Prosecutor questioned in sexual harassment probe

By Lee Kyung-min A special investigation team has questioned a prosecutor who raised a sexual harassment allegation that sparked a flood of #MeToo-style claims in Korea over the past week. The team, under the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office, questioned Seo Ji-hyun, Sunday, who claimed then a senior prosecutor Ahn Tae-geun groped her at a funeral eight years ago.The questioning came amid full-blown #MeToo-style campaigns among women who share similar experiences on social networking websites. Hundreds of internet users supported the online campaign launched by female cabin crew at Asiana Airlines seeking to file a complaint with the Ministry of Employment and Labor against Chairman Park Sam-koo, for organizing a monthly event where they were forced to give him a hug or a shoulder rub. Woman jailed for killing premature baby

By Kang Aa-young, Park Si-sooA woman has been sentenced to 10 months in prison for killing her premature baby, an appellate court in Gwangju said Sunday.The court upheld a lower court's guilty verdict, but reduced the sentence from one year to 10 months, after taking into account her “deep remorse” and that she had no criminal history.According to court documents, the woman, 39, delivered a premature baby at home in August 2016 when she was in the 28th week of pregnancy. Instead of going to a hospital, she wrapped the baby in a blanket and abandoned the child in a closet. The woman’s sister found the dead baby a day later and told police.The court said the accused woman did not go to hospital despite clear signs of premature delivery. Even after the baby was born, she had done nothing to ensure its survival, it added.

Samsung heir to face 2nd verdict over bribery on Monday

An appellate court is set to hand down its verdict Monday on Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong, who was found guilty by a lower court of offering kickbacks to former President Park Geun-hye, and her friend, in a scandal that led to Park's ouster last year.The scion of South Korea's biggest conglomerate was sentenced to five years in prison on Aug. 25 for giving 8.8 billion won ($8.2 million) to Park and her confidante, Choi Soon-sil, in return for government backing for the merger of two key Samsung units, a process that was deemed vital for his leadership succession. Lee and the prosecution both appealed the ruling.Four former Samsung executives charged alongside Lee will hear their verdicts in the same courtroom. According to the National Fire Agency, 3,852 incidents occurred in January alone this year, making the daily average 124. These fires took 45 lives. On Jan. 26, flames engulfed a five-story Sejong Hospital building in Miryang, South Gyeongsang Province, killing 36 patients, one doctor and two nurses and injuring almost 150. By Park Si-soo An ambulance company operator and eight drivers are accused of profiting from the transportation of singers who were running late, police said Thursday.They are suspected of having carried -- with sirens and lights on -- two unidentified trot singers to concert venues and airports in Ulsan and surrounding areas dozens of times between June 2015 and November 2017 It is illegal for ambulance drivers to turn on emergency alarms and transport healthy people. They are also suspected of driving the ambulances beyond the designated business area of Ulsan without permission. The singers told police they had used the ambulances to get to events on time, allegedly not knowing it is illegal. “We will continue to crack down on illegal use of ambulances,” an Ulsan police officer said.

On Monday, Seo Ji-hyun, a public prosecutor at the Tongyeong branch of the Changwon District Prosecutors’ Office in southern Korea, claimed she was groped by Ahn Tae-geun, a former senior prosecutor, at a funeral in 2010. The SPO appointed Cho Hee-jin, a seasoned female prosecutor, to lead the internal investigation team which consists of many other female prosecutors. The prosecution’s office said the team will interview the Seo and the alleged offender Ahn. Although Ahn is no longer a public prosecutor, the prosecution said he will have to comply with the interview request.The team will also look into other sexual offense allegations and ask victims to come forward and speak to them. By Park Si-soo Chung Seung-myeon / YonhapA senior prosecutor was found unconscious in a toxic smoke-filled room on Tuesday in an apparent attempt to kill himself, police said Tuesday. Chung Seung-myeon is being treated at a hospital in Gimcheon, North Gyeongsang Province. His condition is not life-threatening, Yonhap reported, citing hospital staff. The reason for his suicide attempt is unknown. Chung, head of the prosecution’s branch office in Gimcheon, was found on the floor of his residence about 9:30 a.m. His secretary told police he visited the residence because Chung didn’t come to the office on time and he didn’t receive a phone call. When found, Chung’s room was filled with choking smoke from a burned charcoal briquette on the floor, police said. Branch officials told police that Chung “drank a lot” last night. Chung was to have a farewell ceremony on Feb. 2 before moving to a newly assigned position in Daegu.

She accused an ex-senior prosecutor, who had been dispatched to the Ministry of Justice, of groping her body at a funeral in 2010.She also claims that the then chief of the ministry's criminal affairs bureau tried to cover it up and later she was transferred to an unwanted post in the regional office in 2015.
