Sunday. / YouTube screen captureFour underdog contestants on TV singing talent show “K-pop Star 4” defied expectations with a brilliant, collaborative performance on Sunday to advance to the next round.“Sparkling Girls,” sarcastically dubbed “the inferior four” for failing to grab the judges’ attention in past efforts, sang Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love.”Starting off sitting cross-legged on chairs, the girls mixed their vocals with wonderfully choreographed moves.Judges Park Jin-young from JYP Entertainment and Yang Hyun-seok from YG Entertainment were obviously impressed.“These girls were the ones that no other contestants wanted to collaborate with,” said Park in his review. “And they delivered the perfect musical number.”The girls cried as the judges spoke.Sparkling Girls advanced along with their competitor, Jijon, a rare decision in this elimination round.

'Tough guy' actor has heart of gold

Actor Kim Bo-sung / YonhapActor Kim Bo-sung is known for playing “tough guy” characters, but it appears his heart is anything but tough.Kim this week added to his reputation for being a giving person, donating 20 million won ($18,300) to help elderly people living alone, Community Chest of Korea said Tuesday.“I wanted to be of help to the elderly who live alone,” he said.“Celebrating the New Year, I decided to make the donation to help promote a sharing culture across the nation. I believe many people sharing can make a better tomorrow and an age of faith.”In July 2014, Kim donated 20 million won for the visually disabled and children struggling with poverty.Kim has been an honorary ambassador for the charity since 2005.Last September, he became a member of the group’s “honor society,” which is limited only to those who donate more than 100 million won over five years.

Taekwondo veteran takes to MMA cage

Mixed martial arts fighter Hong Young-ki, also known as "Grandpa" fighter / Courtesy of FacebookA former taekwondo competitor is raising eyebrows by launching a career in mixed martial arts at the ripe age of 31.   In 2006, Hong Young-ki was a promising prospect for the national taekwondo team, but chose to sign a professional deal instead. However, his plan was foiled when the agency that signed him backed out.  Hong is back, with a dream to use taekwondo to become a top international MMA fighter.  In his first match, promoted by Road FC in November, Hong knocked out Baek Seung-min, who is also known as the “Korean zombie,” in under 21 seconds. Due to his age, which is advanced by professional fighting standards, some of Hong’s colleagues have dubbed him “Grandpa.”
