Korea's air passenger traffic reached a record high in the first quarter of the year. Korea Times fileSouth Korea's air passenger traffic reached a record high in the first quarter of the year, helped by the rising number of Chinese tourists and increasing budget airliner operations, government data showed Tuesday.The number of air passengers came to 30.5 million in the January-March period, up 6.4 percent on-year, marking a new quarterly record, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.Low-cost carriers accounted for 32 percent of the figure in the first three months of the year, a sharp rise from the 13 percent tallied in 2015. International air passenger traffic rose 7 percent on-year to reach 23 million in the first quarter, with domestic travelers rising 4.4 percent over the cited period to reach 7.5 million, according to the ministry. Passenger traffic on Chinese routes came to 4.14 million in the period, up 14 percent on-year. 'Sarangchae' walking tour to begin next week

By Kang Seung-wooA walking tour program to Cheong Wa Dae "Sarangchae" will be launched next week for foreign residents, tourists and multiracial families, the state-run tour promotion agency said, Thursday.Sarangchae is a two-story comprehensive tourist promotion center near the presidential office designed to show visitors the history of former Korean presidents and Korea's traditional culture. According to the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO), the “Road to Cheong Wa Dae Sarangchae” will begin a one-month run, being offered every Friday and Saturday, April 26 to May 25. This tour program is only open to foreigners living in or visiting Korea and multicultural families here. The participation fee is 10,000 won ($8.80) per person. Participants in the Friday course will visit Jogye Temple and Samcheong-dong, both of which are tourism hotspots in central Seoul, on their way to Sarangchae. Courtesy of Ministry of Foreign AffairsBy Jung Min-hoThe Korean government has issued the highest-level travel restriction to ban its citizens from visiting the western region of Myanmar.The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Wednesday that it issued a black warning to Koreans who are staying in or planning to travel to the northern area of Rakhine State that borders Bangladesh.It also issued a yellow warning (the third-highest alert of its four-tier travel warning system) against traveling to much of Kachin and Shan states in the north.The ministry said it made the decision following growing armed conflicts in the country.The new restrictions are expected to hamper Myanmar's effort to attract visitors from Korea. Last October, Myanmar started granting visa-free entry to Korean tourists.“We will keep a watchful eye on Myanmar's political and security situations in order to check whether further travel restrictions are necessary,” the ministry said.
