Black Hawk down as 'supercopter' hovers
/Screen capture from TwitterA high-tech rotorcraft machine dubbed the “supercopter” will soon replace the long-serving Black Hawk helicopter in the U.S. Army.As part of the Army’s Future Vertical Lift (FVL) program, two teams - Sikorsky & Boeing and Bell - are competing to secure the contract for the Black Hawk’s replacement, building a high-speed vertical-lift craft.Both are expected to start testing their rotorcraft in 2017.The designs are quite different.The Sikorsky-Boeing prototype, the SB-1 Defiant, is a compound helicopter design with co-axial rotors and a pusher-propeller.SB-1 Defiant /Screen capture from Twitter Bell’s prototype, the V-280 Valor, is an advanced tilt-rotor design based on technology similar to the Bell-Boeing V-22 Osprey.V-280 Valor /Screen capture from TwitterMeanwhile, two other teams, Karem Aircraft and AVX Aircraft, were not selected for the contract, but the U.S. Army is keeping an eye on their technologies.
