Cold noodles, summer dishes tainted with E. coli up to 50 times safety limit

Seoul city authorities have uncovered serious hygiene violations at local eateries, with some summer dishes containing E. coli at up to 50 times the legal limit, Yonhap News Agency reported. The Seoul Metropolitan Government said on Monday that it inspected 1,985 restaurants between June and July that serve popular seasonal foods such as naengmyeon (cold noodles), kongguksu (cold noodles in soy milk) and patbingsu (shaved ice with sweet red beans), along with foods like gimbap (rice rolls), toast stands and samgyetang (stuffed chicken soup) specialty restaurants. The checks also covered eateries inside accommodations like hotels, and those near campsites and event venues. Inspectors reviewed kitchen hygiene, storage temperatures, expiration date compliance, product labeling and staff sanitation practices. The city found 22 businesses in violation, including 15 which led to fines and facility improvement orders, and one license revocation under the Food Sanitation Act. Pork and rice soup tops Busan food ranking among Taiwanese visitors

Pork and rice soup, or dwaeji-gukbap, topped the list of favorite Busan dishes among Taiwanese tourists, the largest group of foreign visitors to the southern port city, the Busan Tourism Organization said Wednesday. The findings come from a survey of 15,796 Taiwanese visitors conducted by the Busan Tourism Organization (BTO), who were asked to name their favorite local foods in the city. In the multiple-response survey, 66.9 percent chose dwaeji-gukbap, making it the top pick. Busan fish cake followed at 37.4 percent, trailed by ssiat-hotteok (seed-stuffed sweet pancake) and grilled eel. A staple in Gyeongsang Province, dwaeji-gukbap spread across the region after the Korean War and remains especially popular in Busan as a symbol of local comfort food. Typically priced between 7,000 and 10,000 won ($5 to $7), it’s known for its hearty pork bone broth with sliced boiled pork and rice served in one bowl. From January to April this year, Busan welcomed more than 1.06 million foreign tourists, up 24 percent from the same period last year. Taiwanese travelers made up the largest share at

Love Korean gimbap? Try this keto version with protein noodles

Click here for more articles by Kormedi.com. Singer and actor Uhm Jung-hwa has revealed a gimbap (Korean rice roll) recipe that she says can aid in weight management. In a recent video on her YouTube channel, chef Lim Hee-won joined Uhm to make "Caprese keto gimbap." “When I was strictly following the keto diet, I really craved gimbap,” Uhm said. “For me, gimbap is soul food.” The ketogenic or "keto" diet minimizes carbohydrate intake while increasing fat consumption, prompting the body to use ketone bodies — produced during fat breakdown — as its primary energy source. Unlike traditional gimbap, Uhm’s Caprese keto gimbap replaces rice with protein noodles and adds arugula, tomatoes, basil, avocado and cucumber. The dipping sauce combines olive oil and balsamic vinegar. The “Caprese” name comes from the Italian salad made with tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and basil. Protein noodles offer satiety and better blood sugar control The protein noodles used in place of rice are a carbohydrate alternative made primarily from protein. They are less likely to cause blood sugar spikes

Foreign tourists can ride Jeju buses with overseas Visa cards

Foreign visitors to Jeju Island can now ride buses without buying a separate ticket or transit card, simply by using a Visa card issued in their home countries. According to Visa, Thursday, the transit system has been implemented on all Jeju buses starting this month. This project marks the first application of such a system to public transportation in Korea. It was launched as part of an agreement signed in March between Visa and Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, with the goal of advancing the island's payment infrastructure. Through this initiative, Jeju aims to enhance convenience for foreign tourists and take the lead in developing new business models built around the innovative payment system. The open-loop transit payment system allows passengers to tap and pay fares using credit, debit or prepaid cards based on the EMV global payment standard. Customers can also use various devices, including smartphones and smartwatches. The system was first introduced in London in 2012 and has since been adopted in major cities such as New York, Hong Kong and Singapore. In 2024 alone, Visa p

Why do so many Koreans stick to iced Americano all year round?

A survey has found that six out of 10 iced coffee drinkers in their 20s and 30s enjoy the beverage year-round, with iced Americanos topping the list of favorites. The findings confirm the dominance of the so-called “Eoljuk-a” — a Korean phrase meaning “I’d rather freeze to death than skip my iced Americano.” Coffee brand Nespresso and the research arm of college lifestyle media outlet College Tomorrow 20s Lab conducted a survey of 300 men and women aged 25 to 34 who drink iced coffee at least three times a week. According to the results, 58.7 percent said they enjoy iced coffee “regardless of the season,” showing that iced coffee has established itself as a year-round beverage among the demographic. When asked when they usually reach for iced coffee, the most common response was “in the morning to wake up” (18 percent), followed by “before starting work or study” (14.0 percent) and “when concentration is needed” (13.7 percent). Preferences differed by age group: people in their 20s prioritized reasonable prices (70.2 percent) and dessert pairings (20.2 percen

Will Hangang Bus become must-do activity for tourists in Seoul?

On a warm Tuesday morning, the Yeouido pier hummed with joyful excitement, as families, older couples and foreign visitors gathered for one of the final trial runs of Seoul’s Hangang Bus. At Yeouido Dock, just a three-minute walk from Exit 2 of Yeouinaru Station, staff in bright pink jumpsuits greeted arrivals as they passed through subway-style turnstiles. “Welcome to Hangang Bus,” they said, ushering passengers onto the city’s first-ever waterborne public transportation service. The vessel used for Tuesday’s trial, Hangang Bus 101, was a single-deck, 150-ton boat built low to slip under the Han River's bridges. The boat featured 199 seats facing panoramic windows that frame the skyline and riverside parklands, each equipped with fold-out seat tables and life jackets. Passengers, many with smartphones and cameras in hand, chatted and waved to others on the riverbank as the boat quietly pushed off toward Ttukseom, 18 kilometers away. “Congratulations on being chosen from hundreds to join today’s trial!” a crew member announced over the speakers as the engines hummed quiet

‘My Love from the Star’ lead Jun Ji-hyun’s noodle recipe that won’t ruin your diet

Click here for more articles by Kormedi.com. A noodle recipe said to be enjoyed by actress Jun Ji-hyun is drawing attention online. While noodles are often seen as a food that can lead to weight gain, this dish boosts health and beauty benefits by pairing them with tomatoes and perilla oil as the main ingredients. Actress Choi Hwa-jung, 65, recently shared the recipe for her cold tomato noodles on her YouTube channel. “I directly asked Jun Ji-hyun, who lives in the same apartment building," she said. The recipe is simple: Freeze tomatoes before cutting them into pieces, and mix with perilla oil, tsuyu sauce, white balsamic vinegar and water to make the broth. Add precooked thin wheat noodles, then finish with perilla leaves — though Choi substituted basil instead. Tomatoes are rich in nutrients. According to the Rural Development Administration’s National Standard Food Composition Table, 100 grams of ripe tomatoes contain 5.5-8 milligrams of lycopene, 2.6 grams of dietary fiber, 561 milligrams of amino acids, 32 micrograms of vitamin A, 380 micrograms of beta-carotene, 13 micrograms

‘See you on Aug. 15, 2025’ — 10-year-old KBS docuseries moment stirs renewed interest

KBS2 program “Documentary Three Days,” which ended in 2022, is unexpectedly back in the spotlight. A segment from an episode that aired in August 2015 has captured the public’s imagination in 2025, thanks to a simple promise made between two students and a cameraman. The episode, titled “Youth on the Road — 72 Hours of Naeilro Train Travel,” followed young people in their 20s traveling by train across Korea, from solo journeys to trips with friends or partners. It explored not only the fun of travel but also the struggles of Korean youth. In one scene, after filming two students in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province, the cameraman asked how they might look back on the trip in the future. One student replied with a smile, “It would be nice to follow the exact same route in 10 years. It would leave a lot of memories.” The other added, “Film a documentary again in 10 years.” When the cameraman wondered aloud if he would still be working, the student suggested, “Let’s meet here on Aug. 15, 2025,” sealing a promise among the three.
