By John Redmond Yi So-yeon, the first Korean and second Asian woman to fly in space, will host a rooftop barbecue to meet with the English speaking community at Roofers in Itaewon on May 1. As part of worldwide celebration of cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin’s first flight into space on April 12, 1961, Yi will celebrate her and Korea’s milestone under the theme “Yuri’s night with Yi So-yeon.” Kicking off at midday, the Korean scientist and Ph.D. graduate of Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) will talk about her travels in English. Big building, bright lights

Seoul Square Media Canvas displays various artworks By Agnes Yu A blanket of darkness never completely covers a whirling city center at night and in unexpected ways, an array of bright lights can be a pleasing sight. Transforming the facade of the former Daewoo building with 42,000 LEDs, the Seoul Square Media Canvas decorates the architecture to be appreciated anew. Situated across from Seoul Station, it inspires commuters, travelers, locals, ex-pats, and everyone in between to reflect on life in the digital age. The 23-storey building’s exterior of flickering lamps boasts itself as among the largest in the world, measuring 99 x 78 meters. It first lit up in November 2009 and since then a diverse range of media artworks have been displayed by highly respected international artists such as British media artist, Julian Opie. On an ongoing basis, from 6 p. m. to 11 p.m. in winter and from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. in summer, not only Opie’s work, “Crowd,” but six other LED artworks also have a regularly viewing schedule. The others include “Mimesis Scape” by Yang Man-kee, “Sungra

KAFS welcomes Australian war vets

By John Redmond Members of the Korean Australian Friendship Society (KAFS) played host to Australian Korean War veterans during their visit to Korea as part of a tour commemorating the outbreak of the Korean War (1950-1953). The group, including students from schools in the Incheon area, welcomed the soldiers and family members at Incheon International Airport on Wednesday evening as a show of support for many who had not returned to the peninsula since serving during the conflict. Among the soldiers were those who were stationed in Japan at the outbreak of the war. “I was 19-years-old when I arrived in Incheon in 1952. We flew in from Japan. I haven’t been back since,” said veteran Graham Hill. “There was nothing here. The whole place was flattened. Even the roads were gone.” The groups exchanged flags and banners with children receiving toy koalas. The KAFS has been active for some 30 years as a program that involves the exchange of ideas and skills between Korea and Australia. These include job training, educational programs and trade opportunities. As part
