Face reading

By Janet Shin From your face, I may read your capability, qualifications, feelings and thoughts. Even a clever actor cannot hide those elements, because even the heaviest makeup cannot conceal them from face reading. From the past, people believed that they were born with a certain destiny, which they could not alter. Yet at the same time, they also wanted to believe that there was something they could improve by effort and the changes show. Faces alter with time. The changes reflect not only age, such as wrinkles but the way people have lived. There is a Korean saying that people must be responsible for their faces from their 40s, because the face reveals everything about their lives without reserve. I don’t deny that our lives are full of unexpected dynamics. While a lot of our life stories are told by saju, we must open our eyes and ears wide to read and hear what are told by one’s face and voice. “Eolgul,” the Korean world for face, means that the face contains our spirit as “eol” means spirit or soul. As this indicates, our face reveals our love fortunes, popularity, c

(155) Face

By Janet Shin In the Orient, people have their faces read to foresee their destiny. Face reading is based on visible facts and uses statistical methods, so it has a different theoretical background from saju or other divinations. I often tell people that the face is like our resume to show how we have lived or live, think, and behave, while it also reflects the environment and genetic factors, of course. You may expect that beauty is an important factor to determine whether one is likable or not. But people do not judge others only by beauty. First impressions are more influenced by feelings-anxiety or pleasure and thoughts whether they are negative or positive, flexible or rigid, sick or healthy and so on. Oriental face-reading originates from ancient China with an almost 3,000-year history. And it has also a historical background of Greek philosophers. Physiognomy in English consists of physis to mean nature or the principle of the change and gnomon. Gnomon is the part of a sundial that casts the shadow. But it also means, as an ancient Greek word, “indicator”, “one who

Hot stones used for healing massage

By Kelly Frances The smooth, shiny stones piled in the corner of Doi Ku's Spa may seem unremarkable, but they are actually unique healing tools, used in the therapeutic massage known in Western culture as "La Stone". Ku is the owner of Neurinamu Therapy near Hongik University in northern Seoul, popularly known as Hongdae, which offers a variety of therapeutic programs, including stone massage. "These stones are made of basalt, and they come from the Andes Mountains in Peru,” she said. "It’s a type of dense, volcanic rock, high in iron-magnesium. This makes it an excellent conduit of energy for massage." Stone massage has been in use for thousands of years in various cultures in India, China, and Hawaii. The technique typically involves placing heated, smooth basalt stones on specific points on the body. The volcanic rocks are believed to open up the energy channels of the body, also known as "Chakras" in accordance with ancient Ayurveda principles. According to Ku, the therapy is believed to have numerous medical uses, as the heated stones penetrate the muscles, allow

(154) What is your favorite color?

By Jason Shin A famous opera singer saw “The Kiss” by Gustav Klimt on a television art program. Then he said in a tranquil tone, “I love the color gold, especially brighter gold in this painting.” In the famed painting, a man and a woman stand on a flower scattered field and hold each other to lapse into a state of ecstasy inside a gold aura that radiates as if their halo. The clear ringing voice of the baritone singer and the gold image of “The Kiss” were seen in a mystical harmony on screen. Do you have any color or any mood, which mysteriously attracts you? I clearly notify every client that our attempt to change our destiny is very limited. We, as human beings, cannot alter our four pillars of destiny from birth. There is a Korean saying “Oh my ‘palja.’” “Pal” means eight and “ja” means letters. So palja literally refers to the eight letters or four pillars of destiny. This is usually told when a situation is tough and one cannot ameliorate it. By saying this, people try to take hardship as it is and let it go. How about now? People have learned that there is a lot m

Treatment for functional dyspepsia

By Lim Ju-won Dyspepsia is a common problem associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or gastritis, but may be the first symptom of peptic ulcer and occasionally cancer. Hence, unexplained newly-onset dyspepsia in people over 55 or the presence of other alarming symptoms may require further investigation such as upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Functional dyspepsia is a condition of impaired digestion that causes an upset stomach in the upper abdomen. Functional dyspepsia often has recurrent and chronic pain or discomfort. The most common symptoms of functional dyspepsia include upset stomach, discomfort or pain in the upper abdomen, bloating, and fullness quickly than expected when eating. Some people also have nausea, belching, or heartburn. To figure out the cause of your symptoms, your doctor will ask you some questions and perform a physical exam. If you are older than 55 or have serious symptoms, such as persistent vomiting, unintentional weight loss, or difficulty swallowing, you should be investigated by upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.

(153) What makes Ahn Cheol-soo different from other politicians?

By Janet Shin The more I read people’s saju from all walks of life, the more I realize that the reading must be adjusted to the current socio-cultural environment. One major difference is seen in the saju of politicians. Some are elected through the support of their party, while others are supported mainly by the voters. Usually, the power of the supporting party is crucial to win at elections but that isn’t always the case these days. I have read the saju of many people who draw public attention, from historical figures to modern icons, so that I can judge the versions of one’s life. Among them, politicians mostly showed power energy (career star), until quite recently. Some politicians who earn public support these days are showing diverse aspects. Expression and knowledge stars rather than career stars weigh more and more in popular politicians. Although there are higher possibilities of sudden falls in their popularity, more politicians with public support or an intellectual background, are inducted into the political world even though they lack a party power b
