RocKorea looks to put indie rock, Midan City on map

By Kim Young-jin The RocKorea Midan City Concert, the first large-scale outdoor rock festival to be organized by a foreign resident, is shaping up to be a milestone for indie rock here, its organizers said. Opening on June 4 and raging until the next morning, the 18-hour festival is also the first event to be staged at Midan City, a leisure and tourism-oriented town in development on Yeongjong Island near Incheon International Airport. Haeundae to host international surfing competition June 24-26

By John Redmond Haeundae Beach in Busan will host the 3rd Annual Mayor’s Cup International Surfing Competition on June 24. As a warm up for the summer season, more than 200 surfers from all over Korea and representatives from the international surfing community will be taking over Haeundae Beach for three days. The Busan Mayor’s Cup International surfing competition originated three years ago and is a huge fixture on the surfing calendar as it actively encourages surfers and non-surfers to take part in an international event that gets everyone out into the water For a small entry free, participants will get lunch Saturday and Sunday, fun games, a goodie bag and T-shirt. There will be music, sponsored booths, photo shoots, learn2surf lessons with the top surfers from Thailand sponsored by Ocean and Earth and weekend-long board rentals and surf clinics sponsored by Songjeong Surf club. Cheongpyeong Riverside Beer Festival due Saturday

By John Redmond Ka-brew, a local brewing company, and Penial Family Hotel will present Cheongpyeong Riverside Beer and Mexican Grill Festival on May 28 from noon to 10 p.m. With a capacity to hold more than 3,000 people, the festival will feature live music from six bands and one DJ. The bands listed are Magna Fall, who will play at 2 p.m.; Seoul City Suicides at 3: 10 p.m.; Vidulgi OoyoO at 4: 20 p.m.; Angry Bear at 5: 30 p.m.; Used Cassettes at 6: 40 p.m.; and No Respect for Beauty at 7: 50 p.m. A DJ will lead the party from 8: 30 p.m. The beers on tap include Pilsner, Dark Ale, Weizen, Golden Ale and Kolsch.
