At W Seoul-Walkerhill, strangers become friends

By Bae Ji-sook If you enter W Seoul-Walkerhill, smile and say hello to people you meet for the first time. Something magical may happen ㅡ they could become your friends instantly, share drinks and giggle over small matters. That’s the magic of W and the spirit of W. Instead of the serenity and discretion required and expected at other five-star hotels, W chose to be fun, bright and outgoing. “I think we are too old to constantly think about what others do and their achievements. W will be going on its own way and those who like it will come and enjoy it. So far, many people like it,” said Nick Heath, general manager of the hotel. His confidence comes from the fact that the W Seoul Walkerhill is the first W hotel in Asia and has led many other hotels not only in Seoul but in other Asian countries to adopt flamboyant but classical colors in the hotel’s interior, service and most of all, atmosphere. “Yes, a hotel is all about selling beds for overnight. But I want more. I want single travelers to grab their notebook computers, sit in the Woo Bar and enjoy free Wifi LA

Domestic travel key to boosting tour industry

By Lee Hyo-sik Korea has been promoting the tourism industry as one of its future growth engines, placing top priority on attracting foreign tourists to generate new sources of income and strengthen the competitiveness of the local sector. The nation has been largely successful in drawing foreign travelers, mostly from China, Japan and other Asian countries in recent years, on the back of the growing popularity of Korean pop culture, an improving international image and the weakening of the Korean won. They spend billions of dollars here each year not only to eat, sleep and visit tourist spots, but also to purchase cosmetics and other merchandise, providing a much-needed boost to Korea’s tourism and retail industry. However, with millions of Koreans heading overseas for leisure and spending billions of dollars each year in foreign countries, it has realized that without encouraging Koreans to travel domestically, it will be difficult for Korea to become a truly competitive and advanced tourism destination. Against this backdrop, the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) and o

BENIKEA dreams of becoming international budget hotel brand

By Bae Ji-sook Many foreigners visiting Korea may have felt puzzled that there isn’t a good online reservation system for budget hotels in English language. In fact, there is. Visit www.benikea.co.kr if you are a Korean; www.benikea.jp for Japanese; www.benikea.cn for Chinese; and www.benikea.com for English and you will be able to book rooms at 45 small- to mid-sized quality hotels nationwide. The hotels are members of BENIKEA (Best Night in Korea) founded by the Korea Tourism Organization. Still at the toddler stage two years after its launch, the organizers are aiming at developing the brand into a Korean version of Best Western, Ibis, Toyoko Inn and other world market leaders. The rooms are clean, traffic is convenient and the service is above average. Some of them are situated next to the beach, some have hot springs while others are next to airports, train stations or bus terminals. Most of all, rates are less than 100,000 won per night, except for holiday peak seasons. The team has managed to guide hotels with hidden benefits find their strength and bett

Cold Noodles with medley of toppings (Naengmyeon)

One of the most popular dishes in summer. Traditionally, you cook the beef brisket in water until tender and use the broth, and the cooked meat is sliced and served together with other toppings. Although there is a flavorful broth, this method leaves the meat without any taste. I often grill a piece steak and slice it (or a few slices of roast beef) to add as a topping instead of the boiled beef. INGREDIENTS (serves 4) 6 cups beef broth 1/4 teaspoon mustard seed oil 2 small cucumbers, sliced and cut into thin strips 1 1/2 cups kimchi, sliced thin 1/2 Asian pear, peeled, cored and sliced into thin strips 2 EGGS, soft boiled and cut 3/4 lb/340g club steak (or roast beef slices) Vegetable oil 1 garlic clove, crushed fine Salt and pepper 12 oz/338g buckwheat noodles 1. Prepare the beef broth in advance. Add mustard seed oil. 2. Prepare cucumbers, kimchi, pear and eggs. Grill the steak with vegetable oil in the frying pan. Rub with crushed garlic and add salt and pepper. Slice thin when cooled. 3. Cook the noodles in boiling wate

Hanbang for the heat and health

Tasty, healthy teas fit for drizzling summer By Han Sang-hee Outdoors the heat is sizzling hot while indoors the air conditioners are turbo charged to provide some relief. Although it would be difficult to endure the extreme heat without any cool air, this wide gap in temperature cannot be good for your body. Instead of battling the heat with cold beverages or ice cream, try something traditional to beat those scorching rays while doing no harm to your health. ``Hanbang,’’ which means ``traditional Korean medicine,’’ was, and still is, a popular method in treating illnesses while keeping both your mind and body healthy. The traditional remedies are still applied in everyday life for Koreans and now there are easier ways to benefit from and learn more about the ancient medicine. Tea in Hanbang Hanbang, like other Oriental traditional medicine, has been influenced by Chinese traditions. One of the earliest references to Korean herbs as medicine would be the founding myth regarding a bear and tiger that ate wormwood and garlic. These two ingredients are still consid

Laos: place of perfect serenity and happiness

VIENTIANE, Laos — If you haven’t been to Laos yet, you are missing two important things in your life: an opportunity to explore great nature at a very reasonable price and plenty of chances to brag about one of the least known countries in the world. Those reasons made me choose three of its major cities — Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng and Vientiane — for my summer holiday. I was able to benefit from all the nature the country has to offer for over nine days for very little money. But what was more contenting was that I found a great place to find true relaxation and peace, isolation from all the breaking news and complicated matters that tortured me in Seoul. Luang Prabang: History The northern city of Luang Prabang is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was the royal capital of the Kingdom of Laos until the communists took over the country in 1975 and relocated the capital to Vientiane. The old city center has 25 ancient temples with hundreds of monks training themselves and educating local residents with Buddhists’ teachings. The flashy
