Greenpeace activist fights to save tuna

By Kim Young-jin Apple Chow, like many in her native Hong Kong and around the world, used to enjoy tuna without a second thought. After all, it was everywhere from store shelves and cheap sandwich joints to posh restaurants. That quickly changed when the biology major began working for international environmental group Greenpeace and, in 2009, its campaign to fight the rapid decline of the tuna population caused by overfishing. “Before I worked on this campaign, I was like most people ― I didn’t know there was a problem,” the 32-year-old activist said in a recent interview. “But tuna are in crisis.” Now the senior ocean campaigner for the recently-opened Greenpeace Seoul office, Chow is urging Korea to help create a sustainable environment for tuna in the Pacific Ocean, where it fishes heavily. “If we don’t protect them and support international conservative measures they’ll be gone in a few years,” she said. “My goal is to urge the government and industry here to support sustainable development.” One of the world’s favorite fish, many tuna species are endangere

Expat theater company to stage Aussie play ’Cosi’

By John Redmond Expat theater group, Probationary Theatre Company, will stage Australian written play “Cosi” from Sept. 16 to 30 at the White Box Theatre in Hyochang Park. Set in an Australian mental institution in Melbourne in 1971, the show takes a unique insight into the trials of Lewis, a young, first time director who is hired to direct a play as part of a therapeutic program to bring patients “out of their shells.” Unfortunately for Lewis, one of his cast members, Roy, has decided on Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte, not just an opera, but a three hour long Italian one. Of course, none of the few volunteers can speak Italian, much less sing ― indeed, some can barely speak. To make matters worse, the cast include a pyromaniac, a junkie, a knife wielding romantic, a confused realist, a Lithium-addict pianist who hates Mozart, a manic depressive and a stuttering ex-lawyer who refuses to take part in the production. This light hearted, award winning play within a play features an international cast of actors and promises to be a great night out. Please note this play contains
