Top Financial Regulator Attends Basel Committee

Financial Supervisory Service Governor Kim Jong-chang participated in the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS), which occurred in the Switzerland city on Sunday. Top financial regulators and central bank heads from 27 member countries took part in the biannual meeting that focused on how to improve financial status and liquidity of banks in the aftermath of the global economic swoon. Kim also met with his counterparts from China and Japan to discuss how to beef up the three Asian countries' cooperation in the financial segment. 2PM Leader Jae-beom’s Past Comments Enrage Korean Fans Despite Apology

By Han Sang-hee Staff Reporter Jae-beom, leader of popular boy band 2PM, is in hot water for remarks he made on Korea belatedly became public. Jae-beom issued an apology Saturday when comments he made in 2005-2007 to an acquaintance in United States were revealed by fans. The singer wrote comments like ``Korea is gay. I hate Koreans. I wanna come back'' on his social networking Web site myspace, enraging fans who later commented that they were disappointed and some even felt betrayed by his posts. The Korean-American singer at that time was an understudy at JYP Entertainment, the current agency of the seven-member group ``I first came to Korea as a high school freshman. I didn't know much about Korea nor the language and the food was different,'' Jae-beom said in the public apology. ``The comments that I made were emotional expressions of discontent over my situation at that time … I sincerely apologize.'' Tablo, Kang Will Tie Knot in October

Hip-hop group Epik High leader Tablo and actress Kang Hye-jung will get married in October. ``Tablo is preparing for an October wedding. The couple will become father and mother next year," said an official for Tablo Saturday. "They had planned to wed next year but Kang's pregnancy caused them to advance the wedding date." Kang is reportedly in her fifth week of pregnancy. Tablo, 29, and Kang, 27, have been dating since they first met at Epik High's Christmas concert last year. Unlike other celebrity couples who usually keep their love stories secret, Tablo and Kang have talked about their relationship through various TV shows and press interviews. Tablo is a leading Korean hip-hop musician, rap artist, songwriter and lyricist. Kang made her debut as a magazine model while attending high school. Busan Mayor Wins Jurgen Palm Award

Busan Mayor Hur Nam-sik Friday received the TAFISA Jurgen Palm Award 2009 at the 21st TAFISA World Congress which is taking place in Taipei from Sept. 3 to 7. The award is in recognition of his contribution to international Sport for All and Physical Activity (SAPA) by successfully hosting the 4th Busan TAFISA World Sport for All Games in 2008. The award is named after and in tribute of Jurgen Palm, the founder of TAFISA (Trim and Fitness International Sport for all Association). "I assume that our efforts have been acknowledged to make the event an international festival for all participants, transcending nations, people and religions," Hur said. About 2,500 athletes from 101 countries, as well as 30 IOC members and 600 international sports personalities participated in the event. Jeong Lak-hyeong, deputy mayor for political affairs, received the award on behalf of the mayor. Incheon Mayor to Present Development Cases at Forum

Incheon Mayor Ahn Sang-soo will present the city's development cases and plans on its free economic zone at the 2009 Asia Pacific Cities Summit (APCS) to be held from Sept. 15 to 17 in the port city. The conference will take place on the sidelines of the 2009 Incheon Global Fair and Festival, which is being held in the nearby Songdo International City for 80 days from Aug. 7. About 150 mayors ― 120 from international cities and 30 from domestic cities ― will participate in the three-day conference under the theme of ``Creative Urban Development." According to the city, about 1,000 scholars and experts will also share their vision on creative urban policies. Mayor Ahn said the summit will be an opportunity to focus Asia-Pacific attention on the Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ), currently under construction in the adjacent Songdo, Cheongna and Yeongjong areas. Nuclear Expert Named in World’s Top 100 Scientists

A Korean nuclear power researcher has been selected as one of world's top 100 scientists by the International Biographical Center (IBC), the most acclaimed European personal information directory. Kim Hong-suk, a research fellow at the Korean Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS), was placed on IBC's 2009 Outstanding Scientists of the 21st Country list, the state-run institute said Wednesday. Earlier this year, Kim was also listed in three other IBC directories ― Top Educators 2009, 2000 Outstanding Intellectuals of the 21st Century and the 21st Century Award for Achievement. He is also included in this year's Marquis Who's Who directory edition. Moon Bloodgood Will Boost Korean Tourism

According to the KTO, Bloodgood will join the tourist agency's North American promotional events to invigorate the sector, which has been affected by the economic slowdown and fears over influenza A. The actress reportedly turned down Sony's $1-million Internet show because of the KTO project. Bloodgood was born to a Korean mother and a Dutch-Irish American father. Werber to Feature Korean Computer Geek in New Book

By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter French novelist Bernard Werber, who has a solid fan base here, said a Korean boy will be featured as a protagonist in his new book ``Cassandra's Mirror.'' Revealing his special attachment to Korean readers, Werber introduced the character named Kim Ye-bin, a computer genius, who foresees the future with Cassandra, the female protagonist. The book is to be published in France next month. ``Korea is the country that discovered and appreciated me as a writer. Korean readers were eager for my books even before I became known in France. Actress Back Home After Marriage in US

Hallyu star Lee Young-ae returned home Wednesday afternoon after shocking fans with her secret marriage to a businessman on Aug. 24 at a resort in Hawaii. She returned home alone and her agency fell short of disclosing the schedule for her stay here. ``I'm happy. Min to Head Konkuk Language Institute

By Do Je-hae Staff Reporter Konkuk University Language Institute named professor Min Byoung-chul as its new president Thursday. Min is one of the best-known TV personas to have gained fame and fortune through his English teaching skills. "My focus will be combining online and offline methods for the maximum learning effect of foreign languages," said the 59-year-old, who also runs a large nationwide network of English learning institutes. The institute specializes in English, Japanese and Chinese education. Min previously taught English at Chung-Ang University before being named to his new post. He holds a PhD. in education from the University of Northern Illinois and is the chairman of the BCM Educational Group, founded in 1984 to promote conversational English.
