The labor ministry confirmed the cover-up and launched a special investigation. According to the ministry and police, the accident happened on Aug. 6 at CJ Logistics' distribution center in Daejeon. The part-timer, 23, received an electric shock while monitoring products moving on a conveyer belt. YonhapBy Jung Hae-myoung Police will unmask karaoke bar owner Byun Gyeong-suk, 34, who allegedly killed a man and mutilated his body, Gyeonggi Nambu Police said on Thursday.Seven members of a review board unanimously agreed to disclose his identity due to the severity of his alleged crime. Byun, 34, would be the second case where identity was revealed, after Kim Soo-chul, a sex offender who abducted and assaulted a primary school student.Byun confessed that he stabbed the man, 51, to death and disposed of the body in Seoul Grand Park because he threatened to report Byun over an illegal hostess service.

His body was found “partially decomposed” in a flower bed near the College of Pharmacy at 3 p.m. Thursday, according to Dongjak Police Station.The man was last seen at a dormitory on Aug. 15. His family reported him missing on Aug. 17. Police say he died after falling from the building. But they do not know if he jumped to his death. An investigation is under way. “The investigation is focusing on whether he was murdered or not,” police said.

Appeals court ups jail term for ex-leader Park to 25 years in corruption trial

A Seoul appellate court on Friday increased the sentence for former President Park Geun-hye by one year to 25 years in a massive corruption case that led to her removal from office. The Seoul High Court also increased her fine by 2 billion won ($1.78 million) to 20 billion won. The 66-year-old former president was sentenced to 24 years in prison and an 18 billion-won fine by a lower court on April 6 in a ruling that the prosecution appealed. She was charged for conspiring with her longtime confidante, Choi Soon-sil, into forcing big conglomerates, including Samsung, to donate 77.4 billion won to two foundations under Choi's control. The scandal led to her removal from office by the Constitutional Court in March last year. In the appellant trial, the prosecution maintained its demand for a 30-year jail term and an 118.5 billion-won fine for Park on July 20. As for Choi, the court maintained the lower court's 20-year sentence and raised the fine by 2 billion won to 20 billion won. By Kim Hyun-bin A local court issued an arrest warrant Thursday for a murder suspect who killed and dismembered a middle-aged man.“I plead guilty to all charges,” the suspect, identified by his family name Byun, 34, told reporters when he was taken to the court for the warrant review. “I am sorry for the victim and his family.” Issuing the warrant, the court said the suspect was a flight risk. Police caught Byun in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province, Tuesday, and apprehended him on suspicion of murder and desecrating a body, two days after dismembered body parts were found near Seoul Grand Park in Gwacheon in the same province.The suspect, a karaoke bar operator, confessed to police he killed the victim at around 1:15 a.m. on Aug. 10 out of rage after the man threatened to turn him over to the police for providing an illegal hostess service. A man has allegedly beaten his girlfriend but lied about it before CCTV footage showed him pummeling her. YonhapBy Jung Hae-myoungA man, 21, was arrested for allegedly beating his girlfriend to death, Cheongju Police said Wednesday. The two had a fight in the middle of a Cheongju street at 5:30 a.m. Monday. He punched her several times and knocked her out, police said. She was taken to hospital, but died two days later. The boyfriend claimed he pushed her by mistake and she hit her head on the ground when she fell. But a surveillance camera showed him punching her several times. Police have requested an autopsy from the National Forensic Service.
