Ahead of the annual celebration of the Goryeo Dynasty’s remarkable cultural heritage, Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) CEO Lee Charm and other ``Korea tourism supporters’’ descended upon this rural town to help it promote the upcoming festival and itself as a tourist attraction. The tourism supporters program is an initiation by KTO, designed to boost the number of visitors to local communities. Participants include KTO CEO Lee, foreign envoys, city officials, travel agency heads, scholars and students. At the center of the celadon festival is the Gangjin Celadon Museum, which was established in 1997 for the preservation, research and exhibition of Goryeo celadon ware and the promotion of the people’s understanding of the historical importance and value of the celadon kiln in Gangjin. Toeing the in-between: An excursion into Seochon

By Ines Min Staff reporter The area directly west of Gyeongbok Palace ― also known as ``Seochon’’ ― is most noted for its traditional dining hotspots coupled with its long history of cultural landmarks. Efforts to preserve the area have been launched in past years, including the government’s most recent plan to protect 600 of the area’s ``hanok’’ (traditional Korean houses). But even so, branches of gentrification and redevelopment are tangled throughout. Seochon, a place often described by its local residents to be simply neighborhood upon neighborhood tightly packed together, has found a way to combine alternating enclaves of modern design with picturesque mom-and-pop stores. The areas in between the neighborhoods have become new centers for creativity, and one such oddly idyllic street, separating Tongui-dong and Changseong-dong, is the perfect place for a day out. Foreign guidebooks put focus on Seoul

By Kwon Mee-yoo Staff reporter More tour guidebooks are turning their eyes to Seoul, giving tourists more resources to enjoy the city once they have chosen Seoul as their travel destination. Previously, there were only three guidebooks specializing in the city of Seoul ― the famous "Lonely Planet Seoul" and "Wallpaper City Guide Seoul" and 'Seoul' by Robert Kohler. In May, Canadian guidebook "Book of Everything" released its Seoul edition. The series, famous for covering 14 Canadian tourist attractions, chose Seoul as the first international destination. The "Seoul Book of Everything" introduces Seoul's main tourist sites including old palaces, hanok (traditional Korean houses), night markets, Seoul N Tower and much more. It also lists the five "must do" things in Korea, such as the foods to eat, the phrases to know and the television dramas to watch. In China, a travel book about Seoul titled "Traveling Seoul with Hallyu (Korean Wave) Dramas" was published in February. As the title indicates, the book gives a tour of Seoul by highlighting the filming spots of the Kor

Porridge with chicken broth (Dakjuk)

By Kim Yong-ja This dish is wonderful as a winter breakfast. If you have already prepared the chicken broth in advance, it can be made very quickly. Note that the rice will expand enormously with liquid. INGREDIENTS (serves 3-4) 4 cups CHICKEN BROTH p. 156 1 cup SWEET/GLUTINOUS RICE 1 medium CARROT, cut into small cubes 1 large POTATO o (optional), cut into small cubes 1/3 ZUCCHINI, cut into small cubes 1 SCALLION, chopped fine 1 Prepare the chicken broth in advance. Rinse the rice and soak for 30 minutes, completely covered with water ½"/1.3 cm above the rice. This reduces some cooking time. In the meantime, prepare the vegetables. 2 Bring the rice to a boil. Add some chicken broth and let it simmer and stir once in a while to revent the rice from sticking to the bottom. 3 Gradually add more chicken broth together with carrot and potato cubes. Cook until the rice is cooked and expanded but still very watery. 4 Add zucchini and chopped scallion and cover and let it sit for 5minutes. Serve in individual bowls. This is an excerpt from “Korean Cuisin

Hotel brunch becomes fashionable

By Bae Ji-sook Staff reporter Brunch used to be a very simple and casual in between meal for lounging around on the weekends or on holidays here. All you needed to do was put on a track suit and a pair of slippers with a bit of cash in your wallet. Nowadays, brunch has morphed into the most fashionable form of dining. Women get dressed up with full make up on and gather with their friends at hip and fancy "brunch restaurants" in southern Seoul. They chitchat about their everyday lives and mingle all day long. The rather flamboyant trend was encouraged by the American sitcom "Sex and the City," where four high-profile socialites met every Saturday and shared their schedules, gossip and problems in Manhattan, the heart of New York. Top class hotels in Seoul are now vying to catch up on the trend with their finest selection of dishes to satisfy the picky palettes of the next Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha (the main characters of the drama). Hip and trendy The Ritz-Carlton Seoul has recently introduced the "Brunch and the City" menu, an obvious allusion to
