Authorities seek owner of gold bars found at Incheon airport

Authorities at Incheon International Airport said Thursday they were continuing to look for the owner of five gold bars worth 20 million won and 20 million won in cash found at the airport.The airport security office said the gold bars and cash were found Oct. 3 in two bags abandoned at a restaurant in the airport’s terminal for departing passengers. The police also found Vietnamese currency.The authorities said the cash and gold bars were unregistered with the customs office, indicating that they were meant to be smuggled out of Korea. Anyone traveling abroad with cash or objects worth more than $10,000 is required to report them to the office.The incident also raised an alarm for airport security which failed to detect the gold bars during passenger screening.

Samsung heir denies allegations at appeal hearing

164 South Koreans killed overseas in 2012-2016

A total of 164 South Koreans were killed while overseas from 2012-2016, foreign ministry data showed Thursday.The most Koreans were slain in the Philippines with 48, followed by the United States with 21, China with 13 and Japan with 10, according to the ministry data submitted to Rep. Hong Chul-ho of the minor opposition Bareun Party.Last year alone, nine South Koreans were killed in the Philippines, nearly half of the total number of Koreans murdered overseas, 19.A "Korean desk" was established in the Philippines police agency to deal exclusively with crimes against Koreans. A South Korean police officer is dispatched to the desk. A Korean desk is set up in Vietnam's police agency, but no Korean officer is deployed there.Hong called for efforts to set up Korean desks in more countries.The ministry data also showed that 203 Koreans suffered sexual harassment and assaults during the same period: 23 people in 2012, 41 in 2013, 29 in 2014, 53 in 2015 and 57 in 2016.China was the place with the most sexual crimes against Koreans with 45 victims, followed by 33 in Europe, 17 in the U.S.,

최근 5년간 해외에서 살해된 한국인(관광객·재외국민)이 164명에 달하는 것으로 나타났다. 12일 국회 행정안전위원회 홍철호 의원(바른정당)이 외교부에서 제출 받은 자료에 따르면 2012∼2016년 해외에서 살해된 한국인 총 164명으로 집계됐다.    국가별로는 필리핀에서 피살된 인원이 48명으로 가장 많았다. 미국(21명), 중남미(19명), 중국(13명), 일본(10명) 등이 뒤를 이었다. 특히 지난해 필리핀에서 살해된 한국인은 총 9명으로 전체 피해자(19명)의 47.4%를 차지했다.    홍 의원은 "한국인 대상 범죄를 전담 수사하는 코리안 데스크(Korean desk)가 설치된 곳은 필리핀과 베트남이 전부이고 한국 경찰관이 해당 코리안 데스크에 파견된 곳은 필리핀뿐"이라며 "경찰청은 해외 주요 국가에 코리안 데스크가 설치되도록 노력해야 한다"고 말했다고 연합뉴스는 전했다.    같은 기간 해외에서 성추행 등 성폭력을 당한 한국인은 203명으로 파악됐다.    피해 인원은 2012년 23명, 2013년 41명, 2014년 29명, 2015년 53명, 2016년 57명으로 매년 증가세를 보였다.    성폭력 피해 발생 국가별로는 중국이 45명으로 가장 많았고, 다음은 유럽권(33명), 미국(17명), 캐나다(7명), 필리핀·중남미·아프리카 및 중동권(각 6명), 일본(5명) 순이었다.

'Hungry' homeless man arrested for robbing retailers

The money is estimated at 1.5 million won ($1,320), according to police.Police started tracking him down in April after learning about his “habitual” stealing. But he evaded them as he travelled across the country, leaving no clues -- such as financial transactions -- that detectives could use to trace him.He emerged on police radar in early September when police came across surveillance camera footage showing his location. He was then caught at a bar in Busan.He reportedly told police his crime motive was “hunger.”
