/ Korea Times fileBy Rachel LeeThe British accent is the most attractive in the world, according to a poll of 11,000 people in 24 cities around the world.Britain led the way with 25.6 percent, ahead of American, Irish and Australian accents, The Time Out Global Dating Survey found. French, once considered the language of love, was relegated to fifth place. But Paris was still considered the most romantic city, or the one with the best dating scene, followed by Melbourne, Kuala Lumpur, Beijing and Chicago. London ranked sixth.

Wheesung set for “I am a Singer”

R&B singer Wheesung / Korea Times fileR&B singer Wheesung will be in the third season of MBC reality show “I Am a Singer.”Program officials said the singer-songwriter would compete with six other singers.The audience determines the ranking of the seven singers for two weeks. The singer receiving the lowest score is dropped and replaced. The first person to be dropped will be revealed this week.Seven singers ­ Park Jung-hyun, Yangpa, Ha Dong-kyun, So Chan-whee, Hyorin from K-pop girl group SISTAR, vocal group Sweet Sorrow and MC the Max front man Lee Soo ­ were supposed to compete for the first round of the season. But Lee was pulled due to a prostitution scandal in 2009.Six singers have competed for the past two weeks. Wheesung will appear from this week’s episode, which airs on Friday. Modern rock band Monni will also compete from this week. Wheesung and Monni replace Lee and the singer dropped from the program from this week.Wheesung debuted in 1999 and has gained nationwide popularity. On the list of 40 popular places, the Eiffel Tower was referenced the most with 10,700 posts, followed by Disney World in Orlando, Florida and the Burj Khalifa in Dubai with 9,870 and 8,860 posts, respectively. London’s Big Ben finished fourth with 8,780 posts, ahead of the Empire State Building in New York, Sagrada Familia cathedral in Madrid and Disneyland Paris.The Colosseum in Rome, Rockfeller Center in New York and London Bridge filled out the rest of the top 10.No attractions in Korea were included on the list.

Korean women worry about thin eyebrows

Unfortunately, Korean women aren’t confident about their brows.According to a survey by Maybelline New York, some 42 percent of respondents felt concern about thin, straggly brows. Koreans turn to cheap gift sets due to economic downturn

/ YonhapKoreans are taking a frugal approach to this Lunar New Year (Seollal) season due to the continuing economic downturn. According to the country’s retailers, average sales are down by around 3 to 5 percent this month from the same period last year, but those for low-priced gift sets have increased.The most popular gift boxes contain spam, fruit and beauty products such as shampoo and cosmetics. Sales of pre-ordered gift sets in the price range of 10,000 ($9.1) and 30,000 won ($27.5) were up 32.4 percent this month between Dec. 29 and Jan. 4 on a year-on-year basis, said Home plus, the Korean chain of British retail giant Tesco. The price of about half of the retailer’s gift sets was less than 30,000 won this month. The average amount of holiday spending has decreased, said industry insiders.According to a survey by online trading site Auction, the amount that people spent went down by 40,000 won ($36.7) last month, on a year-on-year basis. The survey was conducted on 1,237 consumers.
