JTI names new president

Steve R. DyerBy Park Si-sooTobacco company JTI Korea named Steve R. Dyer as its new general manager, the company said Wednesday. He will lead the company from Feb. 1.He previously served as general manger of JTI Singapore. Born in South Africa, he joined the company in 1997 and has since worked in various positions at the firm’s units in countries, including Tanzania, Switzerland, Russia and Hong Kong.Dyer is highly experienced in human resources management, the company said, adding he has implemented various programs designed to nurture creative and innovative employees.“I will tap into my past experiences in the Asia Pacific region and strive to grow JTI Korea as a respected company,” he was quoted as saying in an English-written press release. “The new competitive environment and challenges posed to us in 2015 will become special opportunities for JTI Korea to take a new leap forward.”

This is because of a lack of big killer content,” Song said at a meeting with reporters at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, Tuesday. It was the first meeting between local media and Song after he was appointed as the agency’s third chief last December.“To maintain growth, KOCCA will endeavor to create killer content that can get attention from around the world. Cho Kyu-bumBy Kim Jae-wonDeloitte Anjin said Tuesday that it appointed former government tax officer Cho Kyu-bum as its principal to provide more specialized tax services to its clients. Cho, 52, led the tax policy department of the OECD/Korea Policy Center, before joining the local affiliate of the global professional service company. He started his career at the Ministry of Strategy and Finance, and spent most of his career in the tax bureau of the ministry. “Principal Cho Kyu-bum has both professional and communication skills, being elected as the best boss for two years in a row at the Ministry of Strategy and Finance. We are sure that he will contribute to our company in tax advisory as well as other fields of business,” the company said in a statement. Cho studied international economics at Seoul National University, and holds a masters’ degree from the University of Birmingham in the U.K.

Nuclear expert Han Pil-soon dies at 82

Han Pil-soonBy Park Jin-haiHan Pil-soon, former president of the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI), died of heart failure Sunday, according to his family. He was 82.His memorial altar has been set up at St. Mary’s Hospital in southern Seoul. His remains will be buried at Daejeon National Cemetery on Thursday.Born in Gangnam County, South Pyeongan Province (now North Korea), in 1933, Han majored in physics at Seoul National University and obtained a master’s degree at Illinois University. He also graduated from the Republic of Korea Air Force Academy.Han returned to Korea in 1959 after completing his Ph.D. degree at the University of California at Los Angeles, and participated as a founding member of the Agency for Defense Development in 1970.During this time, Han strived to produce parachutes, bulletproof helmets, grenades and Vulcan automatic cannons with domestic technologies.Han, the “father” of Korean atomic energy, became involved with atomic energy in 1982, when he was appointed vice president of the Korean Energy Research Institute, a prede

She lost by 13,000 votes to the then strong presidential candidate Moon Jae-in of the main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy. Despite the result of the election, her devout following in the political sphere gave her the nickname of “Little Park Geun-hye.”The 30-year-old party member is scheduled to tie the knot with an office worker surnamed Kim. She was 89.She was pronounced dead at a hospital in South Jeolla Province at around 8 a.m., according to the Korean Council for the Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan.A memorial altar was set up at the hospital, and a funeral service will be held in private on Wednesday.With Hwang’s death, only 54 Korean victims of wartime sexual slavery are still alive. A total of 238 people were registered with the government as such victims.Born in 1926 in Jangseong of the province, Hwang lost her parents when young and lived with a younger brother. When she was 17, a neighbor said he would help her work at a factory in Busan.
