This is the first time for Jangseogak to have its own building since its inception. King Gojong attempted to establish a royal archive to house some 100,000 volumes of books scattered around various institutions around the nation, which included the annals of the past kings and other royal house-related records under the name of the “Imperial House Book Collection” in 1908. However, as Korea was forcibly annexed by Japan one year later in 1910, the project was abandoned. Saipan -- ideal summer getaway for families

By Lee Hyo-sik About this time many think about where to go for the upcoming summer vacation. If you are single, it is relatively easy because all you need to do is pick a place to spend a week-long getaway. But if you are married with children, it is a different story as you have to satisfy everyone. Husbands may want to hone their golf skills, wives desire luxurious spa and massage treatments, while children are eager to engage in a range of outdoor activities. If that is the case, there is a perfect place that meets everyone’s needs: Saipan, a tropical paradise offering magnificent beaches, crystal clear blue waters, shopping, a wide range of ethnic food, and a multitude of recreational activities. Located in the Northern Marianas, Saipan is just four hours by airplane from Korea, with Asiana Airlines operating nine weekly flights between them. It is one of three major islands of the Marinas along with Tinian and Rota, which offer visitors unique tropical island life and hospitality. Saipan became part of the United States Commonwealth of the Northern Mari

Croatia new destination for Korean tourists

By Lee Hyo-sik The Republic of Croatia is emerging as a new European destination for Korean and other Asian visitors, offering what France and other so-called ``tourism powerhouses’’ cannot. Croatia has been pursuing sustainable tourism for years not to overdevelop its tourism infrastructure and preserve its nature, said Amelia Tomasevic, CEO of the Zagreb Tourist Board, in an interview with The Korea Times. Zagreb is the capital of Croatia, which became a sovereign state in 1991, following the collapse of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Tomasevic came to Korea to participate in the 2011 Korea International Travel Mart to promote her country among heads of local travel agencies and tourism officials. ``Many Koreans have been to most well-known European destinations. I think now is the time to turn their eyes to Croatia because it is different from other nations. We are rich in culture, history and most of all, home to a well-preserved pristine nature,’’ she said. In 2010, about 20,000 Koreans visited Croatia, Tomasevic said, adding that there will be more

Smarter ways to explore central coast

Smartphones and tablet PCs have become the hottest items in modern daily life in addition to travelling. Local visitor’s bureau offers applications to assist traveling around the colorful central coast area. “Explore Monterey” starts up with scenery of the Big Sur coastline and provides a variety of information across the county from dining and accommodation to events calendar and scenic drives. The information is either available by category or according to proximity. “Visit San Luis Obispo County” is easily recognizable with its icon that resembles a sun rising between hills. The application provides special coupons and introduces the Savor Festival in September, which will showcase an array of local winemakers and restaurants. “Santa Barbara Sip & Savor” has a food feature section, a fun read for those who want to know about local dining and wine in depth.

California's central coast has everything By Kwon Mee-yoo SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The state of California has a thousand charms. San Francisco, the city of free spirits, and Los Angeles, the glamorous city of Hollywood, are two metropolises and the central coast connects them with breathtaking scenery and culinary treats including local wineries. There are numerous ways to travel from San Francisco to Los Angeles, but one of the best ways would be the California State Route 1, more commonly known as Highway 1. The highway runs along some of the most beautiful coastlines of California and guarantees a pleasant scenic drive. The coastal highway was partially closed due to a landslide in April but is scheduled to reopen this week, providing full access for travelers to see the Big Sur coastline. Monterey Bay Delve into the beauty of this coastal region by heading south from San Francisco to Los Angeles and the first stop would be Monterey. The city cannot be missed for those who loved John Steinbeck’s famed novel “Cannery Row.” This is the place where the
